Team Player of the Month: Kristen Neishi

Kristen NeishiFavorite part of yoga?

I am in love with yoga! One of my favorite parts is the first 10-15 minutes of class which has us flowing through variations of sun salutations. Slowly but surely I can feel the heat building up and moving through every part of my body. It takes me by surprise a lot of times how different I feel after just a few rounds of sun salutations, going from stiff and constricted to completely open and free.

Where did you grow up?

Definitely not in one place thanks to my dad’s job. Born in Cali (Bay Area) then moved to southern Cal when I was 3. Then we ended up in Fort Smith, AR and I became a little Asian with a southern accent from the age of 6-13. We moved back to Cali (Bay Area) for a year which is where I quickly lost the southern accent due to a fair amount of teasing and questionable remarks and then I rounded out my high school years in Carmel, Indiana. Basically, I consider home to be wherever my parents are living which is now thankfully back in Cali. Couldn’t ask for a better place to visit any time of the year!

What are your top 3 hobbies?

Cooking, hanging/cuddling with my sweet pup Frances, and yogaing.

Favorite piece of art?

I pretty much love all things Van Gogh but my favorite piece of his is the Blossoming Almond Tree. It’s the first piece of art I ever bought my freshmen year of college at this awesome poster store in Berkeley.

Favorite food?

If I had to pick one food item that I could not live without, it would hands down be eggs so I guess that should be my favorite. Cheese, wine, croissants, and kettle chips are high on the “can’t resist” list as well.

Favorite restaurant in DC/VA/MD?

Currently, my favorite restaurant is Rasika. I thought it was all hype like most restaurants in DC but I was blown away. I crave this dish called Palak Chaat. It’s this crispy spinach with sweet yogurt and chutney – simply amazing, like nothing I’ve ever tasted before.

Dream vacation or favorite vacation you’ve ever been on?

Favorite vacation has to be my trip to the Galapagos Islands. I will probably never make it back but what I saw was stunningly beautiful, fascinating, and probably like nothing I’ll see again. As for dream vacations, Croatia and a tour of Asia (Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam) are on my list.

Favorite yoga pose and why?

Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose) because I feel like I’m stretching my body in all different directions and making myself a wee bit taller in the process. And I love balancing poses.

Favorite holiday?

Christmas because it means lots of family time.
