Join Lisa, Dave, and your fellow TS yogis on Sunday, August 18th, for a discussion of The Secret Power of Yoga by Nischala Joy Devi. The Secret Power of Yoga is a heart-centered translation of Pantajali’s Yoga Sutras.
Sutra is translated as thread or sutures. The Yoga Sutras are the threads, the foundational principles of yoga. This particular translation and interpretation is one of the first by a woman. Devi uses a “heart” and “consciousness” focus, one that embraces both thoughts and feelings as she interprets these threads. We look forward to discussing your thoughts on this translation, exploring any questions you may have, and looking at ways that we can apply the sutras in our daily lives on and off the mat.
II.46 Sthira Sukham Asanam
The natural comfort and joy of our being is expressed when the body becomes steady (asana). When describing “asana”, Sutra II.46 uses two Sanskrit words: sthira and sukha. Sthira denotes an effortlessness while coming into the pose or posture, holding it, or coming out of it. Sukha reflects the natural state of comfort and joy. As the body finds its ease, the mind and emotions align with it, reflecting the light of the Divine. It allows us the feeling of being comfortable in our own skin. The inner and outer worlds interconnect.
