spring is on the horizon: essential oils for surviving the chill in the meantime

by the time the end of february rolls around (and particularly the kind of february we’ve had this year), it’s easy to get antsy in anticipation of spring, and just as easy to fall into a funk at the realization that a solid month or so of winter still lies ahead. a simple and effective way to gently nudge yourself through the next few weeks is to utilize essential oils, which, depending on the oils that are used and how, can both ground you and lift your spirits.
citrus oils are quite effective in combating winter blahs. try putting a few drops in the palm of your hand and running it through your hair, or using a diffuser throughout your home. if you don’t own an essential oil diffuser, a drop of oil on a light bulb, a few drops on the inside of an air filter, or a few cotton balls sprinkled with oils and set throughout the home work just as well. try: orange, tangerine, lime, lemon, or neroli. my personal favorite, grapefruit, is like sunshine in a bottle.
resin oils (frankincense, myrrh, elemi) are heavier and are perfect for grounding, particularly during meditation or before bed. a drop or two on a tealight (before lighting), on your pillow, or dabbed on the temples and earlobes will do the trick.

***a word on essential oil safety: with a few noted exceptions, essential oils should not be put directly on the skin. oils should come in dark glass bottles and should be stored away from heat and light. do not consume essential oils.
