Yogi of the Month July: Jessie Hrivnak

For several years I had been going to yoga classes. I had explored different teachers and different styles but it wasn't until I found Tranquil Space in the spring of 2010 that I realized that I hadn't been practicing yoga, I had simply been going to a fitness class that moved through some cool poses and provided some nice muscle definition and got me into my skinny jeans.

I found TS shortly after I moved to Washington, D.C. from Raleigh, North Carolina. It was a difficult transition for me, moving away from family and friends, working from home, not knowing many people or much about the city I now called home (notably how to get around traffic circles. That in and of itself was a life changing experience), I felt compelled to seek out a yoga studio so that I could begin a practice, find a community, and really just get myself out of my house on those days that the fabulousness of working from home is lost due to loneliness or when you finally realize that your sweatpants are your new staple wardrobe piece and conversations with your dog are happening way too often. A sweet friend of mine recommending TS and I joined her for a Saturday morning class and I knew, as the end of class lavender spray circled the room, that I would be back again and again.

My personal practice has changed my life in ways that only few other things have. You often hear from those who practice that yoga has been life changing. In a very transparent and honest way, I share with you just how much a dedicated practice can alter your very being. My hope is that this encourages my fellow yogi's to reflect on how the journey from the mat and out into your daily life has changed you. For those who are tip toeing into the idea of starting a yoga practice, my hope is that this opens your heart to the idea that while your arms will strengthen and your booty will look good, the true transformation will be within and it will be amazing.
Yoga taught me to rip the cover off of books (metaphorically speaking of course). Judging a book by its cover became a waste of time. Where I once would create opinions and judgements on others based on superficial matters, I found myself seeking a deeper discovery into both current and new relationships. I wanted to better understand their uniqueness, passion, and energy. This has lead to beautiful integrity based relationships. Friendships become about giving, trusting and a selfless love that goes beyond a good Saturday night out (although those are still important!)

Dealing with conflict had always been a challenge for me. I grew up with 5 older brothers so from a very young age I worked hard to make sure my voice was heard and then heard again. And in the event that you didn't hear it the first 18 times, I wrote it down for you! Reflecting on times of conflict that I've faced, I recognize that it was more about the win, the control, and the final say than it was about truth and understanding. Taking the advice of the musical genius John Lennon and being able to just "Let it be" is an amazing discovery. Know what is worth taking a stance for, spend your fight on things worth fighting for, and embrace that what makes all of us so amazing is that we have this freedom to be different from each other yet still share the same space and love each other for those very differences.

Yoga has provided the ability to recognize that sometimes a fresh perspective is all you need. When I was working on headstand earlier this year, I began to have cervical spine and neck issues. I was totally bummed and found myself pouting about it. Then the cake got iced with headstand being the asana of the month. The pose I so craved, was in front of me for 30 days and I couldn't do it. I couldn't even try to do it. In my frustration, Mary Catherine, a teacher at the Arlington studio, reminded me to look at the life lesson in front of me. Perhaps the journey wasn't about the pose, but maybe it was about humility, self-care, and just being ok with not being able to do it all. It's just a pose.

Finally, and what I feel has been the most amazing transformation of all, is the idea of self-compassion. Yoga has taught me the beautiful idea of recognizing that right now, just as I am, is enough. That with kind thoughts, words, and intentions to others, I can develop the same compassion towards my own self. It has taught me that there is no room on my mat or in a studio to try and be better than your fellow yogi; you're practice is not the same therefor there is no way to compare the two. My practice has taught me that not only is falling ok, but that sometimes the fall is the most beautiful experience you can have. Fall. Feel the earth catch you. See the hand extend to help you up. Recognize your inner strength to dust yourself off and go right back into trying the same pose. Your fear of not being total perfection is gone. Yoga has taught me that the journey is often just that, a journey. The destination may not be known so don't worry about where you are going and focus on where you are in the present moment. Eddie Vedder, says it so simply, "It makes much more sense to live in the present tense."

I am truly grateful to Tranquil Space for being my home away from home. I have grateful for my teachers who have pushed me to my edge and pulled me back when they recognize I was pushing myself past it. I am so thankful for the friends that I have made on the mat for honoring the studios vision of love and compassion. To my recent TT1 classmates, I am grateful to have shared a great experience of knowledge, self discovery, and growth with all of you. I am thankful to Kimberly, for her creativity, friendship, and mentorship. I am so humbled that my own personal journey has stood out to the TS community. It's my hope that I can continue to share my energy with each of you on and off the mat.

My t-shirt says it perfectly! I love Tranquil Space!

I honor the light in all of you, and thank you for honoring the light in me. Namaste.

Asana of the Month: Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana (Half-Bound Lotus Seated Forward Bend)

Each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

As we move more fully into the heat of summer—the most Yang time of the year—a practice that focuses on forward-folds can help soothe the brain and create a cooling sensation in mind and body, while simultaneously stimulating the digestive system and toning the abdominal organs. After a long hot summer day, few things are as refreshing as a cooling glass of lemonade, and the calming, rejuvenating effects of Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana.

Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana (Half-Bound Lotus Seated Forward Bend):
Ardha = half
Baddha = bound
Padma = lotus
Pashima = west
Uttana = intense stretch
[paschimottana = intense stretch of the west]

Benefits (according to Light on Yoga & yogajournal.com):
  • increases flexibility in the knees
  • Stretches the spine, shoulders, hamstrings
  • Stimulates the liver, kidneys, ovaries, and uterus
  • Improves digestion
Cautions/Contraindications:
  • knee or ankle injury
  • hamstring injury
  • may be contraindicated for certain individuals with back pain
Preparatory Poses:
Uttanasana
Supta Padangustasana
Janu Sirsasana
Paschimottanasana
Virasana

Song that Most Comes to Mind While in the Posture:
The slightly catchy, slightly annoying (in your inability to get it out of your head once you hear it) Boy Scout song: "Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes" [Listen here, and beware!]

Teacher Feature: Carol Collins

I'm home sick today with laryngitis for the second time this year. My body is telling me something. I want more in my life right now, but what exactly that is I realize I'm not ready to say. I'm meeting with a Life Coach later this summer. Maybe something will click. Anyway I think that's why I keep literally losing my voice. I connect with something internally that feels right, but I can't seem to bring it out into my world. I can't voice it.

The fifth chakra has always been a place of stuck energy for me. When I began teaching yoga I felt like I was beginning to find my voice. What does that mean? I was connecting with what I really wanted in my life at that time: more down time, less stress, to be a mom, flexibility, the power to make my own daily schedule and to be my own boss. But it was more than just connecting with my dreams, it was voicing them. I remember telling Kimberly that I wanted to take her teacher training. I remember my first 12:00 Monday yoga class at the church with Kevin as my only student. (Thank God it was Kevin - it could have been much more awkward?) Most of my ideas came together for me. I put a lot of time and effort into it. I took what was on the inside and revealed it. I wasn't swallowing down what I wanted. I didn't get laryngitis for years.

Today I'll drink lots of lemon and honey tea. I bought some sage and something or other lozenge. Later I'll try some shoulder stands, bridge pose and fish and lion's breathe. See if I can find my voice again.

Team Player of the Month: Kate Maloney

Kate came to Tranquil Space sure she was going to be a restorative-only kinda yogi feeling way too intimidated to take a "real" yoga class. A healthy dose of lavendar aromatherapy spray and a few downward dogs later, she can hardly keep herself away from the studio and just completed her first 21-day challenge. She credits the warm and encouraging community at Tranquil Space for curing her yoga-phobia. "Go 'asana-fy' yourself" is now one of her boyfriend's favorite phrases when she gets a little frazzled and she is happy to oblige.
Moving to DC just over a year ago to continue the mental health awareness work she began in college with Active Minds, her yoga studio is her favorite thing about her new city and uses her practice as a way to take care of her own mental health while empowering young people to do the same.

Summer Sparkle

Summer is in full swing and the boutique has some new items to make you shine. Allison Bernstein is a local jewelry maker who stopped in to see if I'd be interested in carrying her handcrafted earrings. Using wire as her medium, she's made fun earrings that are the perfect summer accessory.

Read more about Allison below:

"I've been turning figdety fingers into fine jewelry (or at least friendship bracelets) since age 8 or so. With my Aunt Bev, I began working with wire and beads more seriously in college, and recently ended up with more jewelry than friends with upcoming birthdays. So, enjoy your new earrings and wear Twenty-six gauge in good health! "

One of our yogis, Carol Meyers, has already made herself known in our space with her glass mala necklaces. She's now added bracelets to her line. These bracelets use colorful glass beads and crystals with either an om or fleur-de-lis charm.

Be on the lookout for our custom water bottles by Earthlust has shipped. Look for the branded bottles to hit the shelves soon. Below is a sneak peek.

July Muse: Happy Half-Year

"The unexamined life is not worth living, but the unlived life is not worth examining." Julia Cameron

Birthday balloons. Mid-year. Summer solstice. Welcome to July. It's a special time of the year. For me, it's my 38th birthday. J'adore birthdays - all week I've squealed, "did you know Thursday is my birthday?" Poor management team! Each birthday I like to list my accomplishments since June 30, 2010 and my dreams for June 30, 2012. A colleague sent me this idea via e-mail about six years ago and the concept has stuck. It's a perfect way to spend a few hours over a pot of Morrocan mint tea at Teaism.

Although it may not be an actual birthday for you, it IS the half-way mark for 2011. Take a moment to review what your 2011 dreams were - lose 5 lbs, daily yoga, kindness toward mother-in-law, meditation practice, pet adoption. How are these unfolding? How are you feeling as a whole? What are you reading? How are you spending your time? How is this contributing to your overall happiness? List 5-10 fabulous things that have transpired for you this year. List 5-10 things you'd like to see transpire by December 31, 2011. Share them here if you're so inclined. Studies show we're more apt to do things when we write them down and even more likely to do them when we share them!

A few fabulous things that have transpired for me include: N Street Village internship, joining Pigs Animal Sanctuary board, adding vintage/reclaimed items to TranquiliT, adding great members to our team, successful Tranquil Space Foundation LunaFest film festival, raising $1000 for India at India Night, scheduling Art + Yoga retreat in Paris + Provence. A few things I'd love to see transpire include: launch new e-course and e-book, new Tranquil Space Foundation website, successful Benefit for the Animals, inspiring team retreat, learn heaps at Disney Leadership Institute, win Pepsi Refresh grant for Tranquil Space Foundation.

Today I was blessed to attend the N Street Village annual luncheon where the former editor of Essence magazine spoke about giving back, connecting to our core, and loving ourselves first. She was eloquent, on point, and shared heaps of fodder for deep thoughts. Taking the time to connect within (a foundational step within yoga) allows us to better serve others - our families and communities. As a social work graduate student interested in social justice and macro change, it's inspiring to see how the small changes we make within can contribute to the greater whole. For example, consider baking cookies for your office, complimenting a colleague, bringing flowers to your beloved just because, penning a snail mail note, volunteering, or making the perfect gift for a friend. These simple gestures can have profound effects and they take such little effort on our part.

As a yogini and entrepreneur obsessed with creativity, I am constantly looking for ways to blossom my practice and my small businesses into their most fabulous selves. As a teacher, I encourage you, too, to explore what that would look like. One of my favorite Buddhist teachers reminds us that we are perfect as we are, we just need a little work. Agreed 100%. You are beautiful. Embrace eccentricities. Throw caution to the wind (from time to time). Let your light shine. And continually reevaluate where you are and where you want to go. Don't let life happen to you.

Wishing you a glorious second half of 2011. May you shine brightly. May your practice of yoga transform who you are and what you bring to the world. As my favorite mantra (recently tattooed on the inside of my arm) states: may all beings be happy and free, may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all. The perfect summary of a life well-lived AND well-examined.

Tranquilly yours,

Take time to treat yourself. The Spa at Tranquil Space awaits.

Have you been considering a spa treatment to ease any body aches or just for a little self-care? Amy Detgen is here to help demystify a few of our most common spa treatments.

I became interested in massage through being fascinated by the mind-body connection and wanting to help others find relaxation from busy, hectic lives. My goal is to work with each client to determine what they’re looking for in a session and then to draw on my training to provide that.

I’m a licensed and nationally certified massage therapist and was trained in Swedish and deep tissue massage at the Potomac Massage Training Institute.

  • Swedish massage involves slow, soothing strokes that improve circulation and help promote relaxation.
  • Deep tissue massage is wonderful for any muscle tightness or knots. I work slowly with the muscle tissue to help alleviate soreness and repair injuries.

Since graduating, I have been trained in Reiki.

  • Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is performed with the client fully clothed and involves hand placements on or over specific points on the body.

I also love to work with pregnant women and am a certified Nurturing the Mother Pregnancy Massage therapist.

  • Prenatal massage can give women the much-needed rest and care that their bodies need and can help alleviate discomfort such as lower back tightness or swelling.

No matter the modality, massage is restorative, calming and beneficial for body and mind. A perfect complement to a yoga practice or just busy, everyday life.

Amy Detgen is on the Spa at Tranquil Space schedule every Sunday from 10:00am-2:00pm. Call the studio or check availability online to book your appointment today.

The online system is down, but the up dogs are still up

Our online system seems to be sleeping in this dreary Sunday morning, but our classes are still perky as usual. All classes are on as scheduled today, but if you can't recall the specific times of your favorite classes, give us a call. Please try to arrive a little earlier to class so we can get everyone signed in, and we'll be running purchases as cash and checks preferred. Online schedule down

Our online schedule provider, MINDBODY is working on the fix. Not sure if we should feel better or worse to know this, but the impact is apparently global. Please feel free to drop in tonight for your usual classes - we will be open at both studios. If you do not have an active pass, please consider bringing cash as our credit card servers may not be running. Sorry for the inconvenience!

UPDATE 11pm: MINDBODY informs us the issue is nearly resolved. We have access to the system at the studio, so credit card service has been restored. Unfortunately, access to the schedule on your end may not return until Friday morning. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience!

UPDATE 5:30pm: The system was functioning for a brief period of time and is unresponsive once again. We want to apologize for any confusion/frustration this might be causing you. MINDBODY has been reassuring us that there's a fix in the works, but at this time we don't have a concrete time frame to pass along. Please be patient with us and bring cash if at all possible. We'll let you know when everything is back up and running. Thanks for understanding!

Exciting Things to Come...

Let me set the stage:
  • one hot and steamy morning at Teaism
  • too many glasses of Moroccan mint green tea to count
  • six ginger scones
  • unveiling of freshly acquired "I heart Perks" tees from NYC travels
  • four hours of brainstorming between Mary Catherine, Sara, Tim + Kimberly
  •
Take a peek at some of the fun and exciting changes starting July 1:

  • No expiration dates on class passes.
  • We're unveiling a rewards program. Earn points for taking yoga classes, making purchases in the boutique, enjoying spa appointments, participating in TS-related social media and more through Perkville.
  • On-the-Go $14 classes will now be available to purchase online.
  • Look out for an On-the-Go 10-class pass. Use this $130 pass for any of our hour-long classes.
  • More membership benefits: free towel and mat rentals PLUS exclusive events (and even a class *just* for you)!
  • The 6- and 10-class pass packages will be available on an auto-renew schedule so you won't even have to think about how many classes you have remaining.
  • Membership purchase now online. As much as we would like you to sign up in person so that we can get excited with you, soon you'll be able to sign up for the $125/month unlimited yoga package online.
  • We LOVE your feedback. We've redesigned our client survey and will be rolling that out for your suggestions/comments/praises/etc. Plus, you can always share input online from the comfort of your own hOMe via mytranquilspaceidea.com.

We'll be elaborating on all of these items as everything gets put into motion this month. Keep an eye on the blog for details. We hope you are as excited as we are about our ongoing evolution to bring you more and more tranquility. Thank you for your support of our cOMmunity. Namaste.

Get in touch with your creative side

We all know that yoga exercises not only your body, but your mind and spirit as well. We've got two workshops coming up in June that will help to increase the flexibility in your mind and expand your creative side. Beginners to yoga and the creative arts are welcome!

Yoga and Poetry on Sunday, June 19 from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Join Mary Catherine for an afternoon of exploration, practice, and creativity, as we discover the ways in which yoga awakens the poetic side of our beings. This workshop will focus on using poetry as a therapeutic tool for delving deeper into one's practice, emotions, state of mind, and desires. We will open with a practice meant to awake and inspire, focusing on opening the body and mind for creativity. Practice will be followed with time to write individual yoga-inspired poetry. Join the workshop for just $30 if you sign up online. Bring a journal, something to write with and an open mind.

Yoga and Knitting on Sunday, June 26 from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Through yoga and through knitting, we learn about connection. In yoga, we connect movement to breath and body parts to each other. In knitting, we weave the yarn together to create a piece of fabric. both processes can become very meditative and allow our minds calm down and gain clarity, while recognizing connections and patterns in our lives in a subtle and profound way.

Join Anne, an avid knitter of masterpieces since age 14, for a 2-hour workshop with a brief initial yoga practice, a knitting and chatting session and a concluding yoga practice to relieve knitting-sore muscles. Please bring yarn and needles. Join this workshop for just $25 by signing up online.
