the bethesda studio

after five wonderful years in bethesda, tranquil space bethesda will be closing on sunday, march 14, 2010. this decision was carefully considered and we have decided to not renew our lease. we have seen growth in our tranquil space community in the metro area which has been very exciting and i will always cherish the memories and the people of the past five years.

life brings us many journeys, challenges, and many paths to choose. our paths cross others sometimes for a brief moment and sometimes for many years but everyone of those people touch our lives. many of you have touched my life more than you realize and i have learned so much from you that it can be hard to truly describe my gratitude. i hope that my path will continue to cross with yours and if not my hope is that i have been able to help you along your path.

i will continue to teach at dupont and look forward to seeing where my new path takes me, who i get to share it with and the new faces i will meet along the way. as the saying goes it is not the destination but the journey along the way. these past five years that have taught me so much about myself, my relationships, my strengths and weaknesses and while we move into our final few weeks i hope you will celebrate the journey we have shared together.

with much love and gratitude,

siobhan

yogi of the month - laura cohn

i started going to tranquil space back when kimberly taught classes at a church on 16th street. at the time, i was looking to reduce my work-induced stress. not being particularly athletic (or even remotely coordinated), i thought twisting myself into yoga poses would be so challenging that i would forget about work. given my limited athletic prowess, that turned out to be true. what i didn't expect was what came next. in the years since, the teachers at tranquil space have not only helped me master my down dog, they've provided an oasis of calm in this go-go, rushed world. in the end, i've found myself addicted to not just the regular yoga classes, but also the workshops, the 7 a.m. sessions, the pre-natal classes, and, best of all, the baby-and-me program. whether done at a church or at a swanky new studio, yoga at tranquil space will help you find a tranquil space.

book for march

the tranquil space book group will be reading less by marc lesser for our march book. i haven't read this book yet, but i feel like the idea of doing less and being present and mindful to enjoy what you are doing is something that has become more and more important to me. i think this book will be a fun quick read and provide some interesting thoughts for discussion. join us in the tea lounge to sip tea and ponder doing less on thursday, march 25 at 7pm.

get your yoga mudra swing on

Yoga Mudra Swing

How to
Begin in a stable standing position that is evenly rooted on both feet (mountain pose). Inhale, hook your thumbs, reach your arms forward and up toward the sky as you take a gentle backbend. Gaze toward your thumbs, scoop your tailbone, and round your upper and middle back slightly. Keep your lower back long without rounding and draw your tailbone toward your pubic bone. Activate your legs by lifting your kneecaps.

Exhale, bend your knees, interlace your hands, and sweep your arms over your head as you fold forward. Bring your clasped hands toward the floor and straighten your legs if it feels comfortable. If not, keep a slight bend in the knees to release any lower back tension. Continue this movement back and forth with your breath. Inhale into your gentle backbend, exhale into your forward fold. Repeat 5-20 times and relish in the awakening that this forward and backward movement of the spine generates.

Benefits
This pose strengthens your spine, opens your heart center, awakens your shoulders, and lengthens your hamstrings. Also, it provides a connection to the breath with gentle and fluid movement.

OMwork
Practice this yoga mudra swing during your yoga practice, by taking a mini break from a laborious meeting, or when getting ready to hit the slopes.

boutique refresh in tranquil space arlington

i had my first opportunity to see the tranquil space arlington studio. thanks to a suggestion from the lovely patricia cervini, to have me come and give their retail space a refresh.

tim drove and gave me a tour of the space. i brought over a few new products and moved a several items around. the lost & found has been moved to the floor below the coat area. books make a move up to the top of the cubbies, showcasing some of our favorite titles.

we hope this sprucing up gives our arlington peeps a fresh look and some fun new products. check out the pics below and keep the great suggestions coming.

yoga and wine: awakening the senses
friday, march 19 from 7:00 - 9:00pm

start with a 75 minute yoga practice designed to engage all of your senses and help you tune into the present moment. after class enjoy a complimentary guided wine tasting and experience tasting wine with all of your senses fully engaged. learn more about how to pair food and wine to make it a complete sensory experience and how to appreciate all of life’s little pleasures more fully. all levels beginners through advanced are welcome to attend. please note that tasting is completely complimentary and that all attendees must be 21 to attend.

yoga and wine: the power of 'terroir' and rooting down
saturday, march 20 from 1:00 - 3:00pm

focus on natural wines- biodynamic/organic/sustainable begin with a 75 minute yoga practice designed to help you feel grounded. in our yoga practice, as in life, when we begin to root down and really stand on our own two feet we begin to learn that our purpose is to express our true nature. in the same way, the vine roots down into the earth so that it can express the true nature of the earth that it is planted in. that true nature is ‘terroir’; a french word that loosely translates to “a taste of the earth”. after class enjoy a complementary wine tasting focusing on wines that express 'terroir'. learn more about what it means for a wine to be 'natural' and what the differences are between biodynamic, organic and sustainable wines. all levels beginners through advanced are welcome to attend. please note that tasting is completely complimentary and that all attendees must be 21 to attend.

how making time for life's little pleasures can help you live the good life
for tranquility immersion participants, friday, march 19, 6:00 - 6:45pm

how often have you rushed through your day to busy to stop for lunch, much less the little joys of every day life? in this 45 minute talk we will discuss ways to learn to appreciate the everyday pleasures of life more fully. we will do a short reading from frances mayes newest book "every day in tuscany" about the transformative power of life's little pleasures, like food and wine. we will also taste a bite of vosges chocolate as part of a mindfulness meditation exercise helping you to learn to take joy in the little moments.

spring is on the horizon: essential oils for surviving the chill in the meantime

by the time the end of february rolls around (and particularly the kind of february we've had this year), it's easy to get antsy in anticipation of spring, and just as easy to fall into a funk at the realization that a solid month or so of winter still lies ahead. a simple and effective way to gently nudge yourself through the next few weeks is to utilize essential oils, which, depending on the oils that are used and how, can both ground you and lift your spirits.
citrus oils are quite effective in combating winter blahs. try putting a few drops in the palm of your hand and running it through your hair, or using a diffuser throughout your home. if you don't own an essential oil diffuser, a drop of oil on a light bulb, a few drops on the inside of an air filter, or a few cotton balls sprinkled with oils and set throughout the home work just as well. try: orange, tangerine, lime, lemon, or neroli. my personal favorite, grapefruit, is like sunshine in a bottle.
resin oils (frankincense, myrrh, elemi) are heavier and are perfect for grounding, particularly during meditation or before bed. a drop or two on a tealight (before lighting), on your pillow, or dabbed on the temples and earlobes will do the trick.

some resources for essential oils:
mountainroseherbs.com
auracacia.com

for further reading:

***a word on essential oil safety: with a few noted exceptions, essential oils should not be put directly on the skin. oils should come in dark glass bottles and should be stored away from heat and light. do not consume essential oils.

savor simple pleasures

as i read more of the not so big life (rather than my social work stats books . . . oops), i am reminded of the to slow down, use time wisely, and relish in being. yes i know this. yes you know this. but sometimes applying it to our busy lives may feel far-fetched.

in an ongoing effort to encourage you and hold myself accountable to constantly savor simple pleasures, i wanted to share a few ways to do so:

eat with chopsticks to slow down
go on a technology fast for an evening or weekend
avoid checking your crackberry during dinners with friends
handwrite your thoughts
frame a favorite postcard
repot a plant
surround yourself with fresh flowers
collage your planner
wear a flower in your hair
restore in legs up the wall
don red lipstick
look through your planner and cancel some to-dos
carry a favorite book in your purse to read while waiting
snap photos to feature a day in the life of you
print a letter to your gramma using BIG font
start your day mindfully: tea, journal, meditate
light nag champa incense
respond to email in 48 hours, not 48 minutes (or seconds)
insert a tea bag into a snail mail note

what are your beloved simple pleasures?

snow bound

like many in the area i am stuck at home.  being trapped inside (with some brief excursions for snow angels and tramps through the snow) can be a good time for overdue tasks, cleaning out closets, blog writing, etc.  but it can also be a good time for reflection and slowing down.  a cute npr story that ran last week ends with the idea of a winter storm as a gift of time.  time to spend with your family and friends and yourself. i like this idea and invite you all to sip some tea (or hot chocolate) and enjoy the time.  if you can't make it to tranquil space class today roll out your yoga mat at home and do a practice of your own  (garudasana arms and gentle back bends can feel great on all those sore shoveling back and shoulder muscles!). maybe spend some time journaling or take a hot bath.  spend some extra time with kids or give a call to someone you haven't talked to for awhile.  what are your ideas for using the time mother nature has given us?

what brings you tranquility?

at a recent meeting with our fabulous front desk team, i asked everyone to bring a show and tell item that brings them tranquility. they brought journals, colored pencils, photographs, and even a guitar. it was touching to see the many ways in which we find our own tranquil space. my beloved item was a pink mug that i picked up at einstein bagels in 2005 that i take with me everywhere. it has a faded breast cancer logo on the side and oodles of dings.

while holed up at home during the blizzard with a random case of low, low energy (definitely not my norm), i took photos of a few items that surrounded me and brought tranquility: 4-legged friends, flowers, candles, warm fire, bows, colorful paint, pink knitting needles.

what brings *you* tranquility?

namaste,
kimberly

a funny thing happened...

... when we were about to retire the weather button: snowpocolypse 3.

tranquil space in new york!

winter is still here, but nothing makes me feel warmer than shopping! kimberly and i made a quick trip up to new york city for the first of our buying trips. what a great combo, new york and shopping!

we got to see our favorite vendors and some of their new products and also stocked up on your favorites. some of the new products include single serving sampler of tea forte's loose tea. a new scent of the soaps, lotions and bath salts and new body oils from the new and popular line lotus love beauty.

the lovely papaya company has a plethora of new merchandise, like fabulous oil cloth totes, post card tins, new card designs, dateless planners and more water bottles.

paddywax have introduced their garden crush line of candles. celebrate spring with scents inspired by flowers, including peony, sweet pea and geranium. the bright tins will bring color and light to any space.

now let's get to the exciting part, the new stuff! i'm so excited about all the new vendors and our customer's reaction.

last year at the show, kimberly and i were over the moon about bittersweet designs. kimberly just about died for their long necklaces. (they are so her)

their booth was just heavenly. the displays and merchandise totally fit the vibe in our boutique. we are so glad to bring some of their lovely items to you. the vintage adjustable rings are sure to be a hit, as well as their glittery hand made journals.

another new line is dogeared jewels and gifts. fab-u-lous! fashionable jewelry and great gifts are a mainstay for this adorable line.

we picked up a few of the necklaces that coincide with the chakras and single pearl necklaces are a cute addition to any girls accesories. dogeared was just featured on the today show.

scarves are all the rage. they make any outfit pop with color and keep the neck warm in a chilly environment. hold onto your winter scarves for now, but keep your eye open for the new arrivals that will get you noticed on the street or anywhere you may be. fun colors will accent jeans or an elegant dress.

keeping with the accesories, i can't wait to see the ribbon bracelets that we discovered in new york from new vendor love, me. the bracelet is made from colorful ribbon and have cute charms. how adorable does that sound? sorry i don't have a picture to share. trust me they are sooooo cute!

items will be coming in very soon and trickle in through mid march. i hope that my excitement spreads to all of you.

yoga and chocolate...

yoga and wine... yoga and dinner? food and yoga are two of my favorite things so i am certainly a fan of the movement to combine the experiences. you may have seen a recent article in nyt on the growing yoga and food phenomenon. the idea of combining luxury foods like chocolate and wine with yoga can seem radical, but when would be better to really enjoy a luxury than right after a yoga class? the article doesn't mention any yoga and food stops in dc, but tranquil space will be hosting angela gargano offering two yoga and wine workshops this march!

february muse: life off the mat + off the cushion

"creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun." - mary lou cook

happy, happy february. i hope 2010 is off to a fabulous start for you and that your january resolutions have now become habits. or at least a few of them. or maybe even one!

choosing a favorite topic to muse upon is always a tough decision. i'm blessed with multiple passions (one may say too many) and an ongoing desire to sprinkle inspiration. i write regularly on my blog, tranquility du jour, along with other talented guest bloggers so focusing for my month tranquil space muse is like reigning in a wild horse.

here goes, i've decided to narrow it down to my two focused passions for 2010: creativity and spirituality. creative expression fuels my spirit. i rewarded myself for the completion of the tranquilista manuscript by signing up for a creativity retreat. i played with acrylic paint, stamped goals, cut and tore images, and designed a visual journal. the experience was magical and it was insightful to see how yoga, of course, played a part.

my week was about svadyaya - self-study and reflection. this came up through pulling images that spoke to me (lots of gardening - looks like i'll be busily planting this spring), writing my intentions, and listing the varied to-dos i handle regularly. all this provided insight. i also practiced aparigraha - non-coveting. surrounded by an actress from hollywood, veteran painters, and a few newbies such as myself, i did my best to avoid comparing or wishing i had the talent others did. although i did proclaim loudly on the second day, "my journal doesn't look like emily's!" then i remembered my yoga and focused on uncovering my own style instead of comparing. that was santosha - contentment. i was able to find my way, gain inspiration from the veterans, and cultivate a way of working that resonated with my spirit. ahimsa - non-harmng, also reared its head as we were encouraged not to comment on other's work and to be mindful of what you say to yourself. your first work probably won't be worthing of publication or an art show, but at least you are trying. be gentle. finally, tapas - discipline - played in. i did my best to stay offline during the 10am - 9pm creative play time. i napped or recharged in the hammock during lunch, wrote in my journal about the process, and mingled with the other creative souls on this journey. staying offline 24/7 and staying present was a challenge and the practicing tapas defininitely worked.

these concepts are a sprinkling of the ten yamas and niyamas that make up the foundation of yoga. explore a few for yourself and note how beautifully the practice of yoga translates off the mat, even into your creative play. the bottom three photos are samples of my creations during the retreat. for a recap of my takeaways and fun ideas for your colorful expression, click here.

finally, i have spent a lot of time this past month basking in spirituality diving deeper into my study of mindfulness. the art of being fully present in the situation. the top photo is a shot i took while sitting in meditation. as i showed up each morning to a workshop on mindfulness yoga at kripalu, i pulled out my fuzzy pink socks to help keep my feet warm during the lecture and practice. this past weekend i was able to sit with sharon salzberg and mark epstein as part of catholic's social work program's offering of spirituality. i'm finding that i can't get enough of this topic.

how best to infuse mindfulness into your everyday? be fully present when interacting with a colleague. chew your food slowly. take three deep breaths before answering the phone. soak in the tub. sip your tea. read inspiring texts. tune into this podcast with mindfulness meditation teacher gina sager.

may this connection to creativity and mindfulness offer you a glimpse into tranquility on and off the yoga mat and meditation cushion. thank you for supporting our love of all things tranquil. namaste.

team player of the month - daria gasparini

this title is reserved for members of our team who embody the tranquil space values, excel in their role at the studio, and have a passion for their practice.

over the years, the people i’ve met and worked with as a tranquil space yogi and as a studio assistant in arlington have inspired me and given me the confidence to try new things. the most recent example of this was last month when i was privileged to attend tranquil space teacher training level i.

i was apprehensive about signing up, as my thoughts weren’t toward teaching and my practice would hardly be described as remarkable in any way. but since i started practicing yoga, i’ve mainly treated it as exercise. knowing that that this just brushes the surface, i thought participating in teacher training would introduce me to other – spiritual and mental – benefits.

despite my hesitations, it was a remarkable weekend full of new experiences and challenges. the teachers were generous in their (seemingly limitless) knowledge and patience and my “classmates” were a great group of wonderful, supportive yogis.

looking forward to the year ahead, i know it will be a time of change, with hard decisions, leaps of faith, and wonderful surprises. i hope to take the knowledge i learned at tranquil space teacher training – as well as the encouragement and motivation from teachers and classmates – to handle these transitions with mindfulness and joy.

yogi of the month - linette hwu

this title is reserved for yogis who have shown a strong dedication to their practice, are enthusiastic about their growth, and enjoy sharing it with others.

i was a lapsed yogi when i first came to tranquil space in the summer of 2004, but something about that first class with peg inspired me to recommit myself to yoga, and i'm so glad i did. since then, yoga has become a bigger and more important part of my life than it ever was, and i give tranquil space the lion's share of the credit for that. even more than the strength and flexibility that i build in my body with each passing day, i appreciate the ability that yoga has given me (an admitted type-a washingtonian) to be present and to let go (though i also admit that i have to remind myself every once in a while that yoga was created to make it possible for people to sit in meditation for longer). i so value and am grateful for the tranquil space community and its diversity, encouragement and experimentation, generosity, knowledge, spirit of fun, thoughtfulness, warm-heartedness -- i could go on forever! namaste.

bethesda team player of the month

anne thiel

whenever in the past i heard teachers thank their students and say that they are their greatest inspiration, i have thought, "yeah, right, whatever." but having picked up more classes in the past several months and often teaching as much in one week as i would have in one month in the past, i have to the realization that this is true.

there are days when i make my way to the studio and think i have nothing new to say, nothing inspiring to offer, nothing worthwhile to teach, the students i encounter prove me wrong. their inquisitiveness, their focus and receptivity, their questions, their constructive feedback and their gratitude is something i can engage with, can have a dialogue with and - lo and behold - all of a sudden there is a class, there is something to say, an inspiring realization to share, something interesting to teach.

so, thank you, dear ts bethesda students, you are my greatest inspiration!

although i attribute my personal journey into yoga to the the first classes i stepped into on my own as a teenager, i harbor fond memories of practicing vrksasana (tree pose) with my mom and sister in the famiily room of our old house when we were small kids. i can remember the three of us standing in the a small circle facing one another, balancing on one leg and holding our hands in anjali mudra in front of our hearts. although my family is now scattered across the united states, we all maintain our own personal ites to yoga. my brother is seattle goes on and off with a vigorous asana practice, my sister in michigan attends a regular practice with a group who follow a generally set asana flow every week set to a musical theme of the month with very little if any verbal cues from an instructor. my father has become a dedicated practioner in new york city wehre he attends multiple classes every week, and my mother practices sun salutations at home while listening to the podcasts of tara brach from the insight meditation community of washington, dc. despite these ties to a common practice - the individuals of my family each see their practice from a different perspective, and perhaps this is what is most appealing to me about yoga overall. for me, the practice of yoga is analogous to a prism; each time it is held by the light of an individual, the colors that shine out are unique. when held up to the eye of an individual practioner a different world of mysteries appears.

the physical asana practice of yoga is an essential part of my sense of overall well being.. this is particularly true during times when i find myself living in an urban environment away from the mountains or ocean. just as important to my sense of wellness are the yamas and niyamas. the moral guideposts of yoga that elegantly spell out the path of love and light of the yogi. what makes these practices so meaningfu to me is the way they blend into one another. for example, the practice of svadhyaya (self study) is a fundamental part of my personal journey. personal reflection, however without santosha (contentment), can lead to judgement and negativity. so it is necessary to practice santosha and svadhyaya together. practicing svadhyaya and learning from reflection without judgement is the gift i believe we can all give to ourselves. looking at our lives and setting goals while remainin content with the present moment is a practice that yoga enables.

friends, family, yogis and non-yogis. there are so many people that i am thankful for in my life. my practice of yoga gives me the prism through which to view it all and the tools to continue to grow and blossom.
