Hurricanes + Online system changes

We have a couple of things blowing in over the course of the next few weeks...

Saturday Sunday: As you might have heard, we're expecting a cranky visitor by the name of Irene early Sunday morning mid afternoon Saturday. Long time Tranquil Spacers know we don't close down for earthquakes or even Snowpocolypses, so I don't anticipate any changes to Saturday Sunday schedules. That being said, please be careful coming in as it looks like there's a strong chance of heavy rain and... I know... shockingly... from a hurricane... gusty winds. Stay tuned to the TS blog, Facebook and Twitter for updates as we get closer.

Friday 9/7: We just got word that the online system we use for class registration and online purchases will be updating its look and feel two weeks from tomorrow. You'll also be able to login with your email address rather than having to remember your username every time. Although it might look a little different, it's all the same under the hood. If you have any trouble booking your classes, workshops, or spa treatments when the system transitions, please let us know.

Reflections on Disney Institute

Last week Tim and I spent 5 days at Disney Institute in Orlando learning all sorts of creative tools. Professional development is at the core of our culture and we've been looking forward to this since registering last December. My favorite surprises at Disney were riding the carousel, stumbling upon a 6-piece band playing big band tunes in a hotel lobby, and shopping/dining in "Paris" in the world showcase at Epcot (where i picked up a pink eiffel tower + A Literary Paris). Disney calls these "magical moments" and I agree!

In my early Oklahoma years, I grew up driving to ghost towns, forts, and national parks for family vacations so the whole Disney thing was most foreign. All this for a mouse? At one point in our training we were working as a group to come up with as many Disney characters as possible. I threw out "Tinklebell!" with pride. Only to be big leagued by Disney expert Tim, "um, it's Tinkerbell." I let others in the group take the lead after that faux pas. Oh, and when Mickey surprised us at graduation, I was the first one up squealing and clapping. I guess there is something about that mouse after all!

After 40 hours of training last week, I'm still processing all the information. We learned about leadership excellence, inspiring creativing, brand loyalty, quality service, and people management. During the training, we were taken to backstage park settings, shown historical and current videos, and immersed in Disney as a culture of imagination.

Perfectly aligned, I came across this article via twitter today on how Walt Disney worked his imagination. More to be unveiled as Tim and I sit down to process the week. Maybe even a podcast to share it all? Hmmmm. We look forward to sharing Tranquil Space's 5-year vision at our upcoming annual team retreat and hosting a team tea to share takeaways to any of our interested 100 team members.

We consistently strive to be a true tranquil space in the Washington area - a haven from the hustle and bustle of city living. As we move toward celebration of our 12th year, I remain focused on creating an organization that exists to make a difference in the lives of all beings. Yoga is truly a catalyst.

Thank you for joining me, my amazing team, and each other on this journey a la tranquility. Namaste.

cOMmunity Update

We all know August is a time for travel so take a peak below to see where the TranquiliTees have been in the past couple of weeks.

TSA teacher, Katie Kerstetter, did a little leaning with the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy.

Beloved yogi (and glass pearl mala designer), Carol Meyers enjoyed an Italian market in Philadelphia while donning her TS gear. A little vino anyone?

And, although it doesn't follow our Italian theme, we're thrilled to welcome little Heath William into the Tranquil Space family! He was born on August 12 to TS member, Jessica Snyder. Congratulations!

Jessica shared this story about her delivery:

"During labor and pushing the nurses kept saying you're pushing so fast and have a great core...which led to a full conversation about Tranquil Space! Seriously you guys got me through it. I am a loyal member for life!"

We're just happy to have been a part a safe welcome for baby Heath. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

As if one adorable baby wasn't enough for a complete blog post, we've got another to share! Tranquil Space yogi, Jocelyn Aqua, snapped this photo of baby Ivy wearing a retro Tranquil Space onesie. Could Ivy be any happier to be promoting her favorite yoga studio?

Have a cOMmunity update to share? Submit photos to info@tranquilspace.com.

We will discuss the physical and emotional impacts the birth process has on a woman's body as well as some developmental milestones of babies 0-12 months.

Day 2: Developing Your Own Postnatal Yoga Class

This session will include a practical demonstration of how a baby can be included in asana practice as well as suggestions for playful interaction with the child. Students will spend some time developing and reflecting on their own philosophy of teaching such a class. In the final segment of the training, students will teach a short postnatal yoga class to the group and provide feedback to each other.

Poems of Awakening

A friend of the studio and yogi, Betsy Small has edited a book of spiritual poetry, entitled Poems of Awakening. We are pleased to be one of the places that is carrying this little gem. Full of inspirational poems from all over the world with themes of stillness, healing, renewing and the all-surrounding grace.

This collection is great for yoga teachers looking for a inspiring quote or reading during a class. It's also a wonderful read for anyone seeking positive affirmations. Don't take my word for it, read the great endorsement from renowned yoga teacher and author Judith Lasater:

In today’s world, we all need many sources of inspiration, and Betsy Small’s Poems of Awakening is a deep one. The poems, and the feelings they evoke, appeal to the best part of ourselves. Highly recommended for yoga practitioners and anyone who aspires to continue to live with an open, joyous heart in the midst of challenges.”—Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D, PT, yoga teacher since 1971 and author of eight books including Yogabody: Anatomy, Kinesiology, and Asana.

A Day at the Beach + YOGA = End of Summer Bliss!

Bid adieu to summer by joining Jodi, Jen and fellow TS yogis for a one day excursion to the Delaware beaches on Saturday, August 27. During this retreat we will bathe ourselves in the ocean’s blissful embrace, ignite our prana as we breathe in the fresh ocean air, meditatively flow in the sand and on the water, and soak up some natural vitamin-rich rays. Upon arrival to the beaches we will set up our day camp. You will have the opportunity to play on the water with a variety of fun water toys including kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and surfboards. Lessons will be offered to those new to any of these water activities. In addition to the water activities, Jodi and Jen will lead a yoga class on the beach. Our bus will leave at 7:00am from Tranquil Space Arlington and will depart from the beaches around 7:30pm (arriving back in Virginia around 10pm).

Cost is $185. Roundtrip bus fare, rentals, gratuities and lessons as well as a donation to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation are all included. Food and drinks are not. Most if not all of the day will be spent on the beach, so be prepared to enjoy the day outside! A suggested packing list for the day along with a group itinerary will be sent out the week leading up to the day retreat. Space is limited so sign up online today! Please note that the deadline for registering for this excursion is Friday, August 12.

Peruse a few photos from last year's trip below...see you there!

Is an Ayurvedic consultation right for me?

Most people in the yoga world are by now at least randomly acquainted with the healing art and science of Ayurveda. For those who are not: Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical system that has often been termed the sister science of yoga. It focuses on determining a person’s dominant functional energy/energies and how to bring/keep these in balance so that the person may enjoy a long life filled with health and well-being.

Who should make an appointment for an Ayurvedic consultation? Can people who suffer from an illness benefit from this, or only those who are healthy?

Generally speaking, anybody can benefit from an Ayurvedic consultation. In my experience, I have seen three types of clients:
  1. The person who is simply curious to learn more about Ayurveda and would like to hear what Ayurveda would recommend for their body type.
  2. The person who is overall healthy, but does not feel at their best. This could mean that their digestion is not functioning properly, they are struggling to sleep through the night, their energy level does not feel optimal etc. This person does not feel 100% well, but also does not feel bad enough to go and see a medical professional and so is curious to see whether some lifestyle adjustments might bring them closer to their optimum.
  3. The person who is dealing with some known illness and is in medical care and wants to know whether there are any lifestyle adjustments that would help.

What can you expect from an Ayurvedic consultation?

When you schedule your appointment, you will receive an intake form with some questions about your general health and about your lifestyle. You will also be asked to keep a record of your food intake for a few days. During the consultation, we will briefly review the principles of Ayurveda (depending on how familiar you are with them). It is important to me that we discuss the ‘bigger picture’ so that you understand the specific recommendations I will be making. We will then look at your food and lifestyle routines to consider which adjustments might bring some more balance into your life. This can range from adjusting your sleep/wake rhythm, to your exercise routine and your food choices.

Anne Thiel is a certified massage therapist and also an ayurvedic lifestyle consultant. Passionate about the wisdom of this ancient Indian healing science, she seeks to help clients identify lifestyle changes that allow them to find more balance and harmony in their lives. To check Anne's appointment availability, please call the studio at 202-328-9642.

For more information on Ayurveda, check out this video on debunking Ayurveda myths that Anne filmed as one of our Monthly Tranquility Tips.

Teacher Feature: Chuck Zebrowski

I grew up in the mid-west. We moved around a lot when I was young. My dad's job was to put boilers in power plants and most of them were along the Ohio river where it was easy to get coal to the plants. We lived in other places too - Louisiana, Illinois, Virginia, and Michigan. We moved almost every year or every other year. As a kid it was fun because I got to meet new kids all the time. It wasn't so much fun when I got to high school and had to deal with the pre-formed clicks that exist at that age. I've been in DC longer than anywhere else - by far! I've been here 25 years so its home. I started taking yoga about 10 years ago when Tranquil Space was in the church. Yoga came to me at a time when I needed it. I was going through a divorce and had to deal with lots of unpleasantness. I found yoga helped my body but mostly helped me to slow my mind down and to keep calm and open. Its a practice, no doubt, and not perfection. There are often challenges, particularly in the hot weather we've been having, but I'm grateful for the moments of peace I can find when I can find them.
Why do I teach yoga? Its fun. It can be a creative outlet for me and people seem to enjoy it. I use to teach climbing but find that yoga is much more complicated and infinite in its possibilities. What else do I do besides yoga? Many of you know that I'm a climber - that's my passion in life for now. It gives me the opportunity to go to beautiful places and climb amazing pieces of rock. In a few weeks I'll be going to Squamish in British Columbia - a lovely place with very tall faces to climb. Like yoga, climbing makes me be totally in the moment. Totally in my body. Totally focused. It clears the mind and renews the soul.
I've had the opportunity to practice with several great teachers over the last few years. As many of you may know, I took Ana Forrest's teacher training a few years ago and have studied more with one of her master teachers, Heidi Sormaz from New Haven. Both were great experiences that challenged me physically and emotionally. I think that's what yoga is meant to do for us - provide the challenge. We then get the opportunity to see how we react to it and resolve it for ourselves. Yoga can be a gateway to change. It has been in my life and I hope you find it in yours.

Introducing TranquiliT Vintage/Reclaimed

Did you like to play dress up in your mom's closet? Remember how fun it was to put on those fun clothes and how sparkly grown up they made you feel? Leave it to Kimberly Wilson to bring our customers cool vintage pieces from her travels that may remind you of those moments or if you just have a thing for vintage clothing.

Come and peruse these great finds as they are one of a kind and they are sure to sprout wings and fly off the shelves. Peep the photos below and envision yourself in one of these beautiful garments.

The best thing about these pieces is that you are being a green shopper. No new fabric had to be created, there were no gas cost involved to ship the items to a store and you get to look fabulous and helping mother Earth in the process.

Read these interesting facts:
  1. The United States of America puts between 4 to 8 million tons of clothes in the landfills each year. There are 2,000 lbs. In a ton. Eight million tons is 16,000,000,000 lbs.
  2. The average American discards 68 pounds of clothes every year, but buys only 10 pounds of recycled clothing.
  3. According to Earth 911, people who bought used clothing by shopping at second-hand or consignment stores helped to save 2.5 billion pounds of clothes from the dumpster in 2006 alone.

Spa Spotlight: Amy Detgen

I recently had the great fortune to go on a weekend yoga retreat—a complete luxury for me as the busy working mom of a toddler. It was a wonderful break that rejuvenated me physically and mentally. I also scheduled a massage while I was away and was so glad that I did. I noticed that the massage helped me to slow down, to let go of tension, and to fully relax. I told the massage therapist about a huge knot in my shoulder so he spent some focused time there. Of course, as a massage therapist myself, I constantly try to work out my own knots…but there’s something very different about lying on a table and letting go. I also constantly try to stretch out my shoulder in various yoga poses. I know that yoga helps me but I have seen how massage complements my yoga practice and enables a deeper release of muscle tension. Plus the very fact that I don’t have to do anything means a total surrender for my muscles and my mind! I encourage anyone who has muscle tension or mental tension to explore how massage can help you reach a new level of relaxation and tranquility.

Asana of the Month: Astavakrasana (Eight Angle Pose

Each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.
According to Light on Yoga, Astavakrasana is dedicated to the sage Astavakra who, while still in his mother’s womb, corrected his father’s recitation of verses from the Rig Veda. Enraged, his father cursed his son to be born crooked in eight places, thus earning the boy the name Astavakra, or Eight-Crooks (angles). Despite his father’s curse, Astavakra remained a faithful son and became a great scholar. He later went on to avenge his father after the latter lost a philosophical debate, challenging (and defeating) the man who had bested his father. The father then blessed Astavakra and the boy’s deformity vanished.
Astavakrasana (Eight-Angle Pose):
Asta = eight
Vakra = bent, curved
Benefits (according to Yoga Journal):
· Strengthens the wrists and arms
· Tones the abdominal muscles
Cautions/Contraindications:
· Wrist, elbow, or shoulder injuries
Preparatory Poses:
· Uttanasana (Standing Forward Fold)
· Utthita Parsvakonasana (Extended Side-Angle Pose, placing the lower arm to the inside of the front leg)
· Marichyasana I (Marichi’s Pose)
· Paripurna & Ardha Navasana (Full & Half Boat Pose)
· Chaturanga Dandasana (Four-Limbed Staff Pose)
· Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Downward-Facing Tree Pose, aka Handstand)
· Eka Hasta Bhujasana (Elephant’s Trunk Pose)
· Lolasana (Pendant Pose)
Song that Most Comes to Mind While in the Posture:
Jake Owen’s “Eight-Second Ride”

Team Player of the month: Emily Rasowsky

Emily found her way to tranquil space as a way to relax from tests, papers and the craziness (oftentimes just stress) of school. When she moved out to DC, just over 2 years ago, one of her top priorities was to find some great yoga classes to mellow her out; however, when she walked into tranquil space she didn't find just that. A few sprays of lavender later she was hooked on TS, not only because of the extremely seasoned teachers, creative sequences and inspirational readings but also the welcoming and accepting cOMmunity of yogis that seemed to join her for each cup of tea.
She is thankful for being so welcome in the Tranquil Space community and is excited to continue to be a part of the Tranquil Space team! Don't be shy-feel free to say hello next time you see her at the the front desk or in down dog!

Yogi of the month: Natalie Hanson

I can still picture my first class at Tranquil Space very distinctly -- 2002, in the church on 16th Street, with Siobhan. I am forever thankful to my friend, Geneva (former yogi of the month herself), for encouraging me to join her that evening. Since that day some 9 years ago, I've followed the studio over to P Street, to 17th Street (where the church can be seen from the Sky Studio windows), and the Arlington studios. I've actually never been to any other yoga studio.
Having always been active as a child and young adult -- ballet, tennis, running, basketball (i.e. a sport for every season + dance), I found I had slipped into a very sedentary lifestyle consumed by the daily grind and work, work, work. Truthfully, my goal for that first class was simply to touch my toes again. The physical flexibility was relatively easy to recapture; turning off the ever-present to-do lists continues to be a challenge, but I've learned just how important it is to take a break from time to time and do what you can to find some enjoyment in your day. TS is an important part of my personal "circle of wellness."
For the many warm, wonderful TS teachers whose classes I have enjoyed -- Siobhan, Kimberly, Anne, Kevin, Dibora, Carol, Alison, Colleen, Mary Catherine, Todd, Jodi, Jen, Dave, Pari, and the now departed Gina and Peg -- thank you! I am particularly fond of yin classes and want to give a particular shout out to Danielle for her fantastic ability to talk us all through the pain of those 5 minutes holds.
After many years of watching them go by, this year I was thrilled to find my schedule allowed me to join two TS retreats, Puerto Rico in February and Costa Rica last month. I had an awesome time! The relaxation that comes from truly getting away, not planning the day (there is not really time when you have yoga twice a day, and 3 fantastic meals that you do not have to any menu planning, prep or cooking for), being good and physically tired, and getting back to nature (Costa Rica was a tent for me) cannot be overrated. I bit of sunshine and poolside lounging was thrown in just for good measure. I was fortunate that the 21-day challenge was timed just before Costa Rica to help me be ready.
Maybe one day I'll try out that teacher training... or maybe I should try out a few more retreats :)
Namaste
