Yoga in the United States is a $7 billion industry. With more than ten million people practicing yoga, studios proliferate and products and services fill the marketplace. Does this trend toward consumerism and commercialism signal the demise in the West of the ancient and sacred practice of yoga as outlined in the Yoga Sutras? Or, is there another trend within the yoga community that, growing in strength and impact, offers us a counterbalance to better address the needs of our time?
