Teacher Feature - Hilary Wentz

For many of us, including myself, September through December is the busiest time of the year. It is also the time of the year that I tend to fall out of my routine. With the holiday season approaching, it can be difficult to juggle work/professional demands along with family/friend obligations. However, this remains the most important time of the year to practice yoga. It's typically much more challenging to have a consistent yoga practice during this time. However, while we may miss a yoga class here and there during this time, there are many other ways we can continue to practice yoga. As a reluctant type A, I like to remind myself of a few things during this time. After all, who wants to add more stress to an already stressful time of the year?

1. Regarding our yoga practice, consistency is more important than amount of time. When I'm reminded of this, it often brings about a sigh of relief! Being able to take a yoga class is certainly a luxurious treat and when incorporated, often the best time of the day. However, if we cannot carve out enough time in the day for a class, we can schedule in a little pocket of time (5, 10 or 15 minutes) to practice yoga on our mats at home. When I know my day will be busy and demanding, I often wake up a few minutes early and go straight to my mat. It's amazing how uttanasana (standing forward fold) can melt away stress and bring about a calm awareness to the body. Also, after practicing headstand, your body will feel energized much like that morning cup of coffee. Never underestimate the power of just a few poses on your mat!

2. Pranayama (breath) is very important! This is often the time of the year that my breath feels a bit shallow. To counter that feeling, I try to check in with myself throughout the day to tune into my breath. Even if it's just for 5 breaths. Much like in our yoga classes when we're reminded to reconnect to our breath, we can check in throughout the day to make sure we're breathing fully and completely. My 2 favorite breaths are dirga pranayama (3 part yogic breath) and nadi sodhana (alternate nostril breathing). Alternate nostril breathing is unique in that it creates a balance between the left and the right sides of our brain. Breathing through the right nostril activates the left side of the brain, and vice versa. I often use this breath when I'm feeling anxious or stressed. Within a few minutes, that feeling is dissolved and the stress seems to magically melt away!

3. Yamas and Niyamas play an active role this time of year. As some of us already know, there are, in fact, eight limbs of yoga. Asana (yoga postures) and Pranayama are just two of them. Yamas and Niyamas are two more limbs, and they are often known as the moral codes of yoga. Bringing awareness to these yamas and niyamas is extremely important in our practice of yoga, and what a fitting time of the year to start practicing them in our daily lives!

Yamas:
a. Ahimsa: non-violence
b. Satya: truthfulness
c. Asteya: non-stealing
d. Bramacharya: moderation
e. Aparigraha: non-possessiveness

Niyamas:
a. Saucha: cleanliness, purity
b. Santosha: contentment
c. Svadhyaya: self-study
d. Tapas: austerity
e. Isvarapranidhana: surrender

I hope that, through our practice of yoga, we can use these tools to carry us through the most magical time of the year!
I wish everyone a joyful and tranquil ending to another year!

Namaste,
Hilary

Team Player of the Month - Maggie Lonergan

I stumbled across Tranquil Space this past summer after moving to Arlington. I was looking for a new studio and TSA happened to be close to my house. I have always loved the concept of serendipity and I think that this was one of those moments. Having recently started a new job and moved to a new place, TS was able to provide stability in my life at a time of change.

I have learned so much from the TS community and have been able to find tranquility in my daily life. As an SA I hope that I am able to pay forward the calmness and focus that I have found at Tranquil Space.

Namaste,
Maggie

Yogi of the Month - Betty Welsh

I started my yoga journey a couple of years ago. Initially I was looking for more flexibility. As I continued to take classes and find my way to Tranquil Space, I realized there was a lot more to yoga than I had imagined. There was a change going on inside my body as well as outside. As I became more aware of the balance and peace evolving from yoga into my life, I found a strong desire to share this with others. So I started teacher training. I’m very excited to be a part of TT2 and learn how to empower others to reconnect with themselves, create balance and find health through yoga. Yoga has brought me an inner peace and wholeness I wasn’t aware of before, and for that I have Tranquil Space to thank! The teachers & entire staff at Tranquil Space provide an atmosphere that is so warm and inviting that it nurtures you to your core.

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” as the saying goes. This is one among many reasons that people choose massage, yoga, exercise, and eating right as important components of their lives. Not only can self-care prevent or delay debilitating conditions, these activities show that it can also be immensely enjoyable.

Western medicine has only recently begun to seriously incorporate preventative and “alternative” forms of health care. One factor preventing widespread integration of massage therapy into health care has been the lack of scientific evidence of its effectiveness in addressing health issues. Identifying a causal link between deep relaxation and immune system performance may yet take some time. However, there is a growing body of published studies that show remarkable effects of massage on physiology and body chemistry. A September 20 article in the New York Times describes a study in which subjects receiving Deep Tissue massage experienced significant decreases in cortisol, a well known stress hormone, and arginine vasopressin (which can lead to increased cortisol levels), as well as an increase in white blood cells. Other subjects in the study received “light massage” and experienced decreases in adrenal corticotropin, which stimulates the production of cortisol, and increases in oxytocin, which is a hormone associated with feelings of well-being.

The full benefits of massage therapy, and other forms of self-care, on the body, mind, and spirit may forever have elements of delicious mystery. But, you can bet the farm on this: The old wives’ tale about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure is no tall tale. So, go out and do some prevention today, and love every minute of it!

Schedule your ounce of prevention by calling the studio, 202-328-9642, as we have Swedish, deep tissue, prenatal and postnatal massage. In addition we have Reiki, Reflexology, pshychotherapy, and a Naturopathy.

    Introducing Cocoyogini Glass Mala Necklaces

If you know anything about Tranquil Space yogis, you know that we cater to an amazing group of people from all backgrounds and talents. One of those talented people is Carol Meyers. She's a sweet soul, blogger, supporter of the TS community, and entrepreneur.

We are featuring Carol's hand knotted glass mala necklaces in the boutique. Made with 108 beautiful glass pearls and faceted crystals that sparkle in the light.

What is a mala? After a little research I found out the word mala means garland. It is used to keep count while chanting or repeating a mantra. Malas may be made from various materials including gold, silver, crystals, sandalwood and other seeds. Carol's Cocoyogini necklaces come in ivory, pink and black glass pearls.

Why does the necklace contain 108 pearls? There are numerous answers to this question. My favorite explanation is that in traditional Buddhist belief, people have 108 afflictions. Six senses, multiplied by three reactions(positive, negative or indifferent), making 18 feelings. Each feeling can be attached or detached from pleasure, making 36 passions. All may manifest in the past, present of future. All combinations adding up to 108. Did you follow that?(6x3x2x3=108)

Be sure to take a look at Carol's display on the Eiffel Tower in the boutique and try on one of her beautiful handmade creations. You can also check out Carol's blog at cocoyogini.blogspot.com.

    Living Your Yoga

Every moment of your life is a moment of potential practice. – Judith Lasater

Many people think of yoga as a physical exercise full of various poses that may involve twisting into a pretzel. Yet the poses are only one of the eight limbs of yoga – a term that translates to “union.” Yoga is a lifestyle and sometimes life is full of twists, tribulations, and tranquility. By practicing the eight limbs below, you are able to find reflection, physical practice, and deep breathing.

    1. Yamas (guidelines for interacting with the world):  These five guidelines give insights into how to act toward others and include non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation, and greedlessness.
    2. Niyamas (guidelines for interacting with ourselves): These five guidelines focus on how you treat yourself and include purity, contentment, austerity, self-study, and letting go.
    3. Asana (poses): This is what we commonly refer to as yoga in the West – down dog, cobra, and lion’s pose! The physical practice of yoga is a great way to try to still the mind and open the body.
    4. Pranayama (breathwork): Breath control is a powerful tool during our daily lives. Notice how the breath becomes shallow when on deadline or waiting in a long line. Taking deep, full breaths is sure to have a calming effect.
    5. Pratayahara (withdrawal of senses): This concept encourages us to avoid reacting to everything around us. Picture yourself calm, collected, and compassionate in the middle of the mall the day after Thanksgiving.
    6. Dharana (concentration): This is the ability to be completely in the moment and focused on only one thing. Use mantras, breath, images, or even candles to help bring you into focus.
    7. Dhyana (meditation): Turn inward, release the mind, and focus on just being in that moment. Much easier said than done but it is a critical addition to the physical practice. It is said that yogis began practicing these fabulous poses to get ready for meditation.
    8. Samadhi (true bliss): This is the experience of wholeness when you are in the flow and feeling connected to all. Think inner peace, bliss, and overall freedom.

OMwork (homework with a yogic twist): Next time you find yourself debating next steps, making a challenging decision, or wondering how best to find balance, refer back to these eight limbs and find solace in this ancient wisdom. Namaste.

Tranquil Space Foundation Celebration THIS Thursday

Mingle off the mat. Do good. Make a difference.

Your attendance is requested to THIS Thursday's 4th Annual Tranquil Space Foundation Celebration. It is our annual fundraiser and a fun event with a guest speaker on everyday activism, Marq spinning fun tunes, vegetarian treats, and a goody bag for the first 50 attendees that includes a free class pass!

Wondering what Tranquil Space Foundation does? Here's a story of a recent participant in our program Tranquil Teens:

Michelle* is an amazing survivor.  Ridden by anxiety following a lifetime of sexual abuse, she vacillated between periods of depression and violent rages.  The sexual abuse left her bereft of self-esteem, so much that she could scarcely make eye contact during conversations.  Her emotional and behavioral instability resulted in repeated psychiatric hospitalizations and eventually residential treatment.

When I  learned about the Tranquil Teens Workshop, I immediately thought of Michelle.  In her fits of rage, she hardly knew where she was.  Her breath was absent.  She was ungrounded.  I contacted the Tranquil Space Foundation to see if they would be interested in working with Michelle and our residents.  They gracefully agreed to come to our long-term residential treatment center in Maryland.

On that Saturday morning our residents and girls from local therapeutic group homes converged to learn from Kimberly and her team.  Amongst the forty girls gathered, Michelle stood out.  She kept a quiet, attentive gaze as Kimberly led her through breathwork and relaxation exercises.  She eagerly opened her journal to note what she was thankful for—to feel safe and to be protected from her abuser.

Beginning with the Tranquil Teens Workshop, Michelle made friends with breathwork and journaling.  She began journaling about the horrors of childhood abuse.  She used breathwork to calm herself when she wanted to hurl her anger at innocent bystanders.  Recently Michelle began equine therapy.  Learning to ride a horse can be a daunting task for anyone, even more so when you have experienced this world as an abusive and dangerous place.  When we first arrived at the equine therapy farm, Michelle timidly walked towards the horses.  She turned to me and said “I’m scared”, I said “I know and that makes sense, but you know what you can do.  You can breathe.  Remember how to do your deep breathing?”  Looking up at me, making true eye contact, she said “like the yoga lady taught me?”  “Yes Michelle”, I said, “just like the yoga lady taught you.

As a therapist and yoga devotee, I see the amazing blend of leadership skills, yoga, and creativity that the Tranquil Space Foundation offers to girls across the DC metro region.  I’m deeply grateful.  On behalf of Michelle, and the other 39 girls, I would like to thank the Tranquil Space Foundation for their incredible work.  Namaste.
*Name of youth was changed to protect confidentiality

    What is in your supplement?

The estimated size of the US dietary supplement industry is $25 billion for 2010. That number is not particularly surprising when weekly advertisements tout a new supplement to cure everything from high cholesterol to diabetes.

So what happens when you do give in to these advertisements? Or, you decide to buy nutritional supplements based on another friend’s recommendation? What do you choose? Remember, you pay for what you get!

A few things to think about:

    1) Quality assurance
Sadly, not all vitamins are created equal. In fact, often times, there can be huge discrepancies in nutraceutical products with some being contaminated with heavy metals, solvents or chemicals.
Quality assurance is measured by authenticity – the ingredients on the label match the ingredients in the product; potency – the amount of each ingredient on the label is the minimum amount contained by the expiration date; and purity – the ingredients are free of fillers, additives, and contaminants.
The FDA recently established dietary supplement good manufacturing practices (GMPs), guidelines of general principles for manufacturers to keep products safe, effective, and free of contaminants. Third-party audits are carried out by organizations such as Natural Products Association (NPA), United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and/or National Sanitation Foundation (NSF).
In order to identify a higher quality supplement, look for companies that are GMP certified, or have their own in-house testing by conducting laboratory assays. It pays to know about the companies you are buying from.

    2) Can your body digest and assimilate the supplement?
It is possible to find vitamins and minerals in many different forms, with some being more bioavailable and better for digestion and absorption compared to others. A good example of this is vitamin E. The natural form of vitamin E your body can use is d-alpha tocopherol, though some companies opt for the cheap, synthetic version called dl-alpha tocopherol. It is always a good idea to take a look at the label and especially the fine print in order to fully understand what you are buying.
While you are looking at that label, you don’t want to see excessive non-organic mineral salts, such as chlorides, oxides, phosphates, and sulfates which are inexpensive and relatively non-absorbent. Instead, look for organic salt acids such as citrates, chelates, picolinates, and gluconates, which are the more absorbable forms to increase bioavailability.
A good way to test bioavailability at home is to see how quickly a tablet is able to disintegrate in solution. Supplements that dissolve quickly can be more available for absorption in your intestinal tract. Higher quality supplements will dissolve within 30 minutes.

    3) Extra things you didn’t know you were getting
Apart from the active ingredients listed on the label, companies use excipients – non-medicinal substances that are inactive but serve a role as fillers, binders, preservatives, lubricants, coating agents, or emulsifying agents.
The less number of excipients used, the better your product. Look for any number between 4-8 to ensure the required function of the supplement without sacrificing quality. Acceptable excipients are from only natural sources include: from plants – starches, sugars, cellulose; animal - lactose, gelatin, stearic acid; or minerals – calcium phosphate, silica.
Definitely avoid any supplement that contains artificial food colorings, which can cause allergies or have been shown to be carcinogenic. Look for D&C or FD&C on the label.

    4) Dosing – too much, not enough, or not at all?
It is very common for patients to come in with a list of supplements that they are taking because they heard that it is good for them. What often happens is the dosage of each supplement is not enough or maybe not even appropriate at all.
Relying on a label’s RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) value doesn’t guarantee optimal dosages, rather just the minimal amount to prevent disease. Therapeutic dosages are often many times higher than the RDA.
It is very important to disclose all dietary supplements to your doctor to get better guidance on dosage instructions. Naturopathic doctors are trained in nutritional and herbal supplementation as well as potential herb-drug interactions. If you have a preexisting condition, it would better to discuss supplement needs with your doctor, who can then guide you on dosage, timing, and your body’s nutritional needs.

Asana of the month - ardha chandrasana

Each month we choose a pose to focus on in every class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

Last month, we focused on Parivrtta Trikonasana (Revolved Triangle Pose)—a challenging standing pose (with a twist!). This month we’ll be exploring Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose)—a pose in which we work to cultivate balance and inner awareness. Utthita Trikonasana (Extended Triangle Pose) is traditionally both the entrance and the exit to Ardha Chandrasana and, indeed, Half Moon Pose is a little bit like a balancing version of Triangle Pose.

According to BKS Iyengar's Light on Yoga, Ardha Chandrasana tones the lower region of the spine and the nerves connected with the leg muscles and it strengthens the knees. Along with other standing poses, it can also serve to improve digestion.

    Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose):
    Ardha = Half
Candra = Glittering, shining, generally translated as "moon"
    Asana = Pose

    Benefits (according to yogajournal.com):
    • Strengthens the abdomen, ankles, thighs, buttocks, and spine
    • Stretches the groins, hamstrings, calves, shoulders, chest, and spine
    • Improves coordination and sense of balance
    • Helps relieve stress
    • Improves digestion

    Cautions/Contraindications:
    • headache or migraine
    • low blood pressure
** If neck vulnerability is present, don’t turn the head to look up. Instead, keep looking straight ahead and keep both sides of the neck even.

    Preparatory Poses:
    • Utthita Trikonasana (Extended Triangle Pose)
    • Utthita Parsvakonasana (Extended Side-Angle Pose)

    Start Your Holiday Gift List

Every year around this time you see the signs of the holidays. Halloween jack-o-lanterns, Thanksgiving turkeys, Hanukkah driedels, Christmas decorations and sales, Kwanzaa kinaras and more. Gentle reminders such as changes in weather, the need for long sleeves, the craving of warm soup, and subtle nudges that you should be making your holiday gift list.

I hate to be that guy but it's my job and the holiday season is right around the corner. It's never too early to begin thinking of what items to purchase for those special people in your life who have made your year bright.

We always have gifts for the yogi, such as clothing and accessories, props, and mats for their practice. If you want to deepen your yoga knowledge, why not choose from our selection of books.

Do you know someone that loves yummy smells? We've got you covered. Paddywax does it again with their winter garden candles and diffusers.

Also be sure to check out k. hall design's screen printed candles. They have been redesigned to make them easier to light, but still as beautiful as you may remember from last fall. Incense is also a great gift. Some favorite brands include Morning star Japanese incense, Surya, and Satya Sai Baba's world famous (and Kimberly's favorite) Nag Champa.

With the change of the seasons comes the launch of TranquiliT's line for fall. This years deep, rich colors are sure to be a hit. Below are a few photos of my favorites. Come in and find new pieces to feed your fashion craving.

I'll keep offering suggestions over the coming months and don't hesitate to let me know yours. You can send me your wish list at marq@tranquilspace.com. And watch for the annual gift guide coming very soon.

    Frolic into Fall: October Muse

"Autumn is a second spring where every leaf is a flower." - Albert Camus

Welcome to October and Happy 11 years Tranquil Space!

Today begins with crisp cool air and fallen leaves thanks to the rain over the past two days. Perfect autumn experience. This season beckons reflection and a deep desire to retreat as we begin to don layer upon layer. Let's welcome the chance to slow down.

A big thanks to Tim Mooney for handling last month's muse while I recovered from my second surgery of the year. Apparently my thumb joint was grossly misaligned and the surgeon blames it on an old injury. Going through a second surgery shortly after getting the approval to return to the mat after March's rotator cuff surgery, plus donning a pink cast for the past month, has been a continuous practice of patience and letting go. The stationary bike has become my friend.

As part of my second year of Master's in Social Work studies, I now have a part-time internship at N Street Village and am loving the experience. Working in an organization other than Tranquil Space for the first time in over a decade has been educational on many levels. However, I'm still struggling to balance TranquiliT, Tranquil Space, Tranquil Space Foundation, writing, teaching, and studying with care giving for my beloved pets and human relationships. I'm sure you, too, know that struggle!

Life is busy and this season gives us a chance to slow it all down. Consider canceling plans and staying in with a good book. Head to the Shenandoah mountains for a hike. Bike through Rock Creek park and carry a picnic. Nap under the canopy of falling leaves. Camp under the stars and make smores (yum!). Indulge in restorative or yummy yin yoga to balance out your vinyasa practice. Savor a soak in the tub.

Tranquil Space turns 11 years old this month and it's been such an incredible journey. From a deep desire to create community while hovering around a fireplace sipping homemade chai tea in my living room to our two locations in Dupont Circle and Arlington, I like to call the ongoing journey our "tranquilosophy."

May you indulge in a dose of tranquilosophy this month by indulging in the art of slowing down, being fully present with everyone you meet, taking deep breaths each day, and finding opportunities within life's struggles. The practice of yoga continues well beyond our sticky mat.

    Tranquilly yours,

The above image was sent to me from a teleclass participant who art journaled my top 8 tips for the new season.
It was so beautiful I had to share. Enjoy!
