Kim Magraw, one of our massage therapists in the spa, is away taking time to travel through China and Nepal. He sent photos of him in his Tranquil Space tee while standing in Beijing at the Forbidden Palace and then in Nepal at the Chitwan National Park after he bathed with the elephants!

What is it that makes us happy?

Thriving relationships? Fulfilling career? Financial security?

It's widely believed that if we are doing well in these areas we 'should' be happy. So, how come we often find ourselves doing everything right but feeling like something is still missing?

Although we often think that happy people achieve it easily (i.e. making decisions that work out for them, having successful careers, healthy relationships and financial security). Interestingly, what Dr. Brene Brown finds makes people happy is the acceptance of life as having necessary pain, hurt and disappointment AND subsequently the willingness to make themselves vulnerable to these things both in life and even more significantly in relationships.

In this video Brene Brown talks about her research on happiness and vulnerability.
http://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_on_vulnerability.html

What is vulnerability in relationships?
Communicating our deepest needs
Asking for help
Talking to others about our hopes, dreams, and fears
Apologizing
Saying "no" when someone asks you to do something
Expressing your thoughts and opinion

Vulnerability is what we feel in those moments when we don't know how the other person is going to respond. According to Brown, it's our desire to keep ourselves safe (not-vulnerable) that we subsequently sacrifice our own happiness.

When was the last time you pushed yourself to feel vulnerable?
I encourage you to take the challenge today!!!

Meet Mary Casey: Dupont's Beloved Weekend Manager

Mary rockin' her bindhi at India Night

Mary Casey found herself at Tranquil Space after losing the competition for mat space with a cat while attempting to yoga through some Rodney Yee videos. Beginning her practice at P Street, she became a dedicated yogi at the 17th Street and Arlington studios after a personal record in the Philadelphia Marathon landed her under the knife where the nice doctor told her she would no longer be running every day. While yoga has certainly become a rewarding cross training activity for her, Mary was surprised to discover how her introduction to Tranquil Space and a regular yoga practice would be a complete spiritual and lifestyle change.

Mary has an undergraduate degree in Music Industry, and after reconciling that she was not meant to be a rock star after all, wound up in a career in media as an Audio Engineer. She has worked mostly on documentaries for the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, and National Geographic. After a long stint in television, Mary decided to pursue a master’s degree in International Development and Conflict Resolution at the George Washington University. While opening up her schedule for basking in the sunshine at the National Cathedral rose garden to read hundreds of books on politics, governments, and war, additionally Mary became a studio assistant at Tranquil Space, and later, a Tranquility Concierge. She is now incredibly exited to be spending her time as Weekend Manager helping others to enjoy the benefits of yoga and doing her best to extend her peace studies into creating the most nurturing and peaceful environment for her weekend yogis to practice and rejuvenate.

Please join us in welcOMing our beloved Mary Casey into the oh-so-talented management team mix! Stop by and say "namaste" next Saturday or Sunday when you're at the Dupont studio.

Savor a Dose of Tranquility

In need of quick restoration? Try my favorite yin yoga pose: Butterfly.

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone
through to achieve that beauty.” ~ Maya Angelou

This yoga pose works wonders on stretching the lower back and is stimulates the kidney meridian of the body – considered critical to fluid energy flow. Meridians (based on Chinese medicine) are invisible pathways through which energy flows. During an acupuncture session, needles are inserted into meridians to open blocked energy and allow it to flow freely through meridians. Yin yoga has a similar effect sans needles! Each pose stimulates a certain meridian and stretches the connective tissue of the body – rather than muscle in a typical yoga class.

To begin, sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you. Bend your knees and bring the soles of your feet together. Move your feet forward so that they form a diamond shape. Your knees will resemble butterfly wings – hence the pose name. Bend forward from your hips and round your spine. Let your head rest into the soles of your feet or onto a blanket or pillow that you place between your head and feet. Take deep full breaths and stay here one to five minutes.

With yoga we want to avoid pain. Find that sweet spot of sensation located between stagnation and pain. In yoga – and life – it’s referred to as “finding your edge.” If you are feeling any discomfort beyond strong sensation, back out of the pose by adding another pillow or lessening the time you hold the pose.

Benefits: Stimulating the kidney meridian helps to balance bodily fluids in the blood and circulatory system, lymphatic system, endocrine system, and urinary system; helps regulate blood pressure; offers an emotional opening and releases fear.

      The TS Intern

My name is Sam O’Brien, I am 13 years old, I live in Washington DC and I attend school at the Field School. I enjoy skateboarding, reading, playing with animals, hanging out with my friends, acting, and playing video games. My hobby is that I play the cello. My accomplishments are that I’ve acted in a play at the studio Theatre and I have a black belt in tae kwon do. The reason why I’m here is because my school doses a two week internship every year so I chose to come to Tranquil Space. My connection to Tranquil Space is through my mother. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer she looked to natural ways of healing herself after going through chemo and radiation. Now she does things like yoga and only eats raw food. I’ll be interning at Tranquil Space for the next two weeks if you see me around say “hi”.

New York Gift Fair February 2011

I am back from the big apple and what a fun time. Thanks to the eagle-eyes of Julia Coney, we came back with lots of information on new lines and hopefully we'll be seeing the fruits of our labor this spring.

All of our friends were at the Javitz Center showing off the latest arrivals. One of our favorite highlights was Paddywax's eco green candles. These soy candles have been poured into recycled wine bottles and feature wood tops. I think the excitement that I have for these candles is sure to spread to you.

Papaya was also there showing off new journals, bags and cards with their signature flare. Earthlust was also showing off new designs and we hope to have new Tranquil Space branded bottles by Earthlust sometime in the spring.

One of the goals of attending the gift fair is to find new items for the boutique. Julia and stopped by the Leakey Collection booth where they had beautiful necklaces, bracelets and otherhandmade jewelry by the Maasai women in Africa. They also had an amazing product called marula oil which you could use all over your body.
We placed an order of lovely French soaps from La Lavande. Scents include lemongrass, jasmine, mint leaf, lavender and ocean. This new company has several other great gifts that will make the receipient a happy person. The soaps will arrive in March.

Joya studios had a wonderful selection of candles and our favorite find solid perfume inside beautiful necklaces and pendants. A great way to enchance your wardrobe and have a fragrance to boot.

We took the shuttle over to the piers to view the new vendors to the show. Spotted on the showroom floor was Ping Wu from season 7 of Project Runway. She was showing her cool collection of accessories.

Kimberly and I will be looking over the catalogs, samples and information from the new vendors and making decisions to bring in new merchandise for you to choose from. If you are out and about and see something that you think may fit the vibe of the boutique, please let me know. You can find me at the studio in the evenings Monday through Friday or shoot me an email at marq@tranquilspace.com.

Has life gotten you into a pretzel? Unwind and de-stress with a craniosacral therapy treatment.

Craniosacral therapy is a very gentle, hands-on energy therapy that works to free up tension patterns in the body.  Tension patterns can be created through stress from physical, emotional, or mental disturbances.  The result of that stress can create feelings or symptoms of anxiety, headaches, low energy, back pain, or central nervous system disorders, among other imbalances.

During the treatment, you are fully clothed, lying down on the treatment table.  Evaluation of the craniosacral system is done through light touch on various parts of the body (feet, shins, lower back, upper chest, neck and head), assessing for imbalances, restrictions and constrictions in the fascia layer.
The fascia layer is the connective tissue that surrounds and envelops all of our organs, muscles, bones, and nerves. It is also connected to the layer that surrounds our spinal cord and brain. Essentially, it’s like the sock or nylon that keeps everything together and connected.

Tension patterns are released by placing both hands on the area of restriction, and following the energy rhythm or pull. What you feel at the end of the treatment is complete relaxation and a sense of being more grounded.

Unlike massage, the amount of pressure is very light and non-forceful. Craniosacral therapy differs from acupuncture because there are no needles involved and is completely non-invasive.

One of the key aspects of craniosacral therapy is the connection between the doctor and patient. Craniosacral therapy requires creating a sacred space, quieting and grounding body and mind, in order to tune in to the subtle energy rhythms of the craniosacral system. In that quiet space of listening to the body, I have come to find that much information is held in the tissues, information I find that is very useful to assist in the patients healing process.

If you've been feeling like your shoulders are scrunched up at your ears, or know that you carry your stress in your stomach or elsewhere, craniosacral therapy may be the treatment that will help you find your ease.

Dr. Rhodo Nguyen addresses the health of the whole person in an integrated approach that uses Naturopathic Medicine, nutritional counseling, colon hydrotherapy and Craniosacral Therapy. To book your appointment, please call 202.328.9642 or email drnguyen@tranquilspace.com

Asana of the Month - Urdhva Dhanurasana (Wheel Pose)

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

Preeminent Iyengar yoga teacher John Schumacher, in his eloquently written column for Yoga Journal, reminds us that, although Urdhva Dhanurasana and the other backbending asanas strengthen and stretch your muscles and create mobility in the spine and the hip and shoulder joints, the real power of the poses is more subtle. Mr. Schumacher writes:

"The physical presence of your bones and muscles is evident. Your nervous system, however, is essentially unseen—like the back of your body. Since both your back and your nervous system cannot be seen, they must be perceived from within, sensed rather than thought about. And since most of the actions of the backbends occur in the unseeable back of your body, developing the power to perceive what is happening and what to do draws you from the front of your brain and your externally oriented organs of perception into the deep recesses of the back brain and the unknown corners of the intuitive mind. The flow of awareness in the practice of yoga is from the external toward the internal, from the periphery to the core, from the objective to the subjective. You must depart eventually from the familiarity and solidity of the known and embark on the great, perennial adventure into the unknown. As with the practice of Urdhva Dhanurasana, effort is required on this journey; mistakes are inevitable; obstacles will arise. As with the practice of Urdhva Dhanurasana, you must persist. If the words of the sages are true, when your spiritual travels bring you to that mysterious place where you embrace and transcend the duality of the known and unknown, you will find your Self waiting there." [Yoga Journal, online edition, "Asana Column: Urdhva Dhanurasana (Backbend)"]

Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward Bow or Wheel Pose):
      Urdhva = upward
      Dhanu = bow

      Benefits:
      • Stretches the chest and lungs
      • Strengthens the arms and wrists, legs, buttocks, abdomen, and spine
      • Stimulates the thyroid and pituitary
      • Increases energy and counteracts depression
      • Therapeutic for asthma, back pain, infertility, and osteoporosis

      Cautions/Contraindications:
      • Back injury
      • Carpal Tunnel syndrome
      • Heart condition
      • High or low blood pressure

      Founder's February Musings

"When we sip tea, we are on our way to serenity." - Alexandra Stoddard

WelcOMe to February at Tranquil Space. As we transition into the second month of this new year (and new decade), take a mOMent to honor your efforts thus far and your ongoing tranquility journey. Did you try out our 21-day challenge? Did you cut out some meat or sugar from your diet and replace it with greens? Did you sign up to learn a new skill? How are your resolutions unfolding? My hope is that you're feeling a sense of serenity and still basking in the newness of the new year. If not (or you'd like more) read on.

At Tranquil Space we share the notion of taking the practice of yoga off the mat and into everyday life. It's wonderful to have a beautiful yoga pose, but what's the point if the rest of life feels out of sorts, messy, and like a struggle? There are continuous ups and downs (plus occasional snow storms) so I encourage you to take time to nurture yourself with infusions of mindful self care and ongoing self study (svadyaya). Below are a few of my favorite tips:

      1. Begin and end each day with reflection. Take time at the start of your day to get thoughts out of your head and onto paper. This mini brain dump can do wonders to relieve pent up cares and concerns. Conclude your day with a wrap up on what you're proud of, what you'd like to do different next time, and anything that is weighing heavily.

      2. Explore your dreams monthly. Are your daily actions moving in the direction of your dreams? If not, can you make some changes to do so? For example, is an ongoing goal to do a volunteer vacation in India? Begin by carving out time for online research, determining travel dates and tickets, and securing time off. Move daily in the direction of your dreams.

      3. Practice mindfulness each day. Be fully present with the person in front of you (versus checking your iPhone for the latest tweet). Consciously walk to work - feel the ground beneath you. Notice your surroundings. Eat your meal slowly and deliberately (versus standing up or on-the-go). Join Todd and me for weekly Mindfulness Meditation classes.

      4. Listen to your body. Notice how good it feels after a meal at Cafe Green (down the street from our Dupont Circle studio). Let it rest when you can tell it's begging for down time. Indulge in a massage or visit to an acupuncturist as a way to passively nurture it.

      5. Savor a soak in the tub. This self-care act is a nightly one for me during winter months when even my bones feel cold. This, too, can be a practice of mindfulness. Surround yourself with candles, water with a mint sprig, and slip into a sacred bath. If you live in a full house with many beings, this may be your very special room of your own (highly encouraged by Virginia Woolf).

      6. Sip your tea with gratitude. As the above quote by author Alexandra Stoddard reminds us, tea can have a powerful effect on our day. Mine always starts with Tazo Zen tea with a splash (ok, big splash) of agave nectar. Many stop mid-day to savor tea time. Can you, too, start a ritual at home or the office? How about after your yoga practice at Tranquil Space? Savor each sip and count this toward a very special mindfulness practice.

Please join me in making February a month of heart opening through our asana of the month, attention to mindful self-care, joining our book club discussion of Living Your Yoga by Judith Lasater (THIS Friday at 6:30pm in Dupont Circle's tea lounge), and continuous reflection. May you experience many mOMents of tranquility this month on AND off the yoga mat. You deserve it. Namaste.
