Yoga Anatomy & Therapeutics: Neck & Head with Megan Davis

Join Megan Davis on Saturday, December 7 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at TS Dupont.

The average head weighs 12-15 pounds and, when combined with the pull of gravity, this puts a significant amount of pressure on the muscles of the neck. These muscles are stressed further by the forward head posture that most of us have because we spend so much time sitting in front of a computer. When the muscles of the neck are stressed and weak it can contribute to jaw issues and headaches. Whether your neck stress or pain comes from stress or poor head-neck alignment, chronic tightness in the levator scapulae and the upper trapezius can lead to significant neck pain and can limit range of motion. When these muscles are tight, they also pull up on the scapula, which increases compression on the cervical vertebra, which can lead to arthritis, cause nerve pressure that makes pain radiate down the arm, and increase the likelihood of neck injuries.

In this workshop we will review basic neck and head anatomy and work to stretch and strengthen the muscles of the neck to alleviate neck pain and tension as well as to promote healthy posture habits.
