Favorite part of yoga?
My favorite part of yoga?!?! It makes me feel strong! Strong in mind and body – no other workout can satisfy both the way yoga does. My favorite part about Tranquil Space Yoga is the community. I seriously love this place and everyone who walks in – one thing I always try and do is learn everyone’s name. I love the reaction I get from our yogis when they walk in the door and I greet them by first name and they’re shocked that I remember them! Especially the newer ones. It helps bring that sense of community here closer, and in a city like DC, finding a community like this one can be hard to come by.
Where did you grow up?
Lexington, Kentucky. I moved here after college, it’s definitely a different vibe from Lexington, but I love it!
Almost Famous. My love of music made me want to be like Penny Lane and be a “muse” when I was younger. Plus I love Kate Hudson’s hair (hint hint).
What inspires you?
The people around me. I’m extremely social, if I’m the first one home I immediately mass text my roommates asking when they will be home. I love to bounce ideas off of others, and hear what is going on in their lives. I’m definitely not afraid to talk to strangers. I can make a friend out of anyone. Even the grumpies.
For a long time it seemed to me that life was about to begin – real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time to still be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life. This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have. And treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time and remember that time waits for no one… Happiness is a journey, not a destination. – Alfred D’Souza.
I lived with my aunt and uncle for a while whenever I would intern in DC during school. My aunt passed away unexpectedly right after I graduated and shortly before I moved back in with my uncle in 2012. After spending years in their house living and visiting, I never noticed this magnet hanging in their kitchen until we came back to their house after her funeral. I took a picture of it right then and it’s been the background of my phone ever since. It fit perfectly with what was going on with my life at that time – I had just graduated college and felt completely lost. It’s definitely how I try and live my life today – life is right NOW.
Favorite yoga pose and why?
DOUBLE PIGEON. Strange, I know. I used to be a big runner, so I just looooove the feeling it gives. And I can do it pretty much anywhere without looking like a weirdo. I sit cross-legged a lot, so just a simple alteration, and you’ve got double pigeon!
EVERY HOLIDAY!!! Just kidding. Ugh, if I HAD to pick- Thanksgiving. I love food and family and friends. And being thankful
Favorite album or artist?
BAHHH This is like asking me which snowflake is the prettiest!! I grew up listening to Carol King and James Taylor, so they will always have a soft spot in my heart. If you were going to look through the few songs on my iPhone, the majority would be from my favorite DJ Kaskade (shout out Dave Kidney) – he can go from the perfect mellow music to listen to while you meditate to an insane energized pick me up.
