Team Player of the month: Julie Urda

Julie serves as Recruiter and HR Generalist for the nonprofit international public health organization, Management Sciences for Health. Her work includes sourcing and securing global health experts to work with local stakeholders, both within the public and private sector, to improve the health of the world's poorest and most vulnerable people. Julie focuses primarily on staffing high-impact USAID-funded programs that work to enhance access to and improve the use of essential medicines and other technologies to fight against HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria and other communicable diseases. Previously, Julie recruited for international stability-focused development projects at DAI, where she helped organize the first USAID-funded teams to enter Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Julie's recruiting career started in legal recruiting; where in what seems like a different lifetime, she recruited corporate associates and partners in NY and DC after graduating from The American University Washington School of Law.

An avid distance runner since high school, Julie started practicing yoga in 2009 at Tranquil Space - and fell in love. Now she only wishes she'd come into the studio earlier! Julie's amazed by all of the kind-hearted, talented yogis she's had the opportunity to meet, including those she's had the pleasure to work with on the Tranquil Space team as a SA Most of all, she's super suprised and humbled to be considered Team Player-of-the-Month!

Yogi of the month: Nicole Collins

I am so honored to be Yogi of the Month! A friend brought me to Tranquil Space a year ago and I completely fell in love. My practice here has done so much for me physically and mentally. I'm a dancer from way back, but was no longer dancing when I first started at TS because of injuries and, frankly, a weak core. Basically, I thought my body had quit on me! But, within several months of beginning at TS, I had worked through my injuries and was back in dance class. Now I feel as flexible and strong as I was ten years ago.
Aside from the physical benefits, my practice at TS has guided me through a difficult time in my life and continues to help me find strength and compassion for myself and others. It has given me a positive place to go to clear my head and put my life in perspective.I am so grateful to have found TS and am so excited to get more involved as a studio assistant and may even decide to dive into teacher training soon.

Teacher Feature: Mary Catherine Starr

Over the past month or so, the crazy weather in DC has really caught me off guard. Being from the south, I'm not used to drastic ups and downs like this, and it's been doing a number on my balance--both mentally and physically. Similarly, with the change in time (yes, I'm still adjusting from "springing forward"), I've felt a bit off-kilter for the past couple of weeks. In my typical fashion, my way of handling an imbalance in my life is by running around at a high-speed, like a chicken with my head cut off, trying to find a way to get on top of everything I have to do. In my efforts to find balance, I've actually been running myself ragged trying to fit everything in, and even though my days are getting longer, I'm still never really "done."

As we move into April and I stop to reflect on the past month, I realize that this pace is not sustainable or "balanced" at all. Each spring it seems that I jump up, energized by the sunlight, ready to take on the world, only to come falling back to reality a few weeks later, realizing that conquering the world does not mean living in a sleep-deprived state, or mindlessly moving from one "to-do" to the next. By stopping to notice the effects of my springtime hysteria on my life and my yoga practice, I know that it is truly time to slow down.

I've witnessed this springtime frenzy in some of my classes, too, as students come in with a new found energy, but tighter shoulders and hips, and in some cases, difficulty listening to their bodies and not pushing past their edge. I've noticed this in my own practice, as well, and over the past week or so, have been making an extra effort to slow down--to step back, instead of jumping back to chaturanga, to take the modification when it feels right, and by coming into child's pose more often, searching for that moment of stillness in an otherwise constantly-moving day.

So, as April unfolds and the weather begins to get warmer, the cherry blossoms come out in full force, and we start to settle into the longer, sunlit days, I'm going to be working on slowing down. Taking time to unplug from the hustle and bustle of daily life, and to remind myself that the summer is on it's way and there is plenty of time to get everything done--while still taking time to stop and breathe.

Reflecting on this past month, have you been doing the run around, too? If so, how can you find simple ways to slow down the spring frenzy, and bask in the sunlight? Join me in setting an intention for the spring, and lets blossom together :)

Namaste,
Mary Catherine

Spa Spotlight: Barbara Jazzo

I like to think about massage in the same way that I think about yoga. Both modalities give the person the time and space to explore their bodies. Where do you hold tension? How is stress affecting you on a physical and emotional level ? How does your posture and body mechanics cause muscle imbalances which can lead to pain and tightness?

Receiving a massage allows you to become aware of those tension patterns. Often I will start to work on a client and they will say, "I didn’t realize I was tight there." Then, together we try to determine what is going on in life that is causing this area to be tight or painful. Is the problem the way you sleep, sit at your computer, carry your child, or carry your luggage or purse or is there something more going on?

Releasing stress, relaxing muscles, moving lactic acid out -- those are all the effects of massage. What you learn about what is going on in your body and how you can make small changes to improve the quality of your life is the greatest gift that massage provides.

April Musings

"I write emotional algebra." - Anais Nin

Happy April and happy spring. A glorious, transformative time of the year. As I reflect on the transitions taking place, it's as if DC is coming alive after months of stagnation. Cherry blossoms are blooming, birds are singing, and from time to time we're able to don open-toed shoes to yoga class.

I, too, am coming to a big transition with the final days of my 8-month internship at N Street Village, comp exams (le sigh), and return to Montreal to teach this month. At the end of April I will be officially done with half of my Master's in Social Work curriculum - only 2 more years to go! Class of 2013.

The lessons I've learned practicing yoga over the past 15 years have prepared me for this exciting new journey that (I hope) will take my do-gooding efforts to the next level. By practicing mindfulness with therapy clients, to assisting with anxiety issues by practicing pranayama, to writing down ongoing concerns that keep them up at night, I'm grateful for the co-mingling of skill sets. My plan is to focus on further development of Tranquil Space Foundation and add therapy into my mix of offerings. Plus, I know that the skills learned will help me grow as a yoga teacher and facilitator.

Writing has been an outlet of mine since age 8. As the above quote by Anais Nin points out, writing is a complex equation of thoughts, feelings, dreams, and regrets. One of the foundational yogic principles speaks to self-study and my favorite way to practice this is through ongoing self-reflection via writing. How was my day? How did I handle that challenging situation? How do I wish I would have handled it? Am I truly happy? Why did I react that way? How do I want to act next time the situation arise? What am I grateful for today? These simple questions can help us to reflect on what lies within.

Often times, emotions and dreams are begging for an outlet and writing can serve as that free therapist who supportively listens without judgment. I've recently fallen in love with the blending of art and journal writing appropriately called art journaling. A Psychology Today article recently touted that "the regular practice of creating via an art journal can reduce your heart rate, increase serotonin flow and immune cells, and decrease stress responses." Think paint, watercolor, sharpies, collages, photos, and more co-existing on a page in your journal.

As we transition into this new season full of blooming, I encourage you, too, to reflect on ways in which you can create emotional algebra. Pick up a pen and some scrap paper, let your hand move across it and write whatever comes to mind. It doesn't have to make sense, let it flow. Dreams, ideas, frustrations, concerns are all waiting to unfold. What is waiting within you?

Let's bloom,
Kimberly Wilson

Asana of the month: Sirsasana (Headstand)

Each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

According to BKS Iyengar, “regular practice of Sirsasana makes healthy blood flow through the brain cells. This rejuvenates them so that thinking power increases and thoughts become clearer. The asana is thus a tonic for people whose brains tire quickly. It ensures a proper blood supply to the pituitary and pineal glands in the brain…. People suffering from loss of sleep, memory, and vitality have recovered by the regular and correct practice of this asana and have become fountains of energy. The lungs gain the power to resist any climate and stand up to any work, which relieves one from colds, coughs, tonsillitis, halitosis, and palpitations. It keeps the body warm…. Regular practice of Sirsasana will show marked improvement in the hemoglobin content of the blood…. [It] develops the body, disciplines the mind, and widens the horizons of the spirit. One becomes balanced and self-reliant in pain and pleasure, loss and gain, shame and fame, and defeat and victory.” [Light on Yoga, at p. 190]

Salamba Sirsasana I (Basic Headstand Pose):
Salamba = with support
Sirsa = head

Benefits:
  • Calms the brain and helps relieve stress and mild depression
  • Stimulates the pituitary and pineal glands
  • Strengthens the arms, legs, and spine
  • Strengthens the lungs
  • Tones the abdominal organs
  • Improves digestion
  • Helps relieve the symptoms of menopause
  • Therapeutic for asthma, infertility, insomnia, and sinusitis

Cautions/Contraindications:
  • Back injury
  • Headache
  • Heart condition
  • High blood pressure
  • Menstruation
  • Neck injury
  • Detached retina
  • Low blood pressure: Don't start practice with this pose
  • Pregnancy: If you are experienced with this pose, you can continue to practice it late into pregnancy. However, don't take up the practice of Sirsasana after you become pregnant.

Preparatory Poses:
  • Adho Mukha Svanasana
  • Salamba Sarvangasana
  • Uttanasana
  • Virasana

Follow-up Poses:
  • Adho Mukha Svanasana
  • Balasana

Song that Most Comes to Mind While in the Posture:
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll.”

Treat Yourself

Oftentimes, we may see getting a bodywork session as a luxury. However, I believe it has the potential to be something that encompasses and affects the entire person profoundly.

Recent progress in brain research shows that if we become mindful and look at what is happening in the mind, we create the opportunity for old patterns to unravel and therefore the opportunity for change. View this video to learn more.

Bodywork can be a powerful tool in shifting the mind in this way. When we come to a massage session and become aware of patterns of tightness and tension, we go through the same process. We step out of the experience and start to watch the patterns that entrap us, creating the possibility for change and new patterns to form.

This insight has been very powerful to me as it lends what may often seem like an indulgence, treating myself to a spa treatment, takes on a broader and more encompassing meaning.

Anne Theil is a licensed massage therapist and sees clients in the Spa at Tranquil Space. To book an appointment call us at 202.328.9642.

mindful mOMent

Looking for a way to deepen your yoga practice? Consider spending just as much time honing your mindfulness practice as you do on your asana practice. Keep an eye out for this new recurring TS blog column, "mindful mOMent" for tips, mantras and exercises to help focus your mind.

Singling Out Your Senses:

Sometimes we get so caught up in getting from here to there or focusing on what happened earlier today and what needs to be accomplished tonight that we completely miss out on now.

The next time you're walking to the metro or driving in your car, take a moment to hone in on one of your senses.

  • Listen: you'll be amazed by all the sounds you hear when you're truly tuned into hearing them as opposed to letting them become white noise. You can actually hear birds in the city!

  • Look: instead of gazing down at the sidewalk in front of you (or while you're waiting at a stoplight) really look around. It's especially interesting to focus on sights around you if it's a walk or drive that you've made tons of times. You will see things you've never noticed before...guaranteed.

  • Smell: The signs of spring are all around us. You might see the trees budding or the flowers blossoming, but have you taken a moment to breath the spring in? Try it!

  • Feel: If you're driving, focus on the steering wheel. It's such a familiar part of our lives and yet have you ever really felt it? And if you're walking, pay attention to the feeling of your feet inside your shoes or the sensation of taking each step.

Pick one sense every day to focus on. Your mind will drift and you'll forget what you're supposed to be paying attention to, but keep bringing your focus back. You'll realize how much of now that you've been missing.

Bloom into Spring

snapped during sunday stroll

Let's Bloom
"Spring has returned. The Earth is like a child that knows poems." –Rainer Maria Rilke

A new season, a fresh start.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to bloom into spring:

Spring clean: closets, bookshelves, drawers, life, your body (detox)
Put away heavy coats, bring out color
Eat more fruits and veggies
Start your day with a green smoothie
Plant something and watch it grow
Pick up fresh cut daffodils for your kitchen table
Try something new: yin yoga, a sewing class, dance, write, mindfulness meditation
Go on a retreat (Join me + Parri in Costa Rica) or create your own adventure
Slow down: sip tea, meditate, indulge in a bed day (p. 87 of Tranquilista)
Savor an early morning stroll (+ avoid the crowds) to see the cherry blossoms
Eat ice cream and/or gelato
Sit outside and savor vitamin D
Bake kale chips

How do you plan to bloom into spring?

Namaste,
Kimberly

New Spring Finds In the Boutique

Hey everyone! The days are beginning to have more hours of light. Flowers are starting to bloom and new items have arrived in the boutique.

I almost forgot how beautiful some of the merchandise was since we last saw them in January. It was a nice surprise to open up the boxes and find the new additions that adorn our shelves.

First up are the wonderfully designed greeting cards, envelope sets, journals and tote bags. Bright and cheery floral prints and let's not forget glitter embellishments, as well as inspirational statements are sure to make you smile.

Do you need to accessorize your next outfit? Of course you do. Check out the adorable paper clip earrings by An Era's Ambiance. These little gems are made by the same local designer who makes the skeleton key necklaces. If you missed the necklaces be sure to take a glance them and the new earrings on your next visit.

Need something to carry things your ID and other belongings. Why not be the center of attention with a cute wristlet from Ecoist. These little cuties are made with recycled materials such as candy wrappers, soda labels and other food packaging.
The result is a fashionable bag that is sure to turn heads.

Finally, we love to share our love of candles. They bring a warm light to any space and fill the air with fragrances that calm, invigorate or simply enhance one's mood. K. Hall designs have created a few new scents just in time for spring. Choose from sugared magnolia, grove and my personal favorite, cherry blossom.

As always, we welcome any feedback. Let us know by posting a comment to this blog post or sending an email to marq@tranquilspace.com.

Take a Break

When I am not behind the massage table at Tranquil Space I am a nurse working at a DC public health clinic. Like many of my massage clients, I spend several hours at the computer, so I understand the common complaints of tension in the neck, shoulders and back. I encourage people to set a timer on their desks set for at least every thirty minutes. This is a reminder to take time to stretch, help relieve tension and prevent injuries from the cumulative effects of the bent over posture of our computer age.

Recently, my clinic installed an energy saving device that shuts off the lights in my office every 20 minutes if no motion is detected. Apparently my lightening speed typing is not enough to trip the sensor, so I find myself in the dark quite often. The first few times I found this annoying. An old quote came back to me: "It's better to light one flame than to curse the darkness." These words have nspired me at more challenging times in life but in this instance, it encouraged me to follow my own advice and stretch at these perfectly timed intervals. (sometimes I already have a candle lit and enjoy the stretch break by candle light.)

The following are some simple desk stretches I do. I encourage you to incorporate these or ones you already find helpful into a regular habit at your desk. Of course, stretch only as far as is comfortable and stop if it causes pain.

1. Neck release: Drop your chin to your chest as you exhale. Inhale and slowly
let one ear drop to that shoulder. Exhale and roll your chin to your chest. Inhale and roll your opposite ear to its shoulder. Exhale and return to your chest. Repeat as desired.

2. Shoulder rolls: Breathe in and out slowly as you first roll your shoulders forward several times then backward several times. Breathe in and raise tops of shoulders towards your ears and hold 5 seconds. Breathe out while relaxing shoulders to neutral. Repeat. Breathe out slowly as you return your shoulders back to neutral. Repeat.

3. Spine stretch: Raise your arms overhead. Stretch one arm toward the ceiling and hold. Relax. Repeat with opposite arm. Alternate several times.

4. Upper Body stretch: Inhale and lightly clasp your hands behind your head without pushing your head forward and avoid any pressure to the neck; elbows are pointing to the sides. Exhale and very slowly twist your upper body as one unit in one direction and hold for two seconds. Inhale and return to center. Exhale and repeat twist to opposite side.

5. Back tension release: Push your chair away from the desk by stretching your arms forward and resting your hands on the desk, Exhale and lower your head while arching your back, (making sure to protect your back by pulling your belly button towards your spine.) Relax a moment with head down. Inhale and raise your head and chest , arching your back in the other direction. Repeat.
6. Smile

Namaste:
I honor the place in you where
the entire universe resides.
I honor the place in you of love, of light, of peace.
I honor the place within where if you are in that place in you
and I am in that place in me
There is only one of us

Fuse Pilates Bootcamp: Tone Your Core!

by Kevin Waldorf-Cruz: Tranquil Space teacher and a Fuse Pilates fan.

For years I stayed away from pilates classes, because they seemed truly unpleasant. I used to joke that pilates made me cry. This was part due to the challenge that it brought to my core muscles, as well as the redundant repetitive routine. As someone who likes things to feel good and craves creativity, this just wasn’t the right exercise for me.

However, this all changed when I discovered Fuse Pilates. Fuse is a balanced mix of traditional mat pilates, adapted reformer/apparatus exercises, blended with Lotte Berke techniques, and a little bit of yoga inspiration. These techniques challenged my abs, legs, back, and arms in a whole different way, resulting in strength, tone, and better balance. I found myself standing taller, holding plank longer, sustaining arm-balances with ease, as well as just feeling more aligned in my own body.

So I am very excited to have Fuse Pilates Bootcamp at Tranqul Space. This is a great opportunity to shed the “winter layers” and cultivate a greater sense of body empowerment. I look forward to seeing you there!

Namaste,
Kevin Waldorf-Cruz

mindful mOMent

Looking for a way to deepen your yoga practice? Consider spending just as much time honing your mindfulness practice as you do on your asana practice. Keep an eye out for this new recurring TS blog column, "mindful mOMent" for tips, mantras and exercises to help focus your mind.

A mindful mantra: Until you spend time training your mind to concentrate, you can't expect yourself to be able to immediately slow down your thoughts. Using a mantra, or repeated phrase, can provide a point of focus for your wondering mind.

One of the favorite mantras here at Tranquil Space is:

Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu

Translation:
May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.

Begin your mindful practice by finding a comfortable position. Spend a few moments reading the mantra out loud until it is memorized (don't worry if you have to keep looking back at it to start). As you continue to say the mantra try to bring the volume of your voice down slowly until you're not making any audible sounds. At that time, begin repeating the mantra to yourself without moving your lips. Your mind will wander away from the mantra. The key is to acknowledge the wandering and rein the flowing thoughts back in to focus on the mantra. Continue repeating the mantra as long as desired. Maybe start with five minutes, or two if that's all the time you have. Your body, and mind, will thank you.

Book Review: Meditations from the Mat: Daily Reflections on the Path of Yoga by Rolf Gates

Welcome to my first post on the Tranquil Space blog. I’m a voracious reader and since coming to yoga and Tranquil Space have been reading yoga books for pleasure and to enhance my practice.

A friend of mine recommended Rolf Gates’ Meditations from the Mat: Daily Reflections on the Path of Yoga to enhance my life and my practice. The book contains chapters on the 8 limbs of yoga and a daily meditation for each particular limb. When I need more concentration in my life I head to the Dharana section and the accompanying daily meditations. When I’m feeling strong and balanced in my physical practice I gain insight from the Asana section.

Each daily meditation is prefaced by a quote from varied sources, such as the Yoga Sutras, Hooke, the Bible, and Einstein. The analogy of stepping on the daily mat of life is prevalent in each meditation. I suggest this book should be on the shelf of all yogis and for any one who wants to bring more inner self awareness to their life.

The book review is the sole opinion of Julia Coney

Arlington traffic alert tonight

2246058686_969f37097b_m
Tonight's Arlington Mardi Gras parade promises to be a lot of fun, but if you're planning on driving to the Arlington 5:30pm or 7pm class, be ready for some traffic both before and after... we'll join in with everyone else and recommend taking Metro. The good news is the Arlington studio is mere steps away from the traffic-less bliss of the Virginia Square station.

More scoop here on the streets impacted... http://ballston.patch.com/articles/parade-causes-clarendon-street-closures.

Happy International Women's Day, by the way!

The Weekend Update with Mary Casey

It is dreary outside, but sunny this weekend at Tranquil Space!
I have been feeling a little foggy today with the weather, but Crystal fluttered in speaking of the sprouting daffodils and her new baby niece. While we wait for the spring we can experience or own sense of rebirth each time we step onto the yoga mat. As I have manned the front desk today, I have been energized by yogis floating past me revitalized by their practice. I'm not brushing away my coffee cup, but yoga is also quite lovely :)
