January at Tranquil Space

Team Player of the Month: Dibora Amanuel

One of my first memories of Tranquil Space (TS) is from a time before I started practicing yoga there. On that day, I spent time with two wonderful friends right after they had finished taking a class at TS. As we talked about where they were before we met up, I remember that I felt happy and excited about the possibility of taking a class at TS with them someday soon thereafter. It is always fun to find an activity to share with great friends, and practicing yoga at TS quickly became a favorite shared activity. Nowadays, I love to see students meet their friends at TS to take a yoga class together, or to chat with new friends in the lounge before or after class. In general, it makes me happy to see people create and nurture warm, supportive connections, and it is really wonderful to see that happening on a regular basis at TS.

Asana of the Month: Savasana (Corpse Pose)

Each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons. Contributed by Danielle Polen

Psycotherapist and yoga teacher Michael Stone writes: “At the end of our asana practice we lie down, feet fallen outward, breath long, hands facing the sky, for savasana, corpse pose. By all accounts, corpse pose is considered the most difficult posture, as we posture the mind and body to imitate a corpse. ‘Most difficult for students,’ says Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, ‘not waking, not sleeping.’… Most of the time, we live in loops of distraction. Patanjali calls this avidya, or ignorance. Ignorance is related to the act of avoidance. In savasana, however, we need not avoid. We simply notice, with evenly hovering attention, whatever shows up, and then allow it to pass on, to die, so that we can arrive in the present moment. Savasana offers the possibility of ‘a small death, every moment, every day,’ says Pattabhi Jois."

My teacher, Sarah Powers, observes that savasana is “where we daily practice giving over our attachments to our particular gender, to our history, to our plans, to our bodies, and in little ways, walk into the mystery of what that means. Who are we without our bodies? Each day that you do a practice and you let go a little, you’re practicing for the possibility of continuing to let go more and more. If we let go a little, we’ll have a little peace, as the Theravada monks say, and if you let go fully, you’ll have full peace."

Savasana (Corpse Pose):
Sava = corpse
Asana = pose, posture

Benefits: (according to yogajournal.com)

  • Calms the brain and helps relieve stress and mild depression
  • Relaxes the body
  • Reduces headache, fatigue and insomnia
  • Helps to lower blood pressure
Cautions/Contraindications:
  • For back discomfort, the pose can be done with the knees bent and the feet on the floor, or with the knees supported on a bolster
  • During pregnancy, raise the head and chest
Preparatory Poses:
  • Savasana should conclude your practice
Song that Most Comes to Mind While in the Posture:
  • Absolutely none!

Yogi of the Month: Emily Gilcher

Yoga has been an incredible gift to me. I started practicing three years ago this January and I have kept coming back to the mat ever since. It is hard to say everything I have gotten from my practice because the transformations have been so numerous, but here are a few ways this practice has helped me on and off the mat: I have learned how breathing can change my whole body and mind in a moment, I have learned that balance is a dynamic experience, I have learned that I can move into and release tightness one breath at a time, I have learned that my body is beautiful, I have learned that I am powerful, I have been reminded that I am part of nature, and I have learned that Krishna Das is a perfectly acceptable and pleasurable CD to listen to on my commute.

As an acupuncturist (www.emilygilcheracupuncture.com), my work (which I feel so deeply privileged to do) is to help people move more deeply into their bodies and reconnect with their body’s wisdom. With yoga, I know that I have been able to take this work to a deeper and more powerful place for my clients in all stages of their healing, and that is because through my own treatments (acupuncture AND yoga), I now know my own ability to heal and transform.

Thank you Tranquil Space, especially Jodi, Mary Catherine, Diane, Todd, Colleen and Katie, and all the teachers and staff who make it all come together seamlessly (including my dear cousin, Megan)! It is a pleasure to be a part of this community of kindness, gentleness, and joy. You are deeply embedded in my life.

Teacher Feature: Diane Renzulli

Favorite part of teaching yoga? Hearing from students how they applied something they learned in yoga class off the mat.

Where did you grow up? Fairfield, Connecticut

Favorite movie? “A Philadelphia Story” because it is pure magic.

What inspires you? People who feel passionate about something –I don’t have to share their passion for it, it just inspires me to see people find something that brings joy and meaning to their lives.

Favorite food? Eggplant parmesan made by my aunt, Isabelle Renzulli

Favorite quote? A framed Jack London quote a mentor took off his office wall and gave to me:

“I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.”
Dream vacation or favorite vacation you've ever been on? First time traveling on my own, backpacking through Australia and New Zealand.

Favorite yoga pose and why?
Actually it’s Tadasana because it’s a metaphor for so many things in life—much harder than it seems at first glance.

Favorite album or artist? Jeff Tweedy (love, love, love when Wilco songs appear in yoga playlists)

A Fresh Start: January Muse

 photo + art by Kimberly

"Observe the wonders as they occur around you. Don't claim them.
Feel the artistry moving through and be silent.” - Rumi

WelcOMe to *almost* 2012. A new year, a fresh start. It's that special time of the year to take a step back to evaluate where you are, where you've been, and where you're heading. Each year I enjoy reflecting on highlights, lessons learned, and dreams for the following year. This process brings back good memories, a sense of gratitude, and offers an opportunity to ensure movement in a direction aligned with values. For yogis this is an important aspect of our practice and it's called svadhyaya (self study) - one of the ten moral codes of yoga. I love the above quote by Rumi as it serves as the perfect reminder to slow down, reflect, explore, and dig deeper.

Let's get started, pull out your journal, and pour a mug of hot cocoa (top with vegan marshmallows). Go through your photos or planner and note the highlights of your yearlong journey. What stands out? How did you spend your time? Where did you travel? What did you read? How did your spiritual practice unfold? I posted my year in review sharing pictorial highlights tonight and it helped me recall what a blessed year it has been - sprinkled with simple pleasures, connections, and sensory experiences. A few 2011 highlights include India Night, Benefit for the Animals, launching TS Labs and weekly TS TV episodes, Tranquil Space Foundation efforts, team retreats, Climate Ride support, incorporation of vintage and reclaimed goods into our green boutique offerings, launch of rewards program, raising over $2000 for So Others Might Eat at our Thanksgiving classes, supporting Pigs Animal Sanctuary board, our sponsorship of National Conference to End Factory Farming, and our team holiday fete at Elizabeth's Gone Raw. What are your highlights? Can you bring them together in visual form? Collage, doodle, list them, or pull together photos of your year.

Next, review the year's challenges (aka growth opportunities) to label as lessons learned. For me, a few stand out: release what isn't working, schedule creativity, embrace simplicity, express gratitude constantly, lean into eccentricities, dance with joy, communicate compassionately (highly recommend Nonviolent Communication), keep working with spaciousness (and remember it when over-scheduling!), and don't take things personally. What lessons are you taking away from your experiences this year? Is there a theme that emerged?

Now it's time to look forward. What do you dream for 2012? For me, it's an ongoing journey to be strategic with my time and energy. Since I oversee five organizations including two yoga studios, volunteer, design TranquiliT eco-collection, "mother" three furry creatures, and am pursuing a Master's in Social Work, this is more important than ever. A few more of my 2012 dreams include: Create (and sustain) morning and evening routines. Do all I can for the animals. Nurture our yoga cOMmunity. Read 2 books (in addition to school books) each month. Teach inspiring yoga classes. Live these zen habits. Indulge in an art retreat (scenes from my 2011 indulgence). Do daily sun salutations. Craft inspiring videos, podcasts, and e-courses. Offer more Tranquil Teens programs through Tranquil Space Foundation. Dance. When you ponder what you want your life to look like December 31, 2012, what do you see? Take a moment to collage, draw, dream, pen, or paint it. Choose a word or mantra to focus on in 2012. Alas, spaciousness remains mine . . . for the fourth year in a row.

During a recent mindfulness meditation workshop, teacher Gina Sager said, "Live each moment as if it is truly the last - feel the engagement in each moment. You choose what you attend to and how. Reality depends on how we see. What if your expectations are what creates the problem?" What a great reminder as we journey into this new year! As we cross the threshold into a brand new year, I wish you oodles of tranquility. Raise a glass to 2011. Honor your efforts, tie a bow around it, and let it go. Toast to a dedication of Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu and let your thoughts, words, and actions contribute to the happiness and freedom of all beings.

May you bask in the wonder of 2012. Happiest of new years to you. You are beautiful. And you are full of potential. Relish in being uniquely, fabulously you this year. Let your light shine, the world is waiting.

Namaste,
Kimberly

Thank You!

2011 was a great year for the Tranquil Space boutique and I want to thank everyone who has made it a success. If you made a purchase during our first ever December boutique fete, we hope you enjoyed the gift wrapping, munchies, Prosecco and discount. It was a nice way to close out the year.

I appreciated all the input and suggestions for new merchandise and I plan to continue bringing in unique items for the coming year. With each January there is a trip the gift fair in New York City. My helpers (Julia Coney & Patricia Cervini) will help me tune into current trends and other ideas that you have brought to my attention.

The Dupont boutique and front desk area will receive a make-over this year that will give us a streamlined look. This may mean less items, but a more mindful approach to how we display merchandise. Hopefully this will enhance your shopping experience.

Thanks again for a wonderful year and looking forward to an even better 2012!

7 Tips for a Tranquil Holiday

7 Tips for a Tranquil Holiday

1. Reflect: 2011 was filled with heaps of fun memories! Reflect on what made this year special for you. Join us on new years eve for our Reflect, Release, and Restore workshop with Mary Catherine or curl up at home with your journal as you reflect on this past year.

2. Rest: Take a moment and pause from the shopping lists, the cookie baking, and the last minute holiday cards to have an "ahhhh" moment of rest. Curl up with your bolster and indulge in some restorative poses. These poses will leave you feeling rested and ready to take on whatever Santa throws your way!

3. Routine: Amongst all of the holiday hoopla, it's easy to forget about our daily routines that help us maintain a sense of balance. Try to stick to your routine of healthy living by not over-indulging in yummy desserts (please, by all means, enjoy one piece of pecan pie), continuing your physical activities such as yoga (we are open every day but December 25 with our modified holiday schedule, come join us for class), and most importantly, maintaining a healthy amount of meditation and restful sleep.

4. Retreat: Enjoy moments of retreating from the celebration by taking some time for yourself. Sip tea. Do yoga. Watch your favorite holiday movie. Paint a picture. Cuddle with your pup. However you "escape", allow yourself a few moments for you.

5. Receive: Give yourself the opportunity to receive the gifts that loved ones have provided just for you. You deserve it!

6. Remember: Holidays are about more than just giving and receiving. Take a few moments this season to contemplate what the holidays are really about and try to spread some real holiday cheer.

7. Repay: Take your yoga off the mat by giving back to those in need. Whatever your cause, support them during this time of giving.

We will be open every day (except December 25) with our modified holiday schedule.

Wishing you the most tranquility-filled of holidays!

Off the Mat Activites: The TSA Book Club

The TSA cOMmunity wants to give a BIG thanks to the dedicated yogis who made it out to our second Tranquil Space Arlington Book Club Meeting on Sunday night. Cold weather and busy holiday schedules did not keep us from putting together a fun group and discussing Don Miguel Ruiz's book, The Four Agreements. Lisa brought a festive array of cookies and we had a lively discussion about the book inspired by Toltec wisdom. Thanks to all who joined us!

Our next TSA Book Club meeting will be on Sunday, February 19, when we will be reading & discussing Myths of the Asanas by Alanna Kaivalya. See you there!

Namaste and happy holidays!
