WelcOMe to October

Scenes from Sunday's annual team retreat

Happy 12 Years Tranquil Space! (+ 7 years to Tranquility du Jour blog + 6 years to Tranquility du Jour podcast - whew, LOTS o' anniversaries in October!)

As you may know, we began with humble roots in my 4th floor walk-up at 16th and U Street 12 years ago and have been tinkering with tranquility ever since. Below is a timeline that showcases our evolution over the years - from the launch of teacher trainings, our non-profit, international retreats, charity events, additional locations, TranquiliT, and Tranquil Space TV. It takes a village and none of this could have happened without our amazing team and cOMmunity! So thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting the tranquility movement.

As we head into another year at Tranquil Space, I am filled with gratitude for the ongoing evolution of a tiny seedling that grew out of a deep desire to connect with like-minded individuals around a fire while sipping homemade chai post-practice. I'm constantly amazed at what can grow from an idea when sprinkled with love, reflection, patience, and heaps of hard work. Oh, and an unbelievable team full of passion for the yoga lifestyle doesn't hurt!

I've been devouring Start Something that Matters by TOMS shoe founder and am more and more committed to make Tranquil Space a socially conscious organization every single day. We do this through small acts of recycling to our 1% for the Planet membership to donating resources to organizations making a difference in the lives of *all* beings (especially pigs - my latest obsession). I truly believe that Tranquil Space exists to serve - clients, our beloved cOMmunity, 4-legged friends, and society at large. Otherwise, why bother? Yes, yoga is powerful. But yoga is even more powerful when reaching beyond the 6'x2' yoga mat!

After hosting Sunday's Urban Retreat, I received an email from a participant who stated that until reading Hip Tranquil Chick, she didn't understand how yoga translated into her everyday. Now she gets it and enjoys the exploration of it in her daily life. THIS is our raison d'être (of course I had to throw in some French)! How are you taking your yoga into the office, affiliations, home, weekend brunch, and free time? Let's all seek ways each and every day to sprinkle tranquility through our thoughts, words, and actions.

May fall bring you mOMents of rejuvenation topped with kale chips and jasmine green tea coupled with an ongoing opportunity to live your yoga. Thank you for 12 amazing years!

Living yoga with you,
Kimberly Wilson

Teacher Feature: Jennifer Triassi

I am thrilled to be part of the teaching team at Tranquil Space, leading the Sat 12:15 pm Open Flow and Sun 6:00 pm Restorative at Arlington. My absolute favorite part of teaching is providing assists and adjustments for my students. I am continually amazed at what our bodies can do "with just a little help from our friends." My favorite pose to practice is triangle for it's deep opening of the hips and hamstrings and the lengthening of the spine and side waist; my home practice is not complete without it!

Off the mat, I enjoy spending time with my husband Mike and 17-month old yogini Sofie Rose---who continually inspires me to be the best person/ mommy I can be! When I'm not chasing Sofie, I like to curl up on the couch with a good read (anything yoga-related, currently loving Poser by Claire Dederer) and my three matching Shih Tzu fur babies. Dogs are natural yogis and I would join their ranks if I could! I've stopped counting how many times I've watched my favorite movies (three-way tie between Lonesome Dove, Steel Magnolias, and For Love of the Game). I snack on pomegranates and mangoes because they are so yummy and provide heaping doses of anti-oxidants. I have a passion for baking sinfully decadent cheesecakes because they are classic, challenging to bake, and have always been my mom's favorite dessert. I love to spend holidays, especially Thanksgiving, with my family back home in rural Pennsylvania----complete with pumpkin cheesecake on gingersnap crust!

Yogi of the month: Candace Beck

I found Tranquil Space one summer evening walking down P Street in 2004. My heart had just been broken because I had to move back to DC from New Mexico (one true love of mine). Since that time, Tranquil Space has been there for me. That summer, it nurtured me into understanding that community is what you make it and to realize I was back in DC because I was meant to be here for now.

That same summer, I found out my husband and I were to have a baby. TS mid-wifed me during my pregnancy and in the early months after Kate was born (she is now 6!) – when yoga was what I did for myself, to build myself back for me and to be strong for Kate. In 2007, my marriage fell apart and with it my world (or what I thought my world was supposed to be) shattered. I fell absolutely to the floor with grief, panic and all of the emotions that come with feeling completely groundless. Kimberly and her hip opener workshop that Spring gave me real space to work on releasing my marriage and all I was holding onto, to forgive and take the exhales I needed. I weekly regained strength and love through classes with Carol, Anne, Siobhan, Dibora, Kevin, Danielle, Caroline.

It took a few years, but I was able to rebuild, regroup, and heal. TS was (and still is) a key life force through it all. I found true love and married my wonderful partner last year, and I was able to leave my full-time, stressful, energy –depleting legal job downtown. I just launched my own business online http://candacesmyth.com to nurture and support women going through divorce with practical legal strategy and Ayurveda (because yoga and healing are essential). [Another aside, I learned about Ayurveda in December 2009 during my first Ayurveda session with Anne (thank you Anne). I will be a certified Ayurveda counselor by the end of the year.]

I owe so much to Tranquil Space and all of my yoga instructors – the ones I mentioned above and Pari, Diane, Susanna, and Melissa, and everyone that works at TS to make it what it is (Tim, Sara etc.). Through all of the trauma, difficult life challenges, and the daily grind of being a mom and working, TS has been my lodestar. It has been my constant moon - the light I always knew I could come back to for a true hug. Thank you! Namaste.

Team Player of the month: Marie Maroun

Stresses of everyday life press upon us and create tensions not only in our muscles, but in our minds. For several years, I heard friends of mine talk about yoga and describe the immense relaxation - both in mind and body - they would have after taking a class. I figured I had to give it a try. That's when I found Tranquil Space and started taking classes. I learned how to exhale the stresses out of my life. I learned how to push my body to the next level and expunge what was ailing it. I learned that balance is not only a part of yoga, but a part of everyday life. I also learned that yoga - like everything else - is a work in progress and never ending. What's more, being a part of the Tranquil Space community has enriched my life. Seeing the relief on yogis' faces as they pass in and out of Tranquil Space's doors puts a smile on my face, while working with all the lovely and wonderful people at Tranquil Space has been both a refreshing experience and a great source of happiness.

Asana of the Month: Kurmasana (Tortoise Pose)

Each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.
On a purely physical level Kurmasana opens the hips and stretches the legs, back, and shoulders, and tones the abdominal organs. It is also said that this posture draws the focus of the mind inward and promotes surrender, inner security, and tranquility. As B.K.S. Iyengar notes in Light on Yoga,"[t}th mind becomes calm and composed and one develops equanimity, whether in sorrow or joy. It will gradually become free from anxiety amid pains and indifferent among pleasures, while the emotions of passion, fear and anger will loosen their hold upon the mind."

Kurmasana (Tortoise Pose):
Kurma-tortoise

Benefits (according to Light on Yoga):
  • Tones and strengthens the spine
  • Stretches the insides and backs of the legs
  • Activates the abdominal organs
  • Soothes the nerves of the brain
Cautions/Contraindications:
  • Shoulder, low back or hamstring injuries
Preparatory Poses:
  • Baddha Konasana
  • Upavhista Konasana (Wide-Angle Seated Forward Bend)
  • Pasarita Padottanasana (Wide-Legged Forward Bend)
  • Uttanasana (Standing Forward Fold)
  • Ananda Balasana (Happy Baby Pose)
Song that Most Comes to Mind While in the Posture:
The Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Yertle the Turtle"

New Fall Arrivals

The sun is setting sooner, the air is becoming crisp and you may be switching out your closets to store away the summer gear.

There is nothing like some sparkly jewelry to help jazz up your autumnal attire. Our friends at Dogeared do it again with their Karma and 3 wishes lines. New teardrop gemstone necklaces and other styles are stocked in Arlington.

We always are looking to have gifts for you and your loved ones and it's never to early to think about the holidays. Check out the lovely French soaps and lavender bath salts from La Lavande. Choose from lemongrass, green tea, honey almond, citrus fruit, lavender and mint leaves.

We are all about recycled and being kind to Mother Earth. Fresh off the sewing machine are these cute reclaimed TS t-shirt bags. Look at how green and sporty Kimberly looks holding one in black with white accents.

You Say Hello, Your Clothes Say Goodbye

On September 18, over 20 yoginis gathered and unfolded some once-loved items from their wardrobes onto the Earth studio floor. As each yogini arrived, the ground sank deeper beneath layers of merino, cotton blends, silks and gabardines. As with layers of fossils, these stratified cloth mounds contained eons of personal history; the memories worn into each cardigan, skirt, or shirt sat lay waiting to be passed on. There was scarcely space to plant two feet or sit indian style, but we cozied up on this couture carpet supplied by our community and began to 'swap'.

So how does a room full of females and stylish clothes attempt to sort out who goes home with a coveted knit sweater or khaki dress? Quite tranquilly, actually! Perhaps in the retail wilderness you've seen teeth gnashed or hair torn, but at Tranquil Space's ChariTea Swap Shop, there were only sisterly smiles and encouraging bits of fashion advice as we spent the afternoon playing dress up together. We took turns auctioning the items and letting the most giddy or most harmonious fit strut it out. No walk offs were necessary, although next time perhaps we will encourage them. Each of us walked home with some new-to-us items and the memories and experiences woven into them, turning a fall wardrobe cleanse into a fun and purposeful event.

As I’ve been doing swaps with friends for several years, I’ve come to enjoy the gatherings and the lingering reminder of the donor as much as the articles of clothing I’ve received. Each time I wear something from a swap, I enjoy sharing my secondhand savvy with others and proudly remark on how – and who – I got this new fashion from.

Our ChariTea Swap raised money for My Sister’s Place and the remaining clothes were donated to the ladies of N Street Village. If you missed this event but wanted to come, let us know by commenting so we can try to place a spring swap on the Tranquil Space calendar!

The Spa at Tranquil Space

Since 2003, Tranquil Space has offered massage and other spa services at our Dupont Circle studios. Unfortunately, due to major changes in DC requirements, we are sadly bidding adieu to spa services after October 31st. We have worked hard to avoid this, however the District's new requirements treat our very small spa the same as large day spas, placing too heavy a burden to continue.

This is an unfortunate outcome, but we truly treasure the relationships we developed over the years with our spa team and honor their commitment, professionalism and boundless dedication. We've also loved bringing this extra dose of tranquility to our clients over the years. While we will no longer offer massage at Tranquil Space, we hope that those of you who love our therapists continue to work with them at other locations, as they are (in our biased opinions!) the best of the best in the area.

We have a vision for the future of the spa space, which we'll reveal later. In the meantime, please consider indulging in one more treatment with our fabulous team.
