Niya Shah, the director of our karma program, is guest blogging about this Sunday’s karma class benefitting House of Ruth… we hope you can join us Sunday afternoon for a great class for an amazing cause!
This Sunday 4/8 from 3:30-4:30pm, I will be teaching an all-levels community karma yoga class ($5 donation) to benefit House of Ruth.
I am thrilled about donating my time to this organization – House of Ruth helps women, children and families who are dealing with homelessness and domestic violence to establish safe and stable lives in the DC area. The organization works with more than 1,000 women and children every year. Due to a recent cut in funding from the city (lost over $90,000), House of Ruth is relying on generous support from individuals and the general public to sustain its critical efforts. This class, your yoga will help bridge this gap in funding.
Just to give you an idea of how amazing this organization is – in 1976 House of Ruth opened the basement of a row house on Massachusetts Avenue to eight women who were homeless or destitute. There are now 13 “Houses of Ruth” that provide comprehensive services including housing for women and families in addition to community based services. In their programs, this organization assess the capacities and needs of EACH woman and child, then designs and deliver sa specialized combination of services to meet their specific needs and build on their strengths. On any given day, over 600 women and children are learning life skills that will enable them to live independently so they can eliminate abuse, homelessness and instability from their lives.
I hope you can join me and support this amazing local organization.
This all-levels class covers step-back sun salutations, standing poses, hip-openers, seated poses, twists, backbends, and basic inversions.
