Asana of the Month: Ustrasana (Camel Pose)

Each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

BKS Iyengar states that "people with drooped shoulders and hunched backs will benefit [from] this asana," while yogajournal.com notes that the pose can have therapeutic applications for respiratory ailments, mild backaches, fatigue, anxiety, and menstrual discomfort.

Ustrasana (Camel Pose):
Ustra = camel
Asana = pose, posture

Benefits [according to yogajournal.com]:
• Stretches the entire front of the body—the ankles, thighs, groins, abdomen, chest, and throat
• Stretches the deep hip flexors (psoas)
• Strengthens back muscles
• Improves posture
• Stimulates the organs of the abdomen and neck

Cautions/Contraindications:
• High or low blood pressure
• Migraines
• Insomnia
• Serious low back or neck injury

February Mindfulness Musings

WelcOMe to February at Tranquil Space. As we transition into the second month of this new year, let's take a mOMent to honor your efforts thus far and your ongoing tranquility journey. Did you try our 21-day challenge? Did you cut out some meat or sugar and replace it with greens and whole grains? Did you sign up to learn a new skill like dancing, sewing, or speaking Spanish? How are your resolutions unfolding? My hope is that you're feeling a sense of serenity and still basking in the fresh slate of the new year. If not, or you'd like more (and who wouldn't?), read on.

Our tranquilosophy at Tranquil Space includes a proclamation of taking yoga off the mat and into everyday life. It's wonderful to have a beautiful yoga practice, but what's the point if the rest of life feels out of sorts, messy, and like a daily struggle? As you know, there are always going to be ups and downs so I encourage you to take time to nurture yourself with mindful self care and ongoing self study (svadhyaya) to bring balance. Below are seven of my favorite tranquility tips:

1. Begin and end each day with reflection. Take time at the start of your day to get thoughts out of your head and onto paper. This mini brain dump can do wonders to relieve pent up cares and concerns. I recently asked someone how she dealt with conflict and she said she processed it through excel spreadsheets. I had to giggle - we all have our methods! Conclude your day with a wrap up on what you're proud of, what you'd like to do different next time, and anything that is weighing heavily.

2. Explore your dreams monthly. Are your daily actions moving in the direction of your dreams? If not, can you make some changes to do so? For example, is an ongoing goal to do a volunteer vacation in India? Begin by carving out time for online research, determining travel dates and tickets, and securing time off. Move daily in the direction of your dreams. Plant the seeds, water them regularly, provide adequate sunshine, then step aside to let life unfold.

3. Practice mindfulness daily. Be fully present with the person in front of you (versus checking your iPhone for the latest tweet). Consciously walk to work and feel the ground beneath you. Observe street art, birds, and people that you pass. Notice your surroundings. Eat your meal slowly and deliberately (versus standing up or on-the-go). Join Todd, Katie, and me for weekly yoga and meditation classes.

4. Listen to your body. Notice how good it feels after a meal at Cafe Green (down the street from our Dupont Circle studio) versus a quick trip through the nearby drive through. Let it rest when you can tell it's begging for down time. Give yourself a dose of our restorative or yin practices versus of an active vinyasa class when you can tell in needs some TLC. Indulge in a massage, nap, or bed day as a way to lovingly nurture it.

5. Savor a soak in the tub. This simple act of self-care is a nightly ritual during winter months. This, too, can be a practice of mindfulness. Surround yourself with candles, water with a mint sprig, and slip into a sacred bath. If you live in a full house with many beings, this may be your very special room of your own (highly encouraged a la Virginia Woolf).

6. Sip your tea slowly. As the above quote by author Alexandra Stoddard reminds us, tea can have a powerful effect on our day. Mine always starts with Tazo Zen tea and a dollop of tasty agave nectar. Many stop mid-day to indulge in an official tea time. Can you, too, start a ritual at home or the office? How about indulging after your practice with us? Savor each sip and count this toward a very special mindfulness practice.

7. Smile at strangers. With roots in Oklahoma where people are blessed with the friendly gene, I find this to be a very helpful tool in connecting with others. Maya Angelou's quote, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel" is one of the most amazing reminders to smile, listen, and smile at strangers.

Please join me in making February a month of heart opening through our asana of the month, attention to mindful self-care, and ongoing reflection. May you experience many mOMents of tranquility this month on AND off the yoga mat. You deserve it. Namaste.

Weekend Happenings at Dupont

Our first weekend Baby & Me series has arrived!



Kicking off this Saturday, February 4th from 11:30am-12:30pm
Ideal for working parents, this four (4) week series will guide you through a vinyasa practice for you while including your baby! Open to women in all stages of postpartum, Dads, relatives, and caregivers. Babies 2 weeks to 7 months are welcome.

This series will be held Saturday's February 4th, 18th, 25th, and March 3rd and is
$80 for all four sessions
(drop ins available only the day of the workshop for $25 space permitting)

Art + Yoga France Retreat

Arlington open as scheduled tonight

We're warm and ready for you at 5:30, and 7 plus the members class at 8:30. Emphasis on warm ;)

No noon class at Arlington today!

We're having a bit of a problem with our heat at the Arlington studio, so rather than practice polar yoga, we're canceling the noon class. We hope to have everything resolved before the 5:30pm class, but stay tuned to the blog, Facebook and Twitter for updates. Thanks, and our apologies for the inconvenience!

The noon class at the Dupont Circle studio is being held if that's an option for you!

TSA Babies and Preparing for a Tranquil Birth...



Have you ever seen two more adorable and tranquil yogis? Meet two of our newest TSA students--practicing sphinx pose and enjoying each others company at Baby + Me last week.

Want to join them? We have a weekly Baby + Me class with Katie Kerstetter at 10:00am on Fridays at Tranquil Space Arlington. Parents, grandparents, caretakers, or and/friends + babies ages 0-6 months are welcome.

Similarly, if you're expecting, join Barbara Jazzo at TSA for our "Preparing for a Tranquil Birth" workshop THIS Saturday, 1/28, from 5-7pm.

The workshop description is below:

Come and learn how to prepare for labor and childbirth in a calm and peaceful way. We will discuss fundamental information about the labor and childbirth process, including birthing positions and coping strategies. We will then explore how various components of our yoga practice, postures, breath, and meditation can ease the birthing process. Through hands-on partner activities, we will practice additional comfort measures and also learn how to support a woman with epidural analgesia. This is ideal for women and their partners or support persons.

Barbara Jazzo will be teaching this class. She is a prenatal massage therapist and a certified childbirth educator (she currently teaches for George Washington and Georgetown Hospitals) and a long time meditator and yoga practitioner.

Member Feature: Priscilla Lund




This mid-month feature is to meet one of our Tranquil Space Members!

I am a native New Englander who moved to Washington, DC ten years ago. I joined Tranquil Space one year ago to fulfill a new year’s resolution to expand my home practice. Although I was disciplined about practicing yoga at home, I was beginning to feel that I was not challenging myself. My favorite poses are Ardha Chandrasana (Half-Moon), Virabhadrasana II (Warrior II), and Vrksasana (Tree). The poses that I tend to avoid are Ukatasana (Chair) and Paripurna Navasana (Boat). I am the Director of Admissions at Capitol Hill Day School and, although sometimes stressful, what I love most about my job is that I get to play regularly with 4 and 5 year olds. My hobbies are walking, cuddling with my cat Petunia, reading, traveling, and rooting for the Red Sox. The two bravest, or one could say craziest, things I’ve ever done are swim with piranhas in Ecuador and go para-sailing off a mountain in Switzerland.

Save the Date: Documentary Screening 3/2


I'm over the moon to share our first scheduled documentary screening in Tranquil Space Labs: Vegucated on Friday, March 2 7-9pm. Mingle off the mat, savor veggie treats, and cOMmune with fellow yogis over this eye-opening documentary. Floor seating. $10 suggested donation to Pigs Animal Sanctuary. Complimentary for members and team members. I saw this at a release in November and loved it - we hope you will, too!

Here's the skinny:
Vegucated is a feature-length documentary that follows three meat- and cheese-loving New Yorkers who agree to adopt a vegan diet for six weeks. There’s Brian, the bacon-loving bachelor who eats out all the time, Ellen, the single mom who prefers comedy to cooking, and Tesla, the college student who avoids vegetables and bans beans. They have no idea that so much more than steak is at stake and that the fate of the world may fall on their plates. Lured with true tales of weight lost and health regained, they begin to uncover hidden sides of animal agriculture and soon start to wonder whether solutions offered in films like Food, Inc. go far enough. Before long, they find themselves risking everything to expose an industry they supported just weeks before.

But can their conviction carry them when times get tough? What about on family vacations fraught with skeptical step-dads, carnivorous cousins, and breakfast buffets?

Part sociological experiment, part science class, and part adventure story, Vegucated showcases the rapid and at times comedic evolution of three people who share one journey and ultimately discover their own paths in creating a kinder, cleaner, greener world, one bite at a time.

Hip-Opening into the New Year Workshop
with Mary Catherine
Saturday 1/14 from 5:00-7:00pm
The perfect workshop for all who love their hip-openers (yogis who live in pigeon pose, we're talking to you!) or for those who may not love them, but know they need them. Join Mary Catherine for this workshop that will explore all sides of the hips through many different hip-opening asanas. We will focus on opening the hips from both an anatomical/functional mobility standpoint and from an energetic/emotional standpoint. The workshop will consist of a 1.5 hour heated, hip-opening vinyasa practice, followed by time for discussion, breaking down the poses, and journaling.
$35, members pay $29.75; if you register online $30, members pay $25.50.

Challenge Begins Monday!

The 21 day challenge is almost here!

Take 21 yoga classes in 21 days to be crowned one of our 21 day challengers.

For $139 (members, you can participate for free, just be sure to let us know so we can keep track of your classes), you'll get a 21 class pass good January 9th-January 29th.

All participants will be emailed a downloadable version of our challenge journal to track your progress and document your experience.

Upon completion, 21-day yogi's will receive:

Urban Women's Yoga Retreat
Sunday, January 8th from 12pm-3pm






Join Kimberly Wilson for an afternoon urban retreat for women. Spend part of your day basking in a slow, yet energetic flow topped with a restorative yoga practice, art journaling, and goal setting. Take time to rejuvenate and reflect through meditation, yoga, and creative play. Please bring a journal, an assortment of favorite images pulled from magazines, and intentions for the new year. All levels welcome. Tea, cookies, and inspiration will be served





Connecting to the Power of the Full Moon with Pari
Monday, January 9th from 6:30pm-8:00pm

Full moon yoga! This will be a 90 minute practice dedicated to slow moving moon salutations and deep hip openers. We will be exploring the power of the moon through awakening the 2nd chakra in the hip region and awakening our innate creative faculties, the ability to honor one another and make our dreams come true in 2012!

Happy New Year!

Wishing you a beautiful, tranquil start to the new year. As we transition into our 13th (yes, 13th - wow!) year of serving up tranquility, I want to thank you for your support. In January's newsletter muse I noted a few of 2011's highlights (which are many thanks to our team) and I want to unveil a few dreams for 2012. 

As you may know, construction will begin shortly on a revamped Dupont tea lounge complete with a fireplace for our cOMmunity to huddle around while partaking in signature tea and cookies. In addition, TS Labs will host additional yoga, mindfulness, do-gooding, and lifestyle events in alignment with our core values of creativity, cOMmunity, and compassion. We'll continue to serve our members ongoing gratitude-filled surprises such as the January 11 + 22 teas (members: see invites in your mat cubbies), members-only classes and specialty playshops. We'll be taking Tranquil Space global by launching our first online Tranquil Space Lifestyle e-course on February 1 to follow the 21-day challenge. There is more up our sleeves - from international retreats to teacher trainings to family yoga. Stay tuned as we continue to share all 2012 will offer our team, our yogis, and our cOMmunity at large.
