Imagine…
Imagine practicing yoga as the sun rises over the Caribbean, or meditating under a sky full of stars at night. Spend the days exploring ancient civilizations, swimming in brilliant, cerulean waters, or just relaxing on the beach. Walk or bike to the sacred ruins of the fortified Mayan city of Tulum, or enjoy an excursion to a local fresh-water cenote. Unplug and get away from it all during a magical, healing week of bliss.
Sounds Good?
The turquoise waters of the Caribbean will be your backdrop for a week of yoga, relaxation, and restoration! Join Kevin and Danielle for their third annual tropical Yin-Yang yoga retreat—this year at a new location in the mystical land of the Maya. Spend a magical week in paradise at Amansala, near Tulum, Mexico. The name “Amansala” comes from two Sanskrit words: Peace and Water. This gorgeous, eco-chic resort and spa sits on the edge of the Caribbean sea, with the whitest sand and the bluest waters imaginable.
Then Join Danielle and Kevin for our Yin-Vinyasa Yoga Retreat to Mexico! January 28 to February 2, 2012. Only six (6) spots left so sign up here!

Last week, Tranquil Space's Julie Flygare was featured on NBC Washington in a segment entitled, "Woman's Narcolepsy Like Living a Nightmare." The segment tells the story of Julie's struggle with Narcolepsy over the years, and in Julie's words, is "extremely accurate and the attention to detail is amazing." Julie is currently working on a memoir about her experience with Narcolepsy, and in this memoir she also talks about yoga's role in her life over the years. You can view the segment (and see Julie practicing yoga at TSA in her I heart TS tee!) below:

This week, we unveil our newest idea: Tranquil Space Labs. Our studio values includes creativity and TS Labs is our way of trying out new things: innovative series, workshops, lectures, documentary screenings, teacher training and more! TS Labs events will be at both studio locations, but at the Dupont Circle studio, we're building our very own "lab" to house some of these events. Here's a look at the progress that began on Monday:

This past weekend, one of our TSA members, Kathy Kerr, sent us the following birthday reflection via email. We're so happy to be able to share her "yoga success story" and all of the wonderful ways that her practice has changed her life over the past year...
November 12, 2011
Today is my birthday! I am 58 years old. My body has gone through so many amazing life changes--birth, babies, breastfeeding, motherhood, menopause. A year ago I resigned myself to being a little stiff, a little overweight, a little “old.” I bought my son a nice yoga mat for Christmas so I got one for myself too. I imagined yoga classes would be boring--holding poses for a long time. But since I had that nice mat, I decided to try a TS newbie class on January 22.
Jodi is a wonderful teacher. It was not boring! But it was all so uncomfortable. My wrists! My knees! My balance! My stamina! But after taking advantage of the newbie week I was amazed that I had effortlessly lost a couple of troublesome pounds. I tried the one month class pass. I became more flexible. My hips felt “rolly.” My posture improved. My inner organs were massaged. I felt empowered. My heart expanded. I found wonderful changes in my meditation. (I have practiced Transcendental Meditation for 35 years.)
I had no idea yoga would be such a great physical workout. I recently hiked in Colorado mountains and was not sore the next day. My weight is still normalizing, down at least 10 lbs, because I have an intuitive desire to eat less and to eat better. Recent blood work shows my cholesterol etc. has much improved. My mother, age 87, lives with us. I especially appreciate yoga as part of caring for myself so that I can care for her.
I am a year older today, but actually feel younger than I did a year ago. I am truly grateful to be a TS member. I have enjoyed and benefited from every class I have been to. Thank you so much to all of the wonderful teachers and caring staff at Tranquil Space in Arlington.
Soundtrack: My Back Pages by Bob Dylan, “Ah but I was so much older then. I’m younger than that now.”
Thank you for sharing your story with us, Kathy! And happy belated birthday from the entire TS team :)
Do *YOU* have a yoga or Tranquil Space story that you want to share? We'd love to read it and/or share it with the cOMmunity!
Namaste.

Tranquil Space has been such an immensely important constant in my ever-changing life since I first walked up the steps of the old P Street studio over 5 years ago as a yogi in the larva stage. Over time, I came to know and love everyone and everything about the studio. The phenomenal teachers have helped me through tough times, to stay positive, grounded, and to be present and focused... content. When I come to child's pose during a strenuous class, I find myself being gently patted as an encouragement for honoring where I'm at. Or when I find myself in a yoga 3 tip toeing up toward my edge, there's a teacher there to helpfully encourage me to take another nudge forward, or not. Everything just feels right. I know I am exactly where I am supposed to be. Whether you are in a Restorative class or a Yoga 3, you will be encouraged, inspired, nurtured, assisted, and motivated.
At Tranquil Space I have been through many roles- I started as a student, then worked behind the desk, then I became a manager, and after going through teacher training I became a studio assistant and now.... finally, I am a teacher. And I certainly do revel in my new form, I am a butterfly.
Beyond yoga? Well, when I'm not at yoga, I am thinking about being at yoga... and how to apply yoga principles to my life off the mat. Recently however, I also found Fuse Pilates and jumped into that teacher training, and have been exploring tuning into my core quite a bit since this discovery, as well. I live in DC with two adorable, loving kitties, Razzy and Patches, and my equally adorable Beau. I get back to Boston as much as possible to see my family there and miss friends at home, dearly. Between full time work, time with kitties, Beau and friends, and teaching about 7 classes a week on average, I live a pretty full (read: bursting at the seams) life, and I like it that way! I'm happy with my life journey so far, and mindfully flowing into the rest of it.
