Book Review: Meditations from the Mat: Daily Reflections on the Path of Yoga by Rolf Gates

Welcome to my first post on the Tranquil Space blog. I’m a voracious reader and since coming to yoga and Tranquil Space have been reading yoga books for pleasure and to enhance my practice.

A friend of mine recommended Rolf Gates’ Meditations from the Mat: Daily Reflections on the Path of Yoga to enhance my life and my practice. The book contains chapters on the 8 limbs of yoga and a daily meditation for each particular limb. When I need more concentration in my life I head to the Dharana section and the accompanying daily meditations. When I’m feeling strong and balanced in my physical practice I gain insight from the Asana section.

Each daily meditation is prefaced by a quote from varied sources, such as the Yoga Sutras, Hooke, the Bible, and Einstein. The analogy of stepping on the daily mat of life is prevalent in each meditation. I suggest this book should be on the shelf of all yogis and for any one who wants to bring more inner self awareness to their life.

The book review is the sole opinion of Julia Coney
