Yogi of the month: Lizzie Kountze

I feel so fortunate to be part of the Tranquil Space community. In a city full of career-driven people who are often transient, building a community itself is truly something special. Tranquil Space teachers set a tone that welcomes students to challenge themselves and be authentic.

As a grad student three years ago, a friend brought me to the studio for a study break. Later that year, when a stressful job overwhelmed me, the Tranquil Space studios in DC and Bethesda became my outlet. I was amazingly curious about the mystery of yoga, what it was doing to my body and mind. I endlessly Googled "effects of yoga" but never felt satisfied with the answers I got, only starting to realize that the best answers would only come from within.

Last fall, a friend and I participated in the Yoga and Nature Shenandoah trip - a combination of two of my absolute favorite things. The other people on the trip were bright, inspiring, and thoughtful, the kind of people I wanted to get to know better. A few months later I joined Teacher Training and was immersed with bright teachers, participants and mentors-- I thought, not only is this a place that I am encouraged to explore something I love, but I am surrounded by supportive, fun, and brilliant people- with fascinating day jobs and a wide range of life experience-- who bring so much to the practice of teaching. In addition to the instruction, Teacher Training includes fascinating reading full of yoga philosophy, anatomy, and wisdom for living your yoga. It also includes Karma Yoga requirements that are fantastic because they push new teachers to take their practice off the mat by teaching or volunteering with underserved people. I'll be finishing up TT200 requirements this fall and I'm thankful to let it all sink in over the summer. I am thrilled to have a yoga home in Tranquil Space and to grow as a teacher and student.

Teacher Feature: Laura Burch

Lately I've been thinking a lot about whether quitting fits in with yoga philosophy. Perhaps you've heard a yoga teacher speak about the path of yoga as a process of peeling off layer upon layer until we reach the very essence of our true selves*. Isn't this peeling process another way of saying quitting those things that don't feel like a genuine, energizing part of yourself? Our capitalist country just happens to carry around some negative connotations with the word quit, as it's not often that the bio of a successful CEO reads, "quits under pressure," or an online dating profile entices with, "I quit before getting emotionally invested." However honest any of those statements might be. But perhaps I could be more sensitive in using this word, q--t.

In the past two years, I went on a q--tting spree, releasing some very foundational elements of my life (long-time job, relationship, graduate school plans, even mailing address and cell phone), yet it wasn't without fear that I did so. The very word q--t once spilled convulsive tears at age 24. My soon-to-be-former manager eyed me curiously, lacking the words to assure that q--tting this, a first job, was such a natural event in one's life. Somehow I felt like I was letting someone down. Why are we so opposed to just letting go of things, no matter how draining or untrue they feel? Four years later, when I decided to q--t job number two, it was much easier, even somewhat thrilling, if not quite cachet because of the financial crisis and all. I've realized recently that q--tting is not even a word I have to avoid typing.

Maybe we can put quitting in springtime terms, find a way to liken it to a spring molting, shedding, or cleaning, as we often do this time of year. And perhaps this year, instead of examining those spawning piles of murk in the attic, let the dust mites lie, take off the latex gloves and set down the disinfectant. Let's think for a moment about what we can shed beyond these physical things weaving garlands around our homes, leaving sink spots in the rugs and constricting our physical spaces. What other elements, thoughts, influences, activities, are simply distortions that we can quit to be more free?

I welcome your stories of past quits or intended quits in comments below!

Spring hugs and shrugs,
Laura

*Okay, this is really more of a Buddhist perspective, but western yoga philosophy is enmeshed with a variety of eastern sources.

Team Player of the month: Patricia Cervini

I began my Tranquil Space team journey when the Arlington location opened in September 2008. I had practiced at the Dupont location for a few years and was thrilled to learn that a studio was opening in Arlington, where I lived. I welcomed the opportunity to volunteer as a studio assistant so I could deepen my commitment to yoga. I couldn't have imagined how much fun I would have or how much I would value my interaction with the staff, teachers, other studio assistants, members and random students. It's been an honor and a privilege to see TS Arlington grow from a handful of students competing with belly dancing music during savasana to the robust, thriving community that it is now. Here's to another fabulous three years!

Asana of the month: Lolasana (Pendant Pose)

Lolasana, too, takes work. Commitment. But also a sense of lightheartedness. Writing in Yoga Journal, Richard Rosen notes that "Lolasana is well worth trying," because not only will it "strengthen your arms, upper back, and abdominals…. you'll feel an exhilarating sense of accomplishment if you actually manage to defy gravity and take flight." "Lolasana can be discouraging," he adds, "but with diligent practice you'll develop what you need to do the pose: arm, wrist, and belly strength. Lolasana is also a valuable preparation for more advanced arm balances…. If at first you don't succeed, remember what Krishna tells Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita: On this path no effort is wasted, no gain is ever reversed."

Lolasana (Pendant Pose):

Benefits:
• Strengthens the arms, wrists, shoulders, upper back, chest, and abdomen -developing all the muscles that are recruited in the jump-back vinyasa

Cautions/Contraindications:
• Shoulder, elbow, wrist injuries

Preparatory Poses:
• Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog Pose)
• Shoulder openers such as the arm positions of Gomukhasana (Cow-Face Pose) and Garudasana (Eagle Pose)
• Plank Pose
• Vasisthasana (Pose Dedicated to the Sage Vasistha, aka Side Plank)
• Paripurna Navasana (Boat Pose)
• Bakasana (Crane Pose)
• Virasana (Hero's Pose)

Song that Most Comes to Mind While in the Posture:
Eminem's "Till I Collapse"

Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans. – John Lennon

Confession: I'm a planner. Last night I purchased my 2012 planner pad and, honestly, couldn't believe I didn't have one in hand yet. Blasphemy! Problem solved, it's en route. Yet I have to wonder, does planning prevent us from living in the moment? John Lennon seemed to think so!

As I finish up an incredibly busy 8 months filled with social work classes and 2 day/week internship on top of my beloved businesses and non-profit, I eagerly look forward to mOMents that lack planning. Ah, a respite, a little more sleep, and a lot more yoga. I've gone through my planner and carved out Friday afternoons for creative space (which, according to an article sent to me by Tranquility Concierge Cecilia, is critical) and am doing my best to not fill up the space that is opening. Yes, I must plan to not plan. Ironic? Maybe.

For the past few years, my word of the year has been "spaciousness." You know, the moments of catching your breath between meetings, appointments, day care pick ups, and yoga classes. There are many proponents of carving out white space in one's schedule to dream, slow down, and connect with your breath. I recently interviewed Tara Sophia Mahr on my podcast, Tranquility du Jour, and she shared an article on white space that I found insightful. It all comes down to mindfulness. Mindfulness in the moment, being fully present with the situation in front of you, and allowing what lies beneath the surface a chance to emerge.

As we move into the month of May, we are officially 1/3 through 2011. My spring and summer goals focus on creativity and a reconnection to spaciousness thanks to a newfound 18 hours in my week. Out of 168 hours (112 waking ones) in a week, that's pretty substantial! During last Sunday's brunch followed by a hike and afternoon drive that wasn't penned into my planner, I recognized that I needed to focus more on the mOMents in between the plans. Open space may be scary, but it is critical for creative and spiritual sprouting, and, frankly, it feels a little rebellious! And as John Lennon reminded us, life *IS* happening. Let's be fully present with it rather than fully planned.

Will you join me in this lifelong endeavor? Stay tuned here and on my blog for insights into how I'm using this newfound space. Many creative dreams are sure to take root and maybe even sprout in the white space. I look forward to savoring the journey with you on and off the yoga mat.

Namaste,
Kimberly Wilson

7 Tips of Tranquility at Tranquil Space

Spa at Tranquil Space: Reiki Focus

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use and even practice themselves if properly instructed. During a 30 minute or 1 hour treatment, a client lies comfortably on or below the sheets, wearing loose, comfortable clothing. The practitioner begins to scan the bodily "chakras" or energy centers for imbalances, and Reiki energy will start to flow to these centers to help balance, energize and revive them, creating a sense of well-being in the person; ultimately the goal is to help the person feel more balanced mentally, emotionally and physically.

Here two clients describe how they felt after several monthly sessions of Reiki:

"I am feeling very happy all the time...when people ask me how I am doing, I have answered several times: ‘I just feel very happy for no reason.’ I am more in tune with my needs and what is good for me. My ‘problems’ are still there but I barely think of them, they just feel ‘there somewhere distant’ as if I trust they will take care of themselves!" —D.B.

"This treatment has had by far the most significant effects I have experienced. I feel very grateful because I slept 10 hours and woke up with a very different outlook on life, grounded, balanced and happy!" —Beatrice

mindful mOMent

Looking for a way to deepen your yoga practice? Consider spending just as much time honing your mindfulness practice as you do on your asana practice. Keep an eye out for this new recurring TS blog column, "mindful mOMent" for tips, mantras and exercises to help focus your mind.

Along with holidays comes eating, which segues perfectly into this week's mindful mOMent.

Mindful eating: We need food to sustain life so this "need" gives us a great opportunity to be fully present many times during the day. How often do you eat breakfast on your way out the door, or grab lunch while answering emails or stop for a quick dinner on the road between evening activities? Granted, these habits get the job done--you're no longer hungry--but instead of eating just for the sake of eating, take a moment to really experience your food.
Here are four suggestions to help your eating habits become more mindful:

  1. Eat one piece at a time, whether it's one piece of pasta or one raisin. Notice how often you eat of a handful of something and don't really taste it.

  2. Pay attention as you chew. It's a subconscious activity, but make it a conscious one.

  3. Move the piece of food or beverage around in your mouth. Let the piece of chocolate (I'm encouraging you to eat chocolate, how wonderful!) completely dissolve in your mouth and notice the different sensations as it disappears.

  4. Even before taking your first bite, use your other four senses to appreciate what you're about to taste. Look at the colors intermingling on the plate, breath in the aroma of the sauces, feel the crustiness of the bread, listen to the steam or settling of the food to see if it makes any audible noises.

  5. Eat slower. This will not only help you feel full, and therefore eat less, but will allow for a more fulfilling experience in general.

Happy eating!

Swedish vs. Deep Tissue Massage

In honor of the Spa at Tranquil Space's Self Care Week, we've decided to demystify a commonly asked question: what's the difference between a Swedish and Deep Tissue massage?

Here's the simple answer:

Swedish: is given to increase the circulation of blood without actually increasing the workload of the heart. It helps to stretch the ligaments and tendons to make them pliable and supple. It stimulates the skin as well as the nervous system to soothe the nerves. It is helpful in reducing both emotional and physical stress.

Deep Tissue: is a type of massage that aims at affecting the deeper tissue structure of the muscles. It also affects the connective tissue, known as fascia. A deep tissue massage utilizes a large number of similar techniques and movements as the Swedish massage, but the movements tend to have much more pressure. The deep tissue massage is a more focused massage.

For an extended explanation, check out this great article.

Candlelight, shining bright.

"There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it." - Edith Wharton

Or you could share my excitement about candles. I am discovering I have a thing for candles. Recently boxes have been making their way into the studio and candles are populating the boutique shelves. In January, I recall being enthralled by all the scents and colorful packaging. Thinking of all of our shoppers and how excited they would be to bring these lovely lights into their homes, offices and places of comfort.

Paddywax scores again with great eco packaging and wonderful scents. The glass containers are recycled wine bottles. Scents include, pomegranate currant, rosemary citrus, mandarin and lavender and my personal favorite, thyme and olive leaf.

Sweet smells permeate the room when you light up the Tru Melange SOL glass candle. You can even reuse the container as a glass once the candle is burned. New scents include Angelic (lemon & vanilla), Embrace (lavender & ylang ylang) and Adore (rose & jasmine).

It wouldn't be spring without the smell of spring brought to us by Paddywax. The garden crush collection is back. These colorful tins will bring light to an interior space when it's not being burned and once lit the room will be filled with peony, sweet pea, poppy, jasmine and more.

Gardenia was the flower that Lady Day wore in her hair and this fragrance has been captured in a sweet 45 hour candle. Ignite it and let the essence fill your space while you enjoy a lazy spring afternoon. Let your little light shine.

mindful mOMent

Looking for a way to deepen your yoga practice? Consider spending just as much time honing your mindfulness practice as you do on your asana practice. Keep an eye out for this new recurring TS blog column, "mindful mOMent" for tips, mantras and exercises to help focus your mind.

Counting Your Breath: This week we're going to focus on using your breath to slow your mind. Sitting still and "not thinking" is not the goal of meditation. The idea is to slow the mind and let your thoughts come and go without reacting to them. By using your breath to bring your attention away from fleeting thoughts, you can more effectively manage your thoughts.

Again, start in a comfortable seated position. Find a kitchen timer or use your cell phone to set an alarm. This way, you don't have to be continually checking the time to see if your ten minutes (or whatever time you choose) is up.

Try these two breath counting techniques to see if one resonates more:

1. Take a few deep inhales and exhales to center yourself and tell your body that you're ready to be present. When you feel semi-removed from the chaos of your day, it's time to start the breath counting exercise. Each inhale/exhale combination is one "count."

For example:

inhale, exhale, one.

inhale, exhale, two.

inhale, exhale, three.

See how high your number can get. It's not uncommon to lose track of your number around seven. Others can get up much, much higher. See where you're at and after a few tries, you'll find your ability to stay focused on the counting improves.

2. Again, take a few moments to center yourself. When you're ready to begin the breathing exercise, just keep repeating "one" in your head after each inhale/exhale sequence. Your goal in this technique is not to see how high your number can get but instead keeps you counting without the pressure of reaching a certain number. After you've used the first technique a few times, maybe you realize that your mind is good at multitasking and you're able to keep counting while other thoughts come and go. If that's the case and you find yourself not losing track and starting over, you'll begin to recognize the number you "need to reach" before your meditation time is up. This second technique takes that concern out of the equation while still using the same focus on the breath.

Good luck with your breathing! Let me know if either of these tips help you and your journey to mindfulness.

Namaste.
