july asana of the month: one leg folded back pose

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

in this posture, the "trianga" (the "three limbs, or parts thereof") are the feet, knees, and buttocks. the term "mukhaikapada" (a compound of three words, mukha = face, eka = one, and pāda = leg or foot) corresponds to the face (or mouth) touching one (extended) leg. in paschimottanasana, the entire back of the body is stretched intensely. according to bks iyengar’s light on yoga, trianga mukhaikapada paschimottanasana tones the abdominal organs and keeps them free from sluggishness, and also helps keep the abdominal muscles in shape.

trianga mukhaikapada paschimottanasana (three-limbed forward bend):
trianga = hree-limbs (or parts thereof)
mukha = face
eka = one
pada = leg or foot

benefits (according to light on yoga):
* recommended for persons suffering from dropped arches and flat feet
* cures sprains in the ankle and knee, and any swelling in the leg is reduced
* tones the abdominal organs and keeps them free from sluggishness

cautions/contraindications:
* may be contraindicated for certain individuals with back pain
* knee or ankle injury

preparatory poses:
balasana
uttanasana
supta padangustasana
janu sirsasana
paschimottanasana
virasana

song that most comes to mind while in the posture:
garbage's "tell me where it hurts"

teacher feature - dibora amanuel

practicing yoga is like spending time on a fun, creative project with no ending in sight; there seems to be infinite opportunities for making new discoveries and for finding inspiration. and just like a favorite creative project, progress and insights gained along the way emerge as pleasant surprises, and much less like goals. as i steadily make my way in my yoga practice, i've come to notice and appreciate that at the end of each practice, i'll undoubtedly step off my mat with replenished excitement and commitment to yoga.

team player of the month - shizuka sugihara

it's always nice to have a place where you can feel at home.

i came to dc from japan almost 5 years ago, with my husband's company's assignment. the first year was tough, i had rarely driven in tokyo but had to here and my 4 year old son was always crying because he missed people in japan and couldn't understand what people were saying.

i found tranquil space bethesda at that time. the first class i took was unforgettable. i liked siobhan, and the friendly environment, cookies, boutique etc. it was so fancy and filled with a happy vibe. i really appreciated a place where i could simply return to myself.

when my son's english became better and there was no worry about him, i thought i need to take a leap. so i took one of kimberly's retreats and that challenged me to take teacher training (tt2). that was a life changing experience and i made a lot of wonderful friends in this community. as my training went, it became clear what i was up for: supporting and sharing yoga with women and kids.

last year i happily started to assist carol's "baby and me" twice a week. i am always proud to work for tranquil space and learn from carol. i feel very relaxed and at home when i assist & chat with the wonderful moms and babies. the moms and babies are also my teachers. i have learned a lot from them! i feel great after assisting the babies and when i see moms and babies exiting the front door with happy faces, i'm ecstatic.

thank you tranquil space for giving me such a wonderful time in this country, and thank you for taking me in this blooming community!

yogi of the month - megan pierce

amidst the stress and exhaustion of a typical dc work day, i often find myself wishing i were at tranquil space where people are friendly and inviting, the surroundings peaceful, and where a hint of lavender hangs in the air – just thinking about it relaxes me! not only has tranquil space given me the gift of yoga and all its benefits the past three years, but the friends and teachers i’ve met through tranquil space are some of the most supportive and uplifting individuals i know. thank you to everyone who puts in so much time, work and love to make tranquil space a haven for the rest of us. i don’t know what i would do without it!

from the spa at tranquil space

some say it is therapy and some say it is wonderfully relaxing and rejuvenating. it is both and more. it is pregnancy massage and it is offered at the spa at tranquil space. the benefits of a massage during pregnancy are numerous: they range from stress reduction, to decreases in swelling of the fingers, hands, and feet to relief from pain in the back and hips.

there is also the emotional support that a pregnant woman receives from a massage that is invaluable. in addition to her body changing, the hormones of a new mom to be are constantly cycling. touch, especially by someone who is trained to understand both the physiological and emotional changes happening, can helps to alleviate anxiety, stress and promote real relaxation.

at tranquil space, we have mom lie on her side on a massage table with comfy pillows supporting her. we massage her in a sidelying position so she is most comfortable and we have access to her entire body. afterwards we reposition her into a reclining-like position so we can work on her neck, shoulders, head and face. this also gives her a chance to lie on her back without any risk to the baby – something she may be missing.

massage is one of nature’s true pleasures, but medically researchers have found that massage during pregnancy has concrete health benefits. dr. tiffany fields has studied the effects of massage during pregnancy and has reported that pregnant women slept better at night, suffered less back pain, had a drecreased production of the stress hormone coritsol, and reduced the likelihood of premature delivery.

yoga helps create compassionate towards the body

through yoga, you can re- create a relationship with the body. in each pose, your attention is drawn not to how you look in your tights, but to whether you feel tight hamstrings or an imbalance in the alignment of your hips. yoga, "helps you have an objective awareness of the body."

"it's very here, very now, how you stand on the earth, how the position of the body feels on the mat," says sell, a certified anusara yoga instructor. "if you're focusing on the immediacy of the body's sensations and the steadiness of the breath, then the attention rests inside the body as it is, rather than in the mind and its projections and images about what is."

"getting that mental focus to pay attention to what's going on with the body helps you to get in touch from the inside out, once you get control of the body, and of finding the right muscles to put the body into the positions, you realize you can control other things in life."

words of wisdom

pink palace photo by sally mannix

today i woke up to my vibrating phone (that i'd left on a hardwood floor so it was quite the wake up) well before calls should be allowed. i was still in a deep slumber dreaming about college days and the challenges of dating. ugh. not the perfect start to my week.

i stumbled into the kitchen to feed my "starving" pug and make my green zen tea, then settled in front of my newly revived macbook air to handle an overdue email draft. i began to do my normal twitter checking while waiting for my email to load and i came across this tweet by karen maezen miller: "baby steps will get you anywhere if you don't stop stepping." http://bit.ly/bw6xgf. then i clicked on the link and found this great blog post.

i stopped in awe when i read the perfect mindfulness reminder:

“whatever you bring your attention to will flourish.”

this simple sentence struck me as the perfect reminder on how to start my week and, honestly, to live my life.

so i ask you, where is your attention right now on this beautiful monday morning?

25 ways to reuse your old yoga mat

what do you do with your old mat once you replace it ? thanks to jade yoga and jolene dimitroff of yoga tree in san francisco we are able to offer these 25 ways to reuse your mat.

1. Look for reuses www.freecycle.org

2. Use as a seat liner for the back seat in the car while taking your dog to the vet or groomer.

3. Place under an area rug for no-slip gripping.

4.Drop off your old mat at an animal rescue group. Most of these places need soft, durable mats, rugs, towels, & blankets to line crates.

5. Use an old mat in the garage or shop to keep from slipping on the workbench while using power tools on them.

6. Line kitchen shelves to prevent glasses from slipping and scratching.

7. Cut the mat into squares and use them as "bases" while playing baseball with the kids. Easy to carry and easy to clean!

8. Use to kneel on in the garden to protect your knees!

9. Use as kitchen drawer liners.

10. Cut it up to make a mouse pad.

11. Use it on the beach instead of a towel.

12. Use as grip pads to open jars.

13. Cut to size and use as foot pads for the bottom of furniture that is on a wood or ceramic floor. Glue on pieces with a non-toxic adhesive.

14. Place it under your sleeping bag as a sleeping pad while camping.

15. Make covers for sharp corners like in a parking garage or school.

16. No more messy packing peanuts! Old yoga mats get a new life as a protector of valuables while moving or shipping.

17. Make children's toys: cut holes and create masks, hats, costumes and props; cut into shapes and letters for tub and pool toys.

18.Cut and put down in front of the kitty litter box to stop the litter.

19. Plug up drafty places, windows, doors, & under window air conditioners, and save energy!

20. Great for those hard bleachers when watching sporting events.

21. Makes a great liner under house plants, you can even cut it to fit each plant!

22.Donate to nursing homes so that residents do not slip while getting in and out of bed.

23.Place between your surfboard & car to protect both from abrasion.

24.Lay it over the dashboard and steering wheel to keep the sun out!

25.Keep in the car for those spur of the moment picnics, keeping groceries from sliding around in the trunk, or for a myriad of other uses limited only to your imagination!

healthy eating at your doorstep

grow your own food. come on, just try it!

the simplicity of gardening reminds us to appreciate nature’s cycles. vegetable and herb gardening is a great way to relieve stress by spending time outdoors, and becoming more in sync with our food source. watching our very own food grow from seed or transplant, to blossom, then fruit is rewarding and gives a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

not only is having a garden of vegetable and culinary herbs cheaper than buying them at the store, there’s no gas involved in harvesting (ugh, let’s not even talk about that oil spill), and we are not wasteful since we only snip what is needed.

choosing to grow a rainbow of vegetables provides a variety of nutrients unzapped by chemical fertilizers and commercial pesticides. nothing beats the taste of a home grown tomato or squash.

as if freshness is not enough to partake in the delight of gardening, growing culinary herbs also gives us a natural medicine cabinet.

let’s look at a few herbs that can be easily grown in a container out on the door step.

basil: a wonderful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune boosting herb. it also aids in digestion. it can be used in salads, pesto, soups and sauces. steeping the dried herb in tea helps to soothe nerves and relieve depression.

mint: by far one of the easiest herbs to grow. mint also helps to relieve indigestion. sipping a cup of peppermint tea helps to settle a nauseous stomach, motion sickness or morning sickness. it has antispasmodic properties, making it effective for menstrual cramps. using a cool cloth soaked in peppermint tea also soothes a headache.

rosemary: beyond the common uses of rosemary in roasting chicken, turkey, lamb, and vegetables, it is also a supreme cardiac tonic that energizes the circulatory system. a rosemary infused tea can help to lower blood pressure. some of the constituents of rosemary are strong antioxidants, antiseptics, and anti-inflammatory. by promoting the flow of bile, it is also a great digestive tonic.

sage: mineral rich sage offers abundant calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and zine. it contains lots of antioxidants, flavonoids, and phytosterols. sage can also be used as a mouthwash to heal receding gums, mouth sores, and ulcers. for sore throats and tonsillitis, use sage infusion as a gargle.

thyme: in conjunction with sage, thyme can be added into an infusion as a gargle to relieve sore throat. it also possesses powerful antiseptic, antiparasitic, and antifungal properties making it great as a wash for skin infections.

as you can see, these are tremendous health benefits that are available at our doorstep. and the great thing is, it’s not too late to pick up a few vegetable plants or herbs from the nearest garden store.

i spoke with joe carmack from the local garden district. since it’s a bit late in the season to start from seed, this nursery offers a variety of established plants that are fairly easy to grow: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, squash, zucchini. all the edible plants are organic. other organic products include compost, fertilizer and pesticides. if you’re a garden novice, joe also offers consultations.

remember, all that plants really need are sun, water, food, and a little care. in return, your body will get a little loving.
