August Musings a la Kimberly

rainer cherries in vintage thrift store bowl

"The little things? The little moments? They aren't little." - John Zabat-Zinn

Welcome to August. Rainer cherries are in season (and delish). Barefoot time at the beach restores. Iced green tea is a must. Legs up the wall calms and child's pose cools. Simple pleasure make a big difference.

Over the past week I finished summer school, taught a 3-hour art journaling workshop, hosted Benefit for the Animals, and set up vintage/reclaimed goodies in our boutique. This week involves helping launch our first ever teacher training in Arlington, taking a group of ladies from N Street Village to a sewing lounge, and hosting a trunk show and chair yoga extravaganza at the Phillip's Collection before dashing off on Friday for a few weeks of creative immersion.

Ever since friend and former Tranquil Space yogi Amanda Hirsch tweeted about a dream to run away and live a bohemian lifestyle sans obligations, I've been smitten. Don't get me wrong, I'm in love with life and those who inhabit it. However, some days the circus (and bohemia) appeals. Sure I'd grow frustrated with the experience after a few days of freedom from my current daily to-dos plus those super snug sequined outfits (and lord knows I wouldn't be impressed with the treatment of the animals - that's a whole separate blog post), but there is something beckoning an escape. Probably has to do with the fact that I've been in school non-stop since fall 2010 semester, but who's counting?

Sometimes we just have to shake things up and take time to bask in the simple pleasures of life. So, shaking things up in August I am indeed. It's the perfect month for doing so! Below are my plans through Labor day weekend. My hope is to refill the well on many levels: from professional development to creative fulfillment. Never fear, you will be taken with me on all the experiences as I'll be sharing tales, photos, and insights while donning a Tranquil Space tee via my blog

August 5-12 writing, yogaing, dreaming, vintage/reclaimed shopping in New York City
August 13 hOMe, yoga + embroidery class
August 14-19 learning heaps at Disney leadership institute
August 20 hOMe, yoga + embroidery class
August 21-26 writing in West Virgina
August 27 hOMe, yoga + embroidery class
August 28-September 2 teaching at Kripalu
September 3-5 animal care conference at Farm Sanctuary
September 6 hOMe + back to school

Anyone else dreaming of joining the circus or the land of bohemia? I think it's that time of the year! Stepping away from the day to day grind serves up an opportunity to reconnect with creative whispers and open space. It's truly the most therapeutic tool imaginable. And when blended with yoga and a splash of meditation - truly transformative. Can't get away? Try a staycation or retreat to a park nearby. Your soul will thank you. May August bring you simple moments of great pleasure (and a big bowl of succulent rainer cherries).

Namaste,
Kimberly

Tranquil Space Hosts Global Yoga Class

In how many languages can you say “downward facing dog?”

At least twenty, when on Tuesday the studio hosted members of an international public health leadership program.  Participants— from countries including Haiti, Iraq, India, Nigeria, and Serbia— ended a day of lectures with stretching and relaxation. For many, this was their first experience with yoga.

Studio teacher Melissa Van Orman introduced the group to simple breathing exercises, cat cow stretches, hip openers, and of course down dog.  Prior to practicing, the group discussed the benefits of yoga and the scientific case for making relaxation and exercise part of a healthy lifestyle.

And this group knows a lot about healthy lifestyles.

The exchange program, sponsored by the State Department and Meridian International Center, is designed for distinguished medical experts.  The participants included doctors, national directors of public health, and medical journalists.  They will be in U.S. for three weeks visiting federal public health programs as well as learning about regional issues, such as rural health in Kentucky or HIV/AIDS prevention in New Orleans.

The studio was honored to add a little extra tranquility to their trip and wishes them happy travels!

Traveling with Tranquil Space...

This summer, Tranquil Space has been quite the globetrotter! Check out some of the most recent places that we've been taken by our fabulous yogis...

TS yogini Miriam Miller rocking her TS tee in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Note from the lovely Miriam: I'm posing with the resort's resident iguana, who I made friends with during our trip! Like me, iguanas are vegetarians and very friendly :)

TS team Member Kate Maloney brought her TS water bottle all the way to the Grand Canyon...yay for staying hydrated with Tranquil Space, Kate!

TS team member Missy Lane wearing her TS tee on "The Audacity of Hope," a ship hoping to make it all the way to Gaza...

One of our younger yogis, Jasper Allen (son of Prenatal and Baby + Me student Stuart Allen) wearing his TS onesie at 8-weeks old. ADORABLE.

Where will we go next? Take your TS gear on your upcoming adventures and be sure to share with us at info@tranquilspace.com. Happy travels!

You're Invited: Benefit for the Animals THIS Friday

I'm over the moon about Friday's event and wanted to share the story behind it. Tranquil Space has been a supporter of Farm Sanctuary ever since I learned about their amazing work in my 2007 Jivamukti teacher training. Last December I found out that 2011 was their 25th year anniversary (woo-hoo!) and that Gene Baur, the founder, was doing a big tour for it. A light bulb went off and I began concocting an event. I reached out to another organization we work with a lot, Washington Humane Society, and requested they get involved, share information on their Humane Education program (where we tend to send the majority of our donations), and bring animals for adoption (yes, we'll have cats and dogs at the event)! Finally, after joining the Board of Pigs Animal Sanctuary (and stalking Walter the Pig for the past 10 months), I invited them to be involved, too.

The 2-hours will involve mingling off the mat with fellow Tranquil Space yogis, a presentation by Gene on everyday activism, a presentation by WHS Humane Educator, a booksiging of Gene's Farm Sanctuary book, yummy local vegan food by Sticky Fingers and Cafe Green, and animals available for adoption.

To gain more insight into Gene, here's a snippet of his recent interview on Martha Stewart.

AGENDA
7:00pm-7:15pm: Meet and Greet
7:15pm-7:45pm: Welcome and Farm Sanctuary presentation
7:45pm-8:00pm: Q+A followed by Farm Sanctuary book signing
8:00pm-8:10pm: Washington Humane Society presentation
8:10pm-8:20pm: Pigs Animal Sanctuary presentation
8:20pm-8:30pm: Q+A
8:30pm-9:00pm: Mingle off the Mat

Please join us for this special event in honor of 4-legged beings. All animal lovers welcOMe. Namaste.

Join the Citizen Effect Yoga Challenge

Tranquil Space is excited to be a sponsoring yoga studio for this year's Yoga Challenge organized by Citizen Effect and benefiting Becky's Fund.

Last year, Citizen Effect challenged the DC community to do 30 days of yoga and raised over $11,000 to build a foster home in South Africa. This year, Citizen Effect is partnering with the DC-based non-profit organization Becky’s Fund to present the 2nd annual Yoga Challenge and raise money to help Becky’s Fund end domestic violence.

How does it work? By signing up, you commit to raise $250 for Becky’s Fund by taking discounted yoga classes at participating local studios through the month of August and getting your friends and family to pledge money. The more classes you take, the more money you raise, and the more impact you have! Top fundraisers will also receive prizes from our sponsors at the end of the Challenge.

See below for a full press release detailing the Yoga Challenge:

Citizen Effect and Becky's Fund Team Up for Second Annual Yoga Challenge

Washington, DC — This summer, Citizen Effect is launching its 2nd Annual Yoga Challenge and uniting the DC yoga community to benefit Becky’s Fund, a Washington, DC-based non-profit that focuses on domestic and dating violence education and awareness.

Everyone—from those trying yoga for the first time to experienced yogis—is encouraged to do #Yoga4Good. Participants will receive discounts from local yoga studios while joining together to raise $20,000 for Becky’s Fund. Those interested in doing #Yoga4Good can go to http://citizeneffect.org/yogachallenge to sign up. The official Challenge and studio benefits will start on August 1st and last through the end of the month, with top fundraisers receiving prizes at the end of the challenge. There will also be four (4) Yoga in the Park events, starting July 20th and occurring every other Wednesday through August. Currently underway is Citizen Effect’s “Show Us Your #Yoga4Good Pose” photo contest on Facebook. To participate, yoga lovers can take a picture of themselves doing a yoga pose while displaying the Yoga Challenge hashtag, #Yoga4Good, then post it to Citizen Effect’s “Show Us Your #Yoga4Good Pose” Facebook page. The person with the most “likes” on their photo will receive a 3-month supply of Vita Coco Coconut Water.

Yoga’s focus on healthy, happy living makes it the perfect fundraiser for the Becky’s Fund youth initiatives: “Becoming Your Own Heroine: Lessons in Self-Empowerment and Dating Violence” and the “Young Men’s Mentorship Program,” which educate DC/Metro area youth about dating and domestic violence.

Challenge yourself to do #Yoga4Good today at http://citizeneffect.org/yogachallenge.

Citizen Effect is a Washington, DC-based entrepreneurial 501©(3) nonprofit that provides citizens with the tools and support they need to complete a small but critical philanthropic project. Learn more at http://citizeneffect.org.

New Snacks and Drink Offerings

Looking for a healthy snack option before or after class? Stop by the tea bar area and browse our basket of goodies courtesy of our new friends at B Kind Vending. Try the nutty and wonderful Omega-3 mix. Or if sweet is more your speed, you can grab a bag of the organic fruit snacks. Do you like a bar crammed with flavor and a little pick me up before class? Chow down on one of the delicious Kind bar. If you want to know what the staff recommends, we highly suggest the Yogavive apple chips. Duuuude, they are so good!

Tis the season for hot and humid weather and the need to stay cool. How about staying cool and giving back? You can do so by purchasing a Tevolution tea. These teas were created by local guy Ian Simpson. He's passionate about helping others. With each purchase, 25 cents goes to one of four charities. All you have to do is peel back the label and text the code or enter the code on Tevolution's website. Choose from four delicious flavors, white tea with peach, black tea with lemon, green tea with lemon and white tea with mango.

TSA Facade "Makeover"

If you've been to our Arlington studio recently, you've probably noticed a number of big changes taking place on the outside of the studio. The one we're most excited about is our recent studio "makeover," including a newly-landscaped front yard and a new fresh new paint job. We're excited to show it off and hope you're as pleased with our new look as we are!

Another big change at TSA? The building next door was finally taken down last Friday (a BIG thanks to all who were in the noon class and kept practicing through what sounded like an earthquake...nothing like a building going down next door to remind us to stay present and turn inward during our practice, huh?!). We understand that the empty space next door is being turned into a park, and look forward to offering special outdoor yoga classes once it's complete :)

Thanks so much for being a part of our Arlington cOMmunity as we change and grow. Happy Yogi Appreciation Week!

Follow Your Breath

As a massage therapist and registered nurse, I am often asked about my thoughts on healthy lifestyle changes. Like many in health professions, I promote balanced nutrition and regular exercise and try to lead by example in my personal life. One of the most overlooked practices in the traditional western medical model that I believe also promotes good health in the physical, emotional and spiritual realms is the use of time tested breathing techniques.

I became most aware of the power of the breath when I added both massage therapy and yoga into my life. When I am in a massage session, I am in tune with my own breathing as well as the rhythm of the client in front of me. Sometimes I encourage people on my table to be aware of their breath and to breathe in to the work while receiving. And those who have studied yoga are well aware of the attention paid to the breath as an integral part of the practice.

In my more recent studies in integrative health practices I have become aware of breathing as a part of our body’s innate healing system, and that when restricted, can lead to dysfunction and disease. We can reverse this process by practicing breathing techniques consciously and regularly. Research has demonstrated some powerful evidence towards the far reaching benefits of breath work in the realms of pain management, heart disease, asthma, menopause, sleep disruption, concentration and digestive challenges to name a few. Many have also found it helpful in managing anxiety, anger and stress. And while I am in no way advocating for the replacement of allopathic medicine, breathing techniques can’t be beat in terms of cost effectiveness (it’s free!) and lack of side effects when it can supplement or substitute for the sometimes toxic drugs used in treatments.

Many of the breathing techniques in use today can be traced back to an ancient Indian science known as pranayama, which can be studied here at Tranquil Space. I would encourage anyone interested in learning more about the power of breath work and receive guidance from a person trained in this work. There are also some simple techniques that one can use to get started and they take only a few minutes a day.

If breath work is new to you, you will want to start slowly, allowing for your muscles to get used to it gradually. Though it will take time to notice results, most important is not the amount of time you spend, but the daily routine; this is how patterns are changed in the nervous system. It is also important to note that you should breathe from the belly rather than the chest to maximize the use of your respiratory system and delivery of oxygen. Here is one simple exercise I use when I start my day and also as a stress release:

  1. Sit in a comfortable position with your eyes closed and back straight. Loosen any tight clothing.
  2. Place one hand on your belly and one on your heart; your hand should move out as you inhale and in as you exhale. (otherwise you are breathing from your chest)
  3. Focus your attention on your breathing without trying to influence it in any way.
  4. Follow the contours of the breath cycle through inhalation and exhalation, and see if you can perceive the points at which one phase changes into the other.
  5. Start with a few minutes each day and increase as desired.

Scenes from Costa Rica Retreat

Hola from Costa Rica.

Yesterday I snapped these photos while walking around the retreat property with my trusty iPhone. It was my artist date among a week of artist dates: savoring fresh fruit, sipping papaya juice, teaching and taking 2-4 hours of yoga daily, napping, reading, and tons of writing. Taking a moment to hit the reset button is a critical step in ongoing tranquility.

Q: What is an artist date?
A: A weekly, solo adventure to reconnect with your creative spirit coined in the work of Creativity Genius Julia Cameron. My favorite ways to indulge in an artist date include bookstore browsing, art journaling, decorating, shop browsing, soaks in the tub, time on my yoga mat, sipping tea, sitting in a cafe, meditation, visiting museums, browsing art galleries, walking through city streets, taking a workshop or retreat, snapping photos, and indulging in matinees (preferably documentaries).

How do *you* like to replenish your creative spirit? Wishing you a beautiful start to your weekend from this tropical feast for the senses.

P.S. Don't forget to share a tranquil tip and enter to win a yummy care package from Costa Rica

Besos,
Kimberly

Postpartum Massage: Taking Care of Mom

Having a newborn is an exciting time. Everyone is focused on trying to figure out how to take care of this precious new life. Parents are getting to know the difference between a cry that means the baby is hungry or there is a wet diaper.

What about mom? Her body heroically delivered this 7 or 8+ pound baby. She may have been walking, swaying, squatting and pushing for hours. Her muscles may be feeling sore and fatigued from the birthing process. She may be feeling overwhelmed by the experience of labor and the stress of caring for her baby. Her shoulders, neck, and back can be aching as she tries to find the best positions for feeding. She needs some attention and some healing. Postpartum massage is one very important way to help her physically and emotionally recuperate.

At Tranquil Space I see a lot of moms for prenatal massage and an almost equal number of moms for postpartum. I have seen moms who are suffering from lower back pain as a result of pushing, whose abdominal, back and leg muscles are sore from long labors, whose necks and shoulders are knotted up from awkward positions from breastfeeding and moms who are just experiencing the baby blues and need some emotional support. I also see moms who are healing from a C-section (once they have been cleared by their doctors which is usually 6 weeks after the operation) to prevent adhesions from forming at the scar.

As a childbirth educator, I try to advise new moms to take care of themselves, to drink and eat and rest whenever they can. Being a new mom is one of the most challenging endeavors one will undertake and one of the most rewarding.
