September guest muse: tranquility is the watchword

Kimberly normally muses in this space, but she's currently recovering from her second (and final) surgery of the year to fix a nagging thumb joint. In the interests of sparing everyone pain medication-fueled creative writing (as entertaining as that might have been), we decided I should take the reins temporarily this month. We've got a busy September, but as always... tranquility is the watchword!

As we transition into fall this month, I'm reminded how it's always the ideal time to re-center as we leave behind the slower, dog days of summer. I love the change of pace, the cooler temperatures, and the chance to reconnect with people after many tend to scatter away from the DC area for the latter part of August. I'm happy to share some of the fun things we have to share with the Tranquil Space community in my favorite month of the year!

September marks our third anniversary in Arlington. It was quite the adventure moving and setting up the new space, and we're so happy to offer a larger space and expanded offerings to the Arlington community. If you haven't come by yet, you really should check it out. River Studio is the largest studio in the entire Tranquil Space universe, and we're slowly adding some extra touches. We have some great offerings coming to Arlington after Labor Day, including a new early morning class, plus a prenatal and restorative class. Check the Arlington schedule for more! Also, be sure to celebrate our new studio opening on Friday, September 17th. Stay tuned for more information!

We're gearing up for the launch of Advanced Teacher Training and the first fall Level 2 teacher training offering at the Dupont Circle studio... if you've ever thought about becoming a yoga teacher or deepening your practice, consider our teacher training program! Our faculty includes some of the great Tranquil Space teachers you know and love, and the groups for both ATT and TT2 are shaping up to be great!

You might have also noticed a big change at tranquilspace.com... we completely rebuilt the website from top to bottom, giving it a more modern look and better integrating the blog and other social media components. Lots more to come there too, so stay tuned!

Have a happy and healthy Labor Day weekend and stay dry... I hear there's a hurricane coming!

new york international gift fair: the lost post

Did you enjoy the daily blog postings during the gift fair? Now that I am settled back in to my routine and recounting my adventures, I noticed that I still have more information to share with my readers.

You may have noticed from previous posts that I am very fond of Dogeared jewelry. Our restock of chakra necklaces recently arrived as well as a few items from the successful Eat, Pray, Love line. Take a gander at the beaded karma necklace and earrings or the three wishes necklaces in silver or gold the next time you are in the studio. Dogeared has plenty of other jewelry that I hope we can bring into the boutique for the fall gift giving season. Check out the pics below from their booth at the gift fair. A special shout out to Jennifer, who is the sweetest rep a guy could have. I had a chance to meet her finally while in New York.

As we approach the fall, we make our shift from shorts to pants. Be Present practice pants for men should arrive soon and a fuller cut pant called the movement pant. Ladies, I always have you in mind and hopefully you'll like the colors of the agility pants that are coming soon.

I am constantly looking for cool items to stock in the boutique and ran across a cool water bottle made from glass and bamboo. More details will be forthcoming. Snacks are always a nice way to get a little energy before or after class. Keep your eyes peeled for healthy nuts from Colorado.

Talking to someone who regularly reads the blog, they reminded me that I had promised to take a picture of a fashionable woman during the gift show. I ran across a young lady who was decked out in a cute top that was made from aluminum soda tabs. Now that's a recycling fashionista!

And what would a trip to New York be without one celebrity citing. After a long day of walking the expansive convention center, I met a friend for drinks. We met up at Columbus Circle in the Upper West Side. As we began to say our good-byes, we noticed a town car pulling up in front of the Time Warner building. Out walked two attractive African-American women. They strutted casually towards the shopping and office facility. I recognized one of the women as Gayle King. If you don't know who she is, she's Oprah's bff. I unfortunately don't have a picture of her, so you'll have to take my word for it. She's definitely prettier in person than on TV.

And that's a wrap for this summer's international gift fair. Hope you enjoyed the ride and will join Kimberly and me on our trip in January. Pack your parka.

Here's the boutique picks for September: selections for men!

asana of the month - parivrtta trikonasana

Each month we choose a pose to focus on in every class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

Last month, we focused on twisting—an action that stimulates circulation and has a cleansing and refreshing effect on the torso organs and associated glands. This month we build upon that theme, with Parivrtta Trikonasana (Revolved Triangle Pose)—a challenging standing pose (with a twist!) that reflects our intention to remain firmly grounded amidst the shifting natural world, as the seasons begin their rapid transition from summer to fall.

Los Angeles-based yoga teacher and Yoga Journal columnist Natasha Rizopoulos reminds us that "[a]n important technique to learn for twists is an even distribution of the work required. The tendency for most of us is to twist where it's easy and avoid twisting where it's not. This usually means that you will overwork the neck, which is relatively mobile, and underwork the middle and upper back, parts of the spine that in many people are about as malleable and responsive as a block of cement. When you overwork an area that is already mobile and 'open,' you make it more vulnerable to injury. However, twists like Parivrtta Trikonasana can help you bring openness and awareness to the thoracic spine, which is often lethargic. Working an area that you might normally ignore creates a perfect opportunity to observe the body and mind in relationship to practice."

Parivrtta Trikonasana should be approached with respect and patience, and only after thoroughly warming up hips, hamstrings, groins, shoulders and spine.

Parivrtta Trikonasana (Revolved Triangle Pose):
Parivrtta = Revolved or turned around
Trikona = three-angle or triangle
Asana = Pose

Benefits (according to yogajournal.com):
* Strengthens and stretches the legs
* Stretches the hips and spine
* Opens the chest to improve breathing
* Relieves mild back pain
* Stimulates the abdominal organs
* Improves sense of balance

Cautions/Contraindications:
* hamstring injury
* sacroiliac issues
* back or spine injury
* neck vulnerability

Preparatory Poses:
* Uttanasana (Standing Forward Fold)
* Parsvottanasana (Intense Side Stretch Pose)
* Utthita Trikonasana (Extended Triangle Pose)
* Utthita Parsvakonasana (Extended Side-Angle Pose)
* Prasarita Padottanasana (Wide-Legged Forward Bend)

Song that Most Comes to Mind While in the Posture:
Neeraj Shridhar’s “Twist Song” from fave 2009 Bollywood film “Love Aaj Kal” (Love These Days). View the video.

team player of the month - carolina puente

I was beyond stressed, before starting at Tranquil Space last August and it all began with a seemingly simple question, what can I do to relax? A simple question I thought I could answer quickly, took me years to find and thankfully the answer found me, through my wonderful friend Gwen. She brought me to my first yoga class taught by Kimberly. After her class, I was able to answer my own question and knew that Tranquil Space truly is tranquil. It is a temple to tranquilly, which allows me to surrender and be present; two qualities I cherish and have found in classes, workshops, and teacher training. I am very grateful to be surrounded by Tranquil Space’s devoted yogi community and look forward to getting to know you all on & off the mat.

yogi of the month - miriam miller

Being a part of the Tranquil Space community has changed my life. I had always been curious about yoga, but it wasn't until I regularly started practicing at the studio that I learned how transformative yoga can truly be. Not only am I more physically healthy than I've ever been, but I am also a kinder, more patient and more compassionate person. I have all the wonderful men and women who teach, work and practice at Tranquil Space to thank, and I look forward to continuing to share in the gift of yoga with this truly amazing community.

Best,
Miriam

teacher feature - siobhan troy-carranza

As I make it to the half way point of my second pregnancy I am reminded that babies (and kids) are great teachers. They embody what we in yoga strive to achieve, being the present moment always. Babies do not focus on what happened five minutes ago let alone what occurred last week. They want your attention, to be fed, or diaper changed right now. One of my neighbor friends told me that even though she was the VP of big non-profit her daughter did not care one hoot what or who she was in the workplace; what she needed was her in that moment.

The trick is while our fast paced lives must look to the future world is to remember that this moment in time is the only one we are guaranteed to have. So as we approach the end of summer enjoy the moments of the warm sun, the butterflies, the lightening bugs, the lady bugs, and the sound of crickets. Let yourself stop to wonder at the beauty that lies in our world that we are too often rushing past.

spa spotlight - dr. nguyen

Five years ago I started as a yogi at Tranquil Space. Now I am honored to be part of the team in The Spa as a Naturopathic Doctor.

What pulled me in as a yogi, and kept me returning to Tranquil Space was the sense of community and like-minded individuals. Beyond the boundless benefits of yoga, I was reminded to honor and connect with purpose and intention while creating the space for gratitude and mindfulness. And of course, the attention to detail like cookies, tea, and lavender spray were icing on the cake.
When the opportunity came to join the Tranquil Space team, it was such an obvious decision and a blessing.

My focus as a doctor is to support each patient in his or her journey towards optimal cellular health to spiritual health. Optimal health is mental, emotional, and physical wellness, not merely an absence of disease. I use drug free treatments such as homeopathy, craniosacral therapy, botanical medicine, nutritional counseling, colon hydrotherapy, and lifestyle management.

In order to have a broad view of their background and to understand where they’re coming from, I devote ample time to hearing each patient’s story. It’s not just about what they have: headache, eczema, diabetes, hypertension, cancer. It is who they are. I treat people, not diseases.

My goal is for my patients to experience what it’s like to feel better – and then stay that way. How are they eating, working, resting, eliminating, sleeping, exercising, and feeling? With this information, I can then begin to see what needs support or balance.

Through patient education, I teach patients about how their bodies work, so that they are more empowered in making decisions that support wellness. Treatment plans are tailored to each individual – whether the concentration is on the more physical, mental, emotional, or energetic level. Most often than not, treatment involves supporting multiple levels.

I come to work every day in full gratitude that I am part of a community that embraces passion, innovation, creativity, and compassion. And the great thing is, now all I have to do is go downstairs to practice my yoga!

committing to your yoga

if you are like us, you love yoga. you love how it makes you feel, you love how you sleep after yoga, you love how you feel in the morning (well at least like it better) after yoga, you love the person you are when you are doing lots of yoga. there was a new study that finds a connection between yoga and mood. so why not commit to doing it more this year? august might not be the typical time for resolutions, but why not?

there are a couple more days left of tranquil spaces 1 year membership sale. yoga membership comes with unlimited yoga classes in both locations and free mat storage for a full year for $1200. you also get 15% off workshops, spa treatments, and boutique items. the pass will activate on the date of first use and be good for one year. please note that no other discounts apply; the membership is not refundable or transferable.

The Meat Lover's Meatless...

you may think of vegetarianism when you think of the yogi diet. certainly yogis tend to be health conscious and conscious of the impacts of their eating on the planet. but what if you just love meat? former ts yogi and food writer, kim o'donnel, is familiar with this dilemma. now living in seattle kim crafted an answer in the form of a new cookbook coming out in early september: the meat lover's meatless cookbook.  the idea is to inspire meat eaters to take a day off from meat once a week.  and to give them great food so they will enjoy doing it!

kim will be in DC sharing her new book in sept.  check her out at the events below and check her website for updates.

fall schedule in our river studio at arlington

thank you for all your fabulous feedback on what you'd like to see added in our survey.

per your request, look for an early morning class on tuesdays with jen, on-the-go offerings, prenatal with susanna, baby + me with mary catherine, plus a restorative class with mary catherine - the perfect finale to your weekend.

this *new* schedule starts after labor day weekend. namaste.

3 more weeks until the start of teacher training Level 1 Intensive!

Why teacher training at Tranquil Space?

"The Tranquil Space teacher training is a truly transformative experience and is both deeply demanding and richly supportive. The teaching team is world-class and the curriculum is comprehensive and creative. The training provides a holistic framework for exploring your teaching goals and your own yoga practice." - ts teacher training graduate.

"Although I never anticipated actually teaching yoga, I took teacher training in an effort to deepen my practice. I was hesitant, particularly because I didn't feel that my practice was "advanced" enough, nor did I feel that I had the time to devote to such an intense program on top of an already demanding job. But, every time I found myself on my mat for training, I knew I was where I belonged." - ts teacher training graduate.

new york international gift fair: day three

i am wrapping up my visit in new york and what an adventure it has been. i must amend my statement about my feet from my previous post. all the walking around has caught up to me and my little toes are tender, but i have walked almost every square inch of the javitz center including the newly opened addition called the javitz center north. this section housed the handmade designers collection. this area is dominated by exquisite and one of a kind jewelry, but you can also find, pottery, bags, toys, cards, gifts, and accessories all made by individuals from every corner of the country.

our good friends at bittersweet designs out of sante fe made the trip to the show and commented that they enjoyed the new space. as expected they had a spectacular booth space, full of their signature style. look for more of their vintage adjustable rings and mini composition books to arrive soon. enjoy the view of the new facility and the beautiful display of bittersweet designs.

after a quick snack and couple of tunes on my ipod, i took the shuttle bus from the javitz to piers 92 & 94. located on the hudson river this showroom and event space is near a path where you can see runners, bikers and rollerbladers all enjoying the stretch of terrain that traces the west side highway. pier 94 showcases the at home collection and it's where you can find just about anything you could need for your home or housewares store. pier 92 features new york's newest , and as you would expect from the name, it has the newest designers that new york has to offer. many of our favorites including earthlust made their debut at the piers. and we are happy that we made the little jaunt to be one of the first in the area to carry their bottles. below are a few examples of the booths in piers.

this has been a fun way to share the experience of the gift show with you. hopefully you have enjoyed our little 'trip' together. over the next few days, i will be gathering all the information that i have obtained at the show. my hope is to incorporate some of the new finds that were discovered. orders of your favorites will arrive shortly. our next visit will be in january and even more changes to the javitz center will be completed by then. as i exit the convention center doors the final time, i wave to the statue of jacob javitz and i say 'peace, see you in january'.

new york gift fair: day two

day two is now over and i am still sorting through the ailes, catalogs and other information that i have been gathering the past two days. my feet are feeling pretty good, but my brain on the other hand is full. i am missing my partner-in-buying, ms. wilson, but i am soldiering on.

sustainability and eco-consciousness are just as much a part of the gift fair as they are to us at the tranquil space boutique. there is a prominent display on the main floor of the javitz center that showcases some of the market's top eco-friendly products. some include items we currently carry to new brand names we may want to get familiar with. everything from shoes down to housewares. i've included a sample below.

earthlust water bottles

kio kio soaps from new zealand

there is quite a bit of area yet to be covered. tomorrow i will venture to the new york piers where many more surprises await me. i am sorry to report there are no pictures of fabulous outfits to share today, but hopefully my luck will change tomorrow. i mean, who doesn't love new york fashion?

today's post is short and to the point. i feel i am still looking for the elusive perfect gift to add to the boutique offerings. after i digest everything that i have seen thus far i will give you the final report and what i discover at the piers.

Tranquility Tip of the Month: Poses for the Lower Back

making the most of your massage

a massage works in wonderful ways, easing stress and pain, calming the nervous system, increasing circulation, loosening tight muscles, stimulating internal organs, and enhancing skin. massage feels good. of course, you want to hold on to that just-had-a-massage feeling -- total body relaxation, muscles relaxed and at ease, and fluid movement restored -- for as long as possible.

but how long that bliss lasts depends on the state of your body. if you're suffering from chronic pain or recovering from injury, then it may take more sessions before optimal health is restored.

if massage is part of your regular health regimen, then it's more likely the effects will endure. in other words, the effects of massage are cumulative, like any healthy habit. the more often you get a massage, the greater and longer-lasting the benefits.

frequency: how often you receive massage depends on why you're seeking massage. in dealing with the general tension of everyday commutes, computer work, and time demands, a monthly massage may be enough to sustain you. on the other hand, if you're seeking massage for chronic pain, you may need regular treatments every week or two. or if you're addressing an acute injury or dealing with high levels of stress, you may need more frequent sessions. your situation will dictate the optimum time between treatments, and your practitioner will work with you to determine the best course of action.

you need to consider how you felt before the session and how you felt after, and then look at how long you maintain that; in general, experts say "regular" is preferable, but how regular depends on your situation. while daily massage would be delightful, practical considerations such as cost, time, and physical need likely determine the frequency of treatments. it's best to maintain a schedule, that way the body becomes conditioned and prepared for session at specific intervals.

maintenance: whether you get a massage weekly, monthly, or just every once in a while, the following habits can maximize and extend the afterglow of treatment.

water: one bit of advice you'll hear over and over again is to drink plenty of water after a massage. bodywork releases toxins, such as lactic acid and carbonic acid that need to be flushed from the body. massage also promotes circulation, increasing blood flow and oxygen and stimulating the lymphatic system, which helps rid the body of pathogens. after-massage hydration supports these functions, helping to eliminate released impurities, sooner rather than later.

stretching: another helpful habit is stretching between massages to maintain joint mobility, prevent muscles from tightening up again, and keeping the life energy flowing. this may mean doing yoga or whatever specific or full-body stretches suggested by your practitioner.

exercise: working out can also help maintain the benefits of massage, and this habit should be continually cultivated. however, if you're receiving massage therapy to help speed muscle strain recovery, you may need to ease up on the exercise for a while and give the body time to heal.

body awareness: after a massage, respect how your body feels. if your body seems to ask for rest, give in to that demand. this may mean backing off the to-do list, taking it easy, moving slower, and perhaps doing less for a while. and don't allow yourself to get fatigued because it will undermine the effects of massage. get sufficient sleep to allow the body to absorb the effects and regain vitality.

diet: finally, since you've just rid the body of toxins, support the body's renewed state by adhering to a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which will continue the detoxification process. lay off the espresso and all adrenaline-challenges for a time -- which would short-circuit relaxation anyway -- and enjoy the calm.

after receiving a massage, clients feel rejuvenated, relaxed, and refreshed. by opting for a few lifestyle choices, you can extend these benefits and get the most out of your massage.

new york international gift fair

twice a year kimberly and i make a journey to the 'big apple' to make purchases for the boutique at the new york international gift fair. i look forward to these trips as they open my eyes to what's out there and challenge me to bring on a new vendor or product. my idea was to bring you along on this trip so that you may understand what happens at the show.

the goal of these buying trips is to find new merchandise and reorder best sellers. the gift fair is held at the jacob javitz center, which is named after new york senator jacob k. javitz. the building has over 675,000 square feet of exhibition space and was recently renovated.

i hope you are ready to walk and packed your most comfortable walking shoes, because you are going to put your feet to the test. each aisle is filled with vendors from around the world, who have rented booth space showing the latest arrivals in their lines. anyone from large corporate names to small business owners are here with the hope of selling to retailers across the country and further.

boutique favorites such as papaya, curly girl, paddywax, earthlust and others are here to help us stock up for the final two quarters of the year. speaking of earthlust, i am very excited about the new designs of water bottles that are sure to be a hit. we also ordered more of the fantastic stainless steel bottle for children and replacement nipples. check out the pictures from the paddywax and earthlust booths.

one of my favorite things to do at the show is people watch. you have people from different backgrounds and cultures, how could it not be fun to people watch? as i was leaving one of the large aisles on the top floor of the convention center, i noticed a guy who was dressed rather snazzy. i could not let the opportunity pass, so i asked to snap a picture to share with my readers. here is ben of jonathan adler. ain't he cute?

here is a product that was new to me. it's called the vapur (the anti-bottle), which is a water bottle alternative. it's made of bpa free plastic and can be rolled, folded or flatted when empty. you can even freeze your tasty beverage and have it cold when you arrive at your destination. i'll have more information when i return, so stop me if you have any questions. what do you think of this new potential product? leave me a comment after the post. hope you have enjoyed our first day at the gift fair. more tomorrow.

august slips by...

bringing us closer to tranquil space's upcoming teacher trainings. if you are curious about becoming a yoga teacher, or just want to deepen your own practice check out what some past grads have said about teacher training at tranquil space:

"Teacher training changed my life for the better. I learned so much about asana, philosophy, breath work and how to find my voice as a teacher. I came away with an amazing community of yogis. The teachers are knowledgeable and each of them has their own style and specialty which enriches the training experience. I felt supported and challenged throughout teacher training. Even after training is over the support, the mentoring and growth continue. I recommend teacher training to any yogi looking for the next step in their yogic journey."

"TT [teacher training], for me, was not just about becoming a yoga teacher. it began a commitment to a process of peeling back layers. a revealing process. a path of remembering. reconnecting with true self. my higher self. TT marks a bright line in my life where i began to see that there was no other way to live my life but as a yogini-- with a vivid awareness, a focus on compassion, and continual self-discovery. and then, at the end of TT, i also happened to become certified to teach yoga!"

"All I can say is that if you are interested in teacher training, even if it's just to expand your knowledge about the practice of yoga, go for it! You're not too old - I will be 47 when I finish my 200 hr certification. You're not too busy - I have a 40+ hour work week and family. The training can also be completed over 2 sessions if that fits your schedule. And you don't have to be able to turn your body into a pretzel - I certainly can't! But I can do more now! You just need to show up with an open mind and an open heart."
