asana of the month: marichyasana III

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

According to Yoga Journal, "Marichi is the son of Brahma and chief of the Maruts (shining ones), the war-like storm gods. He's one of the seven (sometimes 10 or 12) seers (rishis) or lords of creation (prajapatis), who intuitively 'see' and declare the divine law of the universe (dharma). Marichi is the great-grandfather of Manu (man, thinking, intelligent), the Vedic Adam and the 'father' of humanity." Claudia Cummins, an Ohio-based yoga teacher and Yoga Journal columnist calls Marichyasana III "[o]ne of the most exquisite and refreshing of all yoga postures [that] serves as a balm for tight shoulders, achy backs, sluggish digestion, and stifled breathing. It leaves us balanced, rejuvenated, and ready for the day ahead.” When teaching the pose, she counsels her students to "breathe gently, soften the inner organs, and enjoy the juicy vibrancy that Marichyasana III offers … Let Marichyasana III wring everything that is inessential out of you," she urges.

Marichyasana III (Marichi's Pose No. III):
Marichi = literally means a ray of light (of the sun or moon)

Benefits (according to Yoga Journal):
• Massages the abdominal organs, including the liver and kidneys
• Calms the brain and helps relieve stress and mild depression
• Stretches the shoulders
• Stimulates the brain
• Relieves mild backache and hip pain
• Strengthens and stretches the spine
• Potential therapeutic applications for: constipation, digestive problems, sciatica, asthma, fatigue, lower backache, menstrual discomfort

Cautions/Contraindications:
• Serious back or spine injury
• High or low blood pressure
• Migraine
• Diarrhea
• Headache
• Insomnia

Preparatory Poses:
• Bharadvajasana (Standing Forward Fold)
• Gomukhasana (Cow-faced Pose)
• Janu Sirsasana (Head-to-Knee Forward Bend)
• Supta Padangusthasana (Reclined Big-Toe Stretch)
• Virasana (Hero's Pose)

Song that Most Comes to Mind While in the Posture:
Rockin' Sydney's "Squeeze That Thang"

teacher feature - todd dubenezic

wow, is it just me or has it been hot this summer? yes! weather likes this makes me want to jump in a pool. something i've been fortunate to do a lot this summer.

those of you who are familiar with ayurveda (the sister science to yoga focused on medicine) will know that there are 3 doshas. dosha means defect or that which tends to go out of balance. we all have one dosha that is more prominent but we are affected by all 3. the pitta dosha is comprised of the elements of fire and water. in the heat it's easier for people with a lot of pita energy to get overheated. i've been listening to my body and have changed my life to adjust to the hot weather we have been having.

i love to take and teach fast flowing and physically demanding yoga classes where i get to test my capabilities and see what's possible. in these classes i get really hot and sweaty. due to the heat this summer i have brought in more meditation and slower flow yoga classes into my practice. when i do get hot in terms of my temper i've been able to recognize what's happening and take some cooling action. this has been extremely powerful for me and something i've been sharing with my students.

i've been eating soy ice cream too which is an indulgence i love on a hot day. with ice cream or any indulgence i know i need to find balance. it's great to indulge once in a while and i know that my actions have consequences so i mindfully make choices to bring balance into my lifestyle. this is a great lesson for life off the yoga mat.

yoga teaches us that we all have an inner teacher within us. sometimes it just takes slowing down a little so that we can hear that voice and follow the wisdom within us.

please wear sun screen and stay cool!

retail survey results

the results from our first ever retail survey are in. thanks to all who participated. this information will inform our upcoming buying trip in new york and reorders in the future.

more than 70% of you said that yoga gear (mats, bags, clothing) was your favorite category of merchandise followed by women's clothing and books. over 90% responded that you would not purchase non-yoga clothing.

one of the goals of the boutique is to be a gift giving destination and 66% of all survey participants would absolutely purchase a gift in the boutique.

it's great to know that 75% of survey participants read the boutique blog posts. 56% of you read the holiday gift guide. we hope to revamp the gift guide this year and make it even better this season. the shock was that only 12% responded that they had made a purchase after reading about it on the blog. how can we change that?

we asked readers to let us know where else they purchase yoga related items. the overwhelming response was lululemon. some asked to carry their items in the boutique. unfortunately, we are unable to do so because they have their own retail locations. many of our shoppers purchase merchandise online at various retailers.

many things are taken into consideration when it comes to the choices of items that we carry in the boutique. this includes order minimums, cost, display, and feedback from you. we are always looking for unique, eco friendly merchandise. this may include individuals or new companies with great products that align with our philosophy.

we listen to our customers and affordability is on the top of the list. suggestions come in all the time for new products but, if we feel the price will be too high, it may not make it onto our shelves. one reason we no longer stock be present shorts for men is that too many guys did not want to spend that much on shorts. we continue to try other avenues and look at the results.

we have chosen the 10 lucky winners who get to choose from a goodie bag of boutique offerings. they will be contacted this week.

later this month i will be attending the new york international gift fair. i will be posting daily about all the wonderful things i have seen and hope to get our readers feedback. be sure to send your comments so that you can help be the 'buyer' of the boutique.

thai massage

ah -- summertime (read with porgy bess' longing, drawn-out melody)! the washington post reminded me last weekend that it's "half-time", so half of this precious time is gone, but then again, the "second sequel" (as last week's wp weekend section announced) is still to be lived (insert sigh of relief here).

somewhere (i honestly don't recall where, so i hope this admission prevents me from getting sued for plagiarism) i recently read that summer is the time of freedom, the time to do things differently.

ever thought of getting a thai massage? eh, don't know what it is?

well, the spa menu on the ts website can help you out: thai yoga bodywork is a healing art that is both dynamic and relaxing. it combines massage, assisted yoga poses, acupressure, and energy work to unblock energy, relieve tension, and increase our body's natural ability to heal itself.

it's a great thing to do, if you have never received a massage. for one, you can leave your clothes on :), but it's also gentle and yet profound and i often hear from the front desk that people leave with a glow and a big smile on their face.

it's a great thing to do, if you have always received regular (swedish/deep tissue) massages. for one, that smile and glow is not reserved exclusively for massage newbies and could be yours as well; but you may also enjoy the combination of bodywork with movement and different postures. and it will surely target this nagging tension in your shoulders and upper back as well.

so, maybe i'll see some of you on the (thai yoga) mat soon?

august muse: finding tranquility within

There is no need to go to India or anywhere else to find peace. You will find that deep
place of silence right in your room, your garden or even your bathtub.
– Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Namaste. Welcome to sultry august in our nation's capital.

Crazy enough, I'm heading to even *hotter* Texas for a 10-day Tranquilista book tour! I know, I know. Worst. planning. ever.

As we gear up with extreme excitement to unveil the new Tranquil Space Arlington on Monday at 7pm with the fabulous Dibora (woo-hoo!), Tim, Louis the pug, and I are also gearing up for the big adventure to the mid-west via car. This tour de Texas involves hauling back 30 organic cotton bolsters and 30 meditation cushions that my mother is busily making for the Arlington studio. Having these strapped to the top of the car should be an adventure in and of itself. Photos to come!

In addition to making oodles of yoga props, my poor parents are also blessed with the "privilege" of watching our beloved "son," Louis the pug while we galavant across San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and Dallas for TV and various book signing events. Look for entertaining stories and photos of this extravaganza via my blog.

As I gear up for a crazy next few days complete with finals (after Thursday, done with my first year of MSW!), moving studio spaces, hosting a bebe shower for the lovely eden, shipping oodles of TranquiliT (40% off sale through friday: code SUMMERTIME), prepping for the fall TranquiliT photo shoot - oh and the other daily to-dos, i'm loving the notion of finding peace. ommmmm.

the quote above is the perfect reminder that we find peace in the everyday. sure time off helps. yes, a vacation (ok, maybe not Texas in August) does the body good. indeed, a silent retreat is good for the soul. however, the beauty is finding silence among the chaos.

how do you find peace?

for me it's hot baths with LUSH products, naps, tea sipping, boundary setting, moisturizer, succulent summer fruit, journal writing, exercise, yoga, meditation, sleeping late, taking classes on exciting topics, lots of sleep, lit candles, more sleep (see a pattern?), and surrounding myself with positive people . . . to name a few.

the key is infusing a sprinkle of silence into your everyday. add it where you can. go to bed early. sit on your meditation cushion. do a sun salute. try legs up the wall. read under a tree. insert 15 more minutes between meetings to breath deeply and avoid rushing.

india is always an option, but let's start by finding tranquility within.

your soul will thank you.

namaste,
kimberly

team player of the month - khristyn brimmeier

as a type-a athlete with a little too much "pittsburgh" in her for her own good, for a long time i was a yoga skeptic, thinking it was just people sitting around humming with incense burning...that perspective changed greatly when a little over three years ago another tranquil spacer convinced me to go to class. i was immediately hooked. the yoga i found at tranquil space spoke to me, both on a physical and mental level, something i was in desperate need of at that time in my life. i jumped right in and 3 months into my practice spent a weekend at tt1 and have been practicing regularly ever since. i find now that when i have conversations with people about yoga i hear myself saying "i'm not sure how i ever functioned without it" or "i never realized how bad i felt before i did it" and it's true. i can’t imagine my life without yoga or the community, both the students and my fellow team players, that i've found at tranquil space!

yogi of the month - ellie ransom

i will be the first to admit that i came to yoga solely searching for a workout routine. i was fully skeptical of the spiritual side and the idea of yoga as a lifestyle. to me, an “om” was a measure of resistance, not a meditative chant. it was not until years later that i realized how lucky i was that tranquil space opened its new doors across the street from the back entrance to my apartment building at the exact time i was seeking out a studio.

it took just under two years for me to experience all of the benefits of a full yoga practice. during that time, tranquil space became a home for me. my body began to crave not only the physical aspects of yoga but the community of tranquil space. tranquil space offered me outlets for growth and exploration in practicing, teaching, breathing, eating and many other aspects of a yoga lifestyle. it became the place i went to clear my head when i was in the midst of making big decisions. i fell in love with certain teachers and their styles of practice. the teachers whose classes i regularly attended became people i could rely on to offer an hour and a half of guidance whenever i needed it. the friends i have made in this studio have become the biggest sources of encouragement in my life. this studio was the first place i always felt welcome in dc and it brightens my day every time i walk in. tranquil space is the place i go when i need to see a friendly or familiar face in an overwhelming city.

it is obvious that i ended up with so much more than just a workout.

Long-time front desk diva, Linda, is donning her TS tee in front of the Lord Shanmuga at a monastery in Kauai. She describes it as "a magical experience! We were under a HUGE banyan tree. tranquil space yoga at saint elizabeth’s hospital

since march 2009, a group of volunteers from tranquil space yoga studio has taught yoga each week to women at saint elizabeth’s hospital in southeast d.c. founded in 1855, saint elizabeth’s’ is the state mental hospital for the district of columbia. the volunteers work with women who have a serious mental illness, in addition to being survivors of trauma.

living with a mental illness – knowing that your mind isn’t yours to control -- is stressful and frightening. and as victims of abuse, our women’s bodies have also been used against them. much of the treatment offered to these ladies is dependent on medications, some of which have uncomfortable side effects. yoga is an important and different kind of therapy. it returns control of their bodies to them. it involves teachers who touch them respectfully and therapeutically. it enhances their mental health by affecting their moods and sense of self. plus, as yoga students the women learn to be receptive to their instructor’s input. this can make it possible for them to open themselves to other people’s input, including their therapist’s.

we have noticed that participants have a more positive outlook at the end of a yoga session. they smile as they share the cup of mint tea that closes each session. when you consider their circumstances – seriously ill and confined to an institution – a positive outlook is an amazing outcome, and a testimony to the power of yoga for improved health.

- maureen jais-mick, director of community outreach and volunteer services, saint elizabeth’s hospital

testimonials from tranquil space teacher volunteers:

"the yoga is working"- that is what i hear each time i teach yoga at st. e's from one of the ladies that lives there. it's amazing to see how just a few minutes of simple exercises and personalized care and attention can be appreciated so much. – amy herrick

i always look forward to teaching at st. elizabeth’s, and although the group i have been teaching has been small, to see the women devote time and effort to learning more about yoga; to hear them talk about not only individual poses they practice during the week but also the peace of mind that yoga brings them in their everyday life, is especially rewarding. i learn from them and always look forward to chatting with them when staff serve tea afterward. – anne gasque

in so many ways, working with the ladies of seh help me to do the same things - relate differently and innovatively to my world through a shared energetic experience on the yoga mat. i learn so much about the world in which our yoginis at seh live when i visit, and it encourages me to appreciate the differences in people, and to understand that we all have important and varied stories to tell. - dave kidney

i’m privileged to have had the opportunity to teach at st. elizabeth’s since 3/28/09. kudos to dave kidney, who set this program up for teachers in training at tranquil space with the hope that we would create a legacy of local community service that would bring in new teachers who serve and grow with this diverse group of women in need of some tranquility. we’re all delighted to meet and bring it to them. – kelly tobin

nourish yourself while traveling

you're doing so well – you're exercising, drinking water, sleeping sound at night, waking refreshed, and – then you go on vacation.

your vacation is meant to be fun – you overindulge, drink alcoholic beverages, stop exercising, sleep late, and end up with weight gain and feeling like you need a vacation from your vacation.

so how do you maintain your healthy state while traveling? here are five tips that will help you stay on course:

1) pack snacks for the transport
whether you're traveling by car, bus, rail, or plane, you're bound to have a handy shoulder sack that can hold a few nutritious snacks in ziploc bags. look for healthy treats that provide protein and fiber, which helps to keep your blood sugar and energy stabilized to decrease cravings and mood swings. smart snacks will also keep you satisfied so you don't veer toward fast food joints or vending machines which are havens for foods high in sugar, fat, and calories.

• trail mix: you can make your own by combining almonds, walnuts, pecans, cacao nibs, dried apricots, blueberries, and coconut.
• fruit: berries, grapes, orange; cut up apples, pears, mango, papaya.
• beef, venison or turkey jerky.
• protein shake: if you have a big canister of protein powder you can opt to take it with you, or just divide single servings into ziploc bags and carry the amount that you need.
• protein bars: nutritious protein bars include: balance, cliff, think thin, and zone.

2) choose wisely when dining out
put a little effort in researching healthy dining options near the place where you are staying. using a great online tool like yelp makes the job even easier. explore menus and decide ahead of time where you would like to eat so you're not opting for the tempting fast food chains that are conveniently located right off highway exits and next to hotels.

if you find yourself in a group where someone else has chosen the restaurant, choose grilled fish, meats and veggies; whole grains like quinoa or brown rice; and spinach or arugula salads, and soups vs. the fried foods, creamy pastas, and cheese laden meals that will surely taste good but are low in nutrients and fiber.

3) recognize portion distortion
since portion sizes have increased over the years, take a moment and look at what is being served before you take that first bite. if it looks like it can feed two, it probably can. divide your plate in halves and eat one side first. take a break and talk with your friends. if you still find yourself hungry, then eat a little more.

the point is to “check in” with your body by giving yourself a break from eating and look for your signals of satiety – the state of being full. if that voice in your head (that suspiciously sounds like your mom) is telling you to “eat everything on your plate,” kindly ignore it and pack the leftover half “to go” and eat it the following day. avoid the need to have to carry your stomach out of the restaurant.

4) don't forget your water
it happens every time. for some reason, when traveling, the easiest thing to do is forget about the vitally important liquid that makes up almost 70% of the human body. especially when traveling by plane, it is extremely easy to get dehydrated in aircraft cabins that are not always properly humidified. this can be avoided by following the rule of drinking half your body weight in ounces – every day. carry your own water bottle while you're out and about and remember it's ok to have to urinate. it's one of your body's important ways of flushing out toxins.

5) fit in time for movement
while on vacation, explore your new surroundings by foot or bike. plan a hike or take the opportunity to visit the nearest yoga studio. body movement is great to maintain energy levels, increase vitality and mental clarity. not to mention, if you did happen to eat a few bites of french fries, it only benefits you to work those calories off.

at the end of the day, you are on vacation. relax and enjoy it. just remember to eat and live in moderation. if you indulge a little too much, then tomorrow will give you an opportunity to start off on a better foot.
oh, and don't forget your sunscreen!

    tranquil space adopts a farmyard...

as many of our yogis know, kimberly is a great lover of animals small and large. she recently supported the farm sanctuary in their adopt-a-farm program. below is the story of one of the adopted animals. you can read about more adopted animals here.

"button's mother, winona, and seven other rabbits were rescued from a would-be breeder who confined the animals in filthy, bare wire cages in her backyard in new york. the rabbits lived in crowded two-foot by one-foot cages, exposed to the elements, and lying in their own feces and urine. they were routinely left outside without cover in snowstorms, rainstorms, and hot weather. their cages were rarely cleaned – sometimes filled with almost four inches of rabbit waste – and were never padded with more than a few handfuls of straw. the "owner" of the rabbits did not provide them with regular access to food or water, leaving them dehydrated and hungry. the woman stated that she had originally purchased the rabbits as pets for her kids, but was now breeding them to make money. thankfully, a concerned neighbor noticed that the bunnies were suffering. she kept an eye on the rabbits for several months, going over in the middle of the night to feed them, change their bedding, and provide them with fresh water whenever possible. she tried to reason with the woman and teach her about basic rabbit care without causing the woman to forbid her access to the rabbits. horrified by the conditions the rabbits were living in and by the "owner's" intentions to sell the sickly animals, the rabbits' kind rescuer tried repeatedly to convince the "owner" to give them up. finally, the breeder agreed to abandon her newfound trade and surrendered the animals to her neighbor, who delivered them safely to farm sanctuary. since there are no laws protecting rabbits from this type of treatment, without the intervention of a caring person, these rabbits would have continued to suffer. the three adult rabbits and five babies immediately fell in love with their new home, and they all are living the good life at our new york shelter. winona, who was very pregnant when she arrived at farm sanctuary, gave birth to button and four other babies. now, all 13 bunnies are living the good life at our new york shelter. happy to be free, they spend their days munching on fresh veggies, snuggling in clean straw, and hopping wildly through their barn."

summertime – and the living is easy!

george gershwin probably had no idea that he was packing ancient ayurvedic wisdom into the well-known aria he composed for porgy and bess. and yet he captured ever so aptly the essence of what ayurveda, and even our traditional life patterns “here in the west”, express about balancing pitta dosha which reaches its peak during the warmest season of the year. take it easy, chill out, relax, have fun, play.

both as seasonal rhythm as well as in our overall life patterns, taking time to chill has an immensely important and often-undervalued place. when we relax, another part of our nervous system, also called the parasympathetic nervous system, takes over. it regulates things such as heart beat and breathing (slow down), digestion (increases) and blood flow to superficial muscles and brain (decrease). and yet, most of us, often even in our summer activities, stay in the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for opposite processes: heart beat and breathing (speed up), digestion (decreases) and blood flow to superficial muscles and brain (increase).
as you can imagine, this cannot be a good long-term solution. after all, all the wonderful summer food that nature offers us still wants to be digested, no?

so, do make sure that when you chill out and lighten up in the summer, that you really give yourself permission to take it easy. sometimes that’s hard to make happen, especially if you, like most washingtonians, have a tendency to be intense and ambitious. but maybe creating situations that invite a sense of lightening up and chilling out can be a first start. getting out in nature, getting a massage, taking a restorative or yin/yang yoga classes are some great starts!

    july's muse: sprinkles on top

" to live fully, outwardly and inwardly, not to ignore external reality for the sake of the inner life, or the reverse -- that's quite a task."
    - etty hillesum

welcome to july and a brief relief from summer's sultry weather. i hope you have lots of tranquility planned over the holiday weekend.

yesterday was my 37th birthday. my how time flies. i can recall the excitement i had as a young girl awaiting the homemade strawberry cake to come out of the oven. my favorite part: adding the sprinkles on top. this is a great metaphor for life.

a few years ago a colleague encouraged me to use my birthday for svadyaya (reflection) by listing highlights that transpired over the past year and what i hoped to see for myself by my birthday the following year. i've followed it religiously since and wanted to share a snippet of my recent journal writing at a cafe:

    highlights since june 30, 2009
    tranquilista hit shelves
    started MSW program
    shoulder surgery (le sigh)
indulged in yoga + buddhism retreat (divine!)
cut hair to bob and donated 8 inches to locks of love
tranquil space turned 10 years old
    began column for care2.com
got a hammock for mid-afternoon naps
    returned to gardening
    two west coast book tours
signed lease on new tranquil space arlington hOMe (opens august)
adopted a barnyard through farm sanctuary

    dreams for june 30, 2011
    explore india
    texas tranquilista book tour
tranquil space arlington grand opening soiree
    half way through MSW program
    silent meditation retreat
    compost
create value-based annual check-ins for tranquil space team
co-lead 4 inspiring tranquil teens programs
    handstand
    conference keynote speaker
publish tranquilology: a collection of my blog posts sprinkled with illustrations

my birthday started with a 1.5 hour manager meeting complete with scones and cupcakes (thanks, siobhan!) and included my very first yoga class in 90 days (but, who's counting?). it felt divine to be back on the mat. truly like coming hOMe. to top off the day i headed to the strathmore to bask in music, belly laughs, and friends.

as i bring this month's muse to a close, i wanted to encourage you to explore a way to find sprinkles on top. we're halfway through the year and 2010 continues to be full of possibility. why not indulge it with dashes of tranquility? a few ideas: savor summer fruits, visit an animal sanctuary, dabble in restorative yoga, browse your local farmer's market, volunteer, muse in your journal, start an etsy store, plant an herb garden and add fresh mint to your h2o, take a nap.

thank you joining me on this journey. may july bring you moments of inner and outer tranquility topped with sprinkles. live fully. namaste.

    tranquilly yours,
    kimberly wilson

    what's new pussycat?

summer is upon us and a few new things have found their way into the tranquil space boutique. we all need to beat the heat and that includes our little ones. check out the new stainless steel birds & bees sippy cups from earthlust. these 7 ounce beauties are great for infants to toddlers and helps with the transition between bottle and sippy. the unbreakable bottle is also great for the environment as you only have to replace the nipple when it shows signs of wear.

are pearls too expensive for your budget? try one of the colorful necklaces from paper to pearls and support women and children in uganda. the wonderful 'gems' are great as a gift or for yourself. the 'pearls' are made from magazine paper rolled into beads and covered in a non toxic laquer. they come in several styles including a multi-colored single strand, a large bead single strand, and three and four stands.

many of you have enjoyed the dried mangos from peeled snacks. we wanted to add some salty to the sweet with the introduction of almonds and cashews. tasty on their own or paired with the dried fruit.

we just sent out our first retail survey to our shoppers. if you would like to participate, click here and have the chance to be one of 10 lucky randomly chosen winners to choose from a grab bag of boutique goodies.
