Teacher Feature - Jodi Darlage

Is it possible to burn off our self-defeating thoughts through our yoga practice? The ancient sages were on to something here and I would have to wholeheartedly agree with them. Think about when you awaken refreshed from a yummy class and blissful savasana. The mind is quiet, the heart is at peace and you feel rejuvenated. Whatever limiting patterns you may have carried into the room and onto your mat may have been swept away during your practice. However, in our daily lives many of us find ourselves consumed and even controlled by our thoughts and it can become nearly impossible to hit the pause button of the mind. Yet, at a much deeper level those thoughts can become permanent storylines implanted in the mind and can start to limit our way of being. These imprints or seed habit patterns of the subconscious mind are coined samskaras. A healthy level of external samskaras is needed to help us keep those patterns from becoming fully recycled into our normal behavior. However, when our samskaras penetrate deep within the cellular layer of the body they become internalized, rooted and can start to hold us back physically and emotionally. This is when we must begin to learn to let go and release those stuck patterns in order to create space for peace, happiness and opening in our lives. Do we face samkaras when we approach a difficult pose on the mat or find ourselves in a challenging circumstance off the mat? Do we stuff those samskaras deeper into the subtle ethereal body? Or can we begin to acknowledge our negative patterns without judgment and simply let go?

We all come to the yoga mat for a variety of reasons and each day, month and year those reasons change. When I first came to the mat, I was recovering from an injury sustained while racing in a Triathlon. At the time, I had little concept of anything beyond the physical benefits of yoga let alone this idea of samskaras. From that first day I stepped on my mat to the present moment I was awakened to an entirely magical carpet ride experience and an opportunity to begin to address my own samskaras. We will soon be leaving 2010 behind and welcoming in a beautiful New Year. What samskaras do you wish to leave behind as you manifest more space for health, healing and happiness in 2011?

This Saturday, December 4th from 4-6pm in Arlington I will be leading a mid Holiday Detox Workshop where we will continue to melt away our limiting thoughts and behaviors. Or if you desire a weeklong self-care retreat, come join me May 28th- June 4th in Puerto Escondido, Mexico! Surf off those negative imprints of the mind and release your cares to the outgoing tide of Mother Ocean.

Team Player of the Month - Laarni Reyes

The main highlight of my life for 2010 was being a part of the Tranquil Space Team. My story started in January when a friend of mine and his partner decided to give me a gift certificate for my birthday. They felt like I needed to take yoga class to help me chill. Failed relationships one after another whether romantic or not can take a toll to anyone and I must admit I was in the dark that time. I began feeling the effectiveness of breathing and getting inspired by the reflection given by Melissa Van Orman at the end of each class. The were couple of times the reflection reading would hit me and I would secretly cry myself in savasana. Then I thought to use up my free time productively so I applied as a studio assistant. Now I work behind the desk every Thursday night as a tranquil Space concierge. Every time I would come to my shift I never think of it like any other part time job. It is a service for my Tranquil Space community, my personal haven, a place to keep me grounded, to check my ego, to be surrounded by genuine & kindred people who inspired me to be a better person.

Yogi of the Month - Lisa Calandriello

I began my journey in yoga seeking another way to help keep fit and reduce stress and quickly learned that yoga would be more than just that. As my practice began to develop, I found that yoga brings me clarity of mind, mindfulness, and relaxation, with the added benefits of a physically fit and toned body and a reduced stress level. I have to thank a college classmate, who I reconnected with at Yoga on the Mall this past May and a teacher from Tranquil Space, who I met on the metro platform on the way home that day for helping bring me into the Tranquil Space community. I came to my first class at TS in July, when I was seeking to add some variety to my practice. Two days later, I bruised my tailbone after falling down some stairs when leaving a class at another studio. The ER doctor told me I could continue to practice yoga, but had to modify my practice to avoid putting pressure on my tailbone. Three days later, I became a regular at TSA, where I instantly felt connected to the community. I spent my first month introducing myself to all my new teachers and sharing the story of my injury. My teachers helped me modify my practice so that I could continue to receive the benefits of yoga without pain or further injury, and kept me coming back to my mat. I'm all healed now, but know that yoga and the TS community helped me recover as fast as I did. In the last 5 months, I've enjoyed many a tea and cookies after class in the studio, made many friends, and have continued to deepen my practice. I have learned to work within my limitations, but also to recognize when it's appropriate to challenge them.

This holiday season being part of the TS community is one of the many things I am thankful for. Tranquil Space quickly became my yoga home and I hope to be a part of the community for a long time. I look forward to having many opportunities in the new year to continue to deepen my practice, to make more new friends, to share my practice with others, and to continue learning whenever I can. Thank you for being such a great community.

Happy Holidays! Namaste.

Top 10 tips for Tranquility during the Holly Daze

photo courtesy of darren hester via flickr

I'm writing to encourage tranquility during the upcOMing holly daze! Here are my top 10 tips for basking in being despite the hustle of the season:

1. Savor a bed day. (How to on p. 86-87 of Tranquilista)

2. Let go of expectations and bask in the moment.

3. Accept others for who they are. Remember, the only person you can change is yourself. Yes, even Aunt Bessie.

4. Join moi for a 4-week e-course outlining ways to live life fully, with tranquility, and a dash of flair. The four sessions focus on favorite tranquility tools and are broken out into mind, body, soul, and a combo module. During the course, you will have access to a private blog complete with musings and weekly podcasts, along with a sprinkling of lifestyle-focused videos. Starts THIS Wednesday. Details here.

5. Dial in for inspiration. Over 200 episodes of tranquility available for free via the Tranquility du Jour podcast on iTunes. Check out the new iPhone app, too.

6. Get moving: yoga, walking, biking, hiking, snow shoeing, skiing, ice skating.

7. Do-good: reach out to another being in need. Hold a door for someone, volunteer at a soup kitchen, do a canned food drive, collect toiletries for a homeless shelter, adopt an animal, sponsor a rescued farm animal.

8. Sit in quiet meditation.

9. Savor a hot bath. Nothing calms my mind, warms my body, or nurtures my spirit quite like a soak in the tub topped with soothing bath products.

10. Curl up with a good book. A few of my favorites will soon be noted in the sidebar of my blog, Tranquility du Jour.

What are your favorite ways to bask in tranquility during this season?

May your launch of the holly daze be filled with tranquility. You are beautiful. Namaste.

Healthy Holiday

Say what? Is it possible? Starting from Halloween, then onto Thanksgiving, and finally closing out the year with the usual celebrations, we are given many reasons to overindulge and add a few pounds to the scale.

Beyond the extra weight, it’s also a time to overspend, exercise less, drink more and get sick. Do we really need to have that experience? Thankfully, the answer is no. The thoughtful decisions we make now can help our New Year’s resolutions next year. The idea is to think in terms of moderation.

In preparing your upcoming Thanksgiving meal, why not make a few adjustments to exchange the food coma for quality time with friends and family. “Healthy” doesn’t have to mean bland, boring, or basic. Though the word does suggest a step away from heavy cream and salt, and deep-fried foods.

Some things to think about:
* Remember your veggies - your meal is not complete without those important side dishes. Think roasted veggies, bright and light green beans, mashed sweet potatoes, and sautéed swiss chard or kale with garlic and onions. Your vegetables (when not overcooked) are packed full of phytonutrients and fiber, and also happen to be low in calories.

* Savory seasonings – Spruce up your dishes with herb-infused oils, gourmet sea salts and spice blends. A touch of truffle sea salt to mashed potatoes or vegetables helps to infuse a lot of flavor without having to add cream or butter. Also, there are many variety of herb seasoning blends that do wonders to waken up your palate.

* Heart healthy fats – In most of your recipes for both savory dishes and baked treats, you can substitute the butter or margarine for olive oil. Try looking for a more smooth and buttery olive oil (vs. grassy or peppery) for baking. Avoiding those extra saturated and trans fats will help keep your cholesterol levels in check.

* Eating just the right amount – Bring some awareness into your food experience and enjoy every bite, not just the first and last bites. The awareness helps you also to sense the feeling of fullness. If you feel full, it’s ok to stop and enjoy the conversations at the table. You’ll find that the pause in eating will help the satiety signals from your stomach to reach your brain so you don’t have to ask for seconds (or thirds). The best part is, you get leftovers the next day without all the cooking and cleaning.

* Don’t go hungry – Remember that Thankgiving dinner is just one meal in your day. Keep your metabolism strong by eating your breakfast, snack, and lunch on that same day as well. Skipping those meals will just make you more hungry by dinnertime, therefore more prone to overeating and craving sugar and fats.

These simple suggestions go a long way in helping you to stay balanced through the holiday with all the fun and less regret. Your body and mind will be happy.

Celebrating the Fall with Yoga in Nature

This past weekend, 16 yogis woke up bright and early to brave the colder temperatures and hit the trails for a day of Yoga in Nature, a karma-based workshop led by Katie and Jen. The day kicked off with a beautiful 6 mile hike through the back country near Shenandoah National Park, followed by a yoga practice in the comfort and warmth of fellow TS yogini Mary Humphrey’s cozy weekend retreat. The group ended their lovely fall day fireside, enjoying delicious homemade soups, s’mores and apple cider. What better way to welcome the Fall?

Due to the great turnout, the karma workshop raised $270 for the Piedmont Environmental Council. A VERY special thank you to Mary, David, Kymber and John for their hospitality--and to all of the yogis who participated in this fun event.

Keep a lookout for information about the next Yoga in Nature event--we're looking forward to it!

Overcoming Anxiety thru Yoga

Many who practice yoga, are also simultaneously exposed to prescriptions of “mindfulness” and “compassion” as the antidote for anything that runs the gamut of standard suffering. From dealing with a life altering event, being stuck in an unfulfilling career, or drawn to dysfunctional relationships, the response to stress has departed significantly from the socially accepted copings of eating, drinking, and denying. Now, we have prescription-phrases such as “Be Present”, “Make peace with yourself” and “Live authentically”.

Emotions used to be bottled-up, away from consciousness, in a place that heals them serendipitously as they are repressed. Today, it’s considered a sign of emotional prowess to be able to embrace your feelings. We are eager to experience the variety of ways that one emotion such as ‘anger’ could be unpacked and processed into a multitude of different colors, memories, experiences, thoughts, and images. But what if embracing the feelings/experience doesn’t work for everyone? Although there is a plethora of evidence that freedom comes from being able to be with discomforting feelings and experiences, there may also be an alternative:

Sue tells her story in Yoga Journal about overcoming anxiety by encouraging the warrior/fighter instead of the nurturer to embrace and cope with the anxiety. http://community.yogajournal.com/_Embracing-the-Anxiety/BLOG/2749742/25925.html

“Every time the anxiety comes up, and because I have generalized anxiety and it comes up thirty times a day in relation to nothing in particular, I call it out and embrace it with total abandon. This is an instance where my soft side is not as effective as the strong part of me. And that is where I am now. Instead of trying to hide, or comfort myself, I am challenging the anxiety to bring it hard. :-) It's a fun way to look at it and it is working for me so far.”

So possibly the next time you are finding yourself too consumed by thoughts in a restorative pose/class, it may be your inner warrior that takes your struggle to task. Possibly add retention to Ujayii Breathing or try using Breath of Fire. Benefits could be gained through Kriyas, inversions and heart openers, while incorporating plenty of twists to ring-out anger. Yoga offers many paths towards healing. May this help along the way.

Asana of the Month - Pigeon Pose

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

Yoga teacher and Yoga Journal columnist Natasha Rizopoulos writes that "some hip openers increase the external, or outward, rotation of the [thigh] bone in the hip socket. Others lengthen the psoas muscle, a primary hip flexor connecting the torso and legs that gets chronically shortened in our chair-bound society. Pigeon Pose is an extremely effective hip opener that addresses both areas, with the front leg working in external rotation and the back leg in position to stretch the psoas." To avoid injury, she suggests approaching Pigeon by first doing variations that will open the hips gradually and safely. Once your hips are open, you'll be more likely to be able to come into a well-balanced Pigeon Pose that benefits both your hips and lower back. With consistent practice, you may notice more ease in your lower body as you sit, walk, and stand.

Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (One-Legged King Pigeon Pose):
Eka = one
Pada = foot or leg
Raja = king
Kapota = pigeon or dove

Benefits (according to Yoga Journal):
• Stretches the thighs, groins and psoas, abdomen, chest and shoulders, and neck
• Stimulates the abdominal organs
• Opens the shoulders and chest
• Therapeutic for urinary disorders

Cautions/Contraindications:
• Sacroiliac injury
• Knee or ankle injury

Preparatory Poses:
• Baddha Konasana
• Bhujangasana
• Gomukhasana
• Utthita Parsvakonasana
• Utthita Trikonasana
• Virasana

november musings: coming hOMe

"Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn."

Elizabeth Lawrence

Happy November. It's a magical time of the year and the start of the holiday season. As I sat down to write this month's muse, I was reflecting on what an interesting year of changes and growth 2010 has been for me. Getting through two surgeries (torn rotator cuff + bone spur and arthritis in thumb), making major shifts in my yoga practice, and adjusting to a new part-time position at N Street Village for graduate studies, it's been a whirlwind of change and transition. When your rock is pulled out from under you, life shifts . . . and you search for new rocks or new ways of doing things.

Yoga has been my rock for 15ish years and my inability to practice as I know it has had intense effects on my mind, body, and spirit. When I was given the green light to return to yoga after my first surgery this spring, I was overwhelmed with emotion during the practice - truly filled with such gratitude for the ability to move in a way that my body has come to adore . . . and need! Then it was time for my second surgery complete with a pink cast. That's been off for a few weeks and my doctor said we'd chat about my return to weight bearing exercise on November 8. Yep, I've been counting down the days and it happens to be two days before I head to India to co-lead my first retreat there. Perfect timing! However, after a challenging day last Thursday, I knew I had to hit the mat. Sure it was a bit early, but I know to modify, my body was begging for it, and it was an *amazing* experience. Yoga truly is like coming home.

As a practitioner for almost 15 years and teacher for 11 years, yoga has become a way of life. I've tried to stay mindful of the foundation of yoga - yamas and niyamas - during my inability to practice physically as I know it and have developed a greater love for the practice of meditation and mindfulness. My practice has been more yin, restorative, very slow flow - all variations I adore, but I also miss my beloved chaturangas! That one is a long time coming, but I have hope mingled with a dash of patience.

The beauty of yoga is that we can practice it on the bus, in line at the bank, over Thanksgiving meal with family, AND on the yoga mat. As you move through this beautiful month, I encourage you to take time to sit still, watch the leaves turn, and reflect on your practice of yoga. What does it bring you? Do you notice shifts when you miss a practice? Does the mantra lokah samasta sukino bhavantu (Translation: May all beings everywhere be happy and free. May the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.) resonate with you and cause reflection during your everyday?

May November fill you with a sense of gratitude for the ability to move your body through the practice of yoga. It is truly a gift and we are grateful to have you sharing it with us at Tranquil Space.

Namaste,
Kimberly Wilson

Tranquil Space Boutique - Your Gift Giving Destination

My job as the boutique manager is lots of fun. I get to go shopping and search for new merchandise, open the boxes of as they arrive to the store, interact with all the wonderful people and contribute to the experience that is a part of Tranquil Space. It is equally important to keep our customers informed about what is going on in the boutique and ways to keep it fresh and new.

At Tranquil Space we pride ourselves in providing wonderful yoga, blissful spa treatments, one-of-a-kind ambiance and excellent customer service. I have been asked countless times how items are chosen for the boutique. We select high quality yoga gear and accessories, eco friendly gifts, clothing and cards from individuals as well as companies whose philosophies align with ours. As mentioned in the results of our retail survey, affordability is very high on our list of priorities. We try our best to keep this in mind when choosing new vendors. Each purchase contributes to a small business, an established company or an individual with an entrepreneurial spirit.

I am currently working on promotional materials that touch on the vision of the boutique and inform yogis and shoppers about the value of the choices made in our space. Please continue to send in your suggestions and comments as they inform us on how to make the Tranquil Space boutique your gift giving destination during the holiday season and year round.
