teacher feature - danielle polen

A few weeks ago, I was seated on a rickety bench, in front of the Esperanto Cafe on MacDougal Street in New York City. The intersection of MacDougal and Bleecker Streets used to be one of my favorite NYC people-watching haunts. There were four slightly eccentric cafes to choose from—one on each of the four corners—and for the price of a cappuccino, one was guaranteed hours of entertainment, just watching the Greenwich Village crowd stumble by. The cafes are mostly gone now, having been replaced by lesser establishments, and the corner will never again be what it once was. But on this particular sweltering August afternoon, my boyfriend and I stumbled across the Esperanto Cafe, not far from my once-favorite corner, and went in for some AC and iced coffee. Duly refreshed, an hour or so later, we got up to leave when BF decided that he needed to use the facilities. So I sat outside on the aforementioned rickety bench to wait.

As I was sitting there, strategizing as to how I was going to make it appear to BF that we had just "happened to stumble across" the Strand bookstore (and its "18 miles of books!") on our trek back uptown, a very disheveled older gentleman, with rheumy red eyes and a pungent, post-Thunderbird-binge odor about him stopped in front of me and, swaying slightly from side to side, pronounced, "I'll bet you can’t guess who you remind me of." When I assured him that I couldn't, he giggled and hacked a bit before squawking (and pointing to my pigtails), "you know, Dorothy, from the Wizard of Oz …. Same hairdo!" Trying to avoid the cigarette smoke that he was now also blowing my way, I replied that his Dorothy comparison was pretty right on, since, like her, I too was just trying to get home (although not until after I dragged BF through the Strand and made a few more iced coffee pit-stops on the sweaty trek back uptown to the bus stop).

Holding onto the side of my bench for support, my new friend burped, and then clicked his heels together three times in an admirable display of continued verticality. "You just gotta do that," he mumbled, in rhythm to his back-and-forth swaying. And before I could do that, or anything else, he'd spryly bent over and planted a slobber-ridden kiss on my left bicep. Unfortunately, he'd chosen to do so the very moment that BF was emerging from the café, dukes up like a lucha libre wrestler, after having seen the bicep buss.

No match for my Mexican macho, the "Wizard of Oz" put his hands up as if to surrender (or ward off a gang of flying monkeys), and then meekly extended a hand, in an attempt to shake BF’s; the latter merely took my arm, and pulled me off the bench and up the street (unbeknownst to him, and happily for me, in the direction of the very bookstore I’d been angling to visit!). He also insisted I pull out my travel-sized bottle of hand sanitizer and swipe my bicep (as Auntie Em would say, "better safe than sorry...").

Later that night, wedged into the rear-most seat of the Bolt Bus headed back to Washington, I pondered my MacDougal Street Wizard and was reminded of a quote from the James Agee classic A Death in the Family: "How far we all come. How far we all come away from ourselves. You can never go home again." One interpretation of this quote might be that, once we grow up and have our own lives, we may physically return to our childhood home, but we can never really return to the same feelings that we experienced there because we’re different people. It’s never quite the same "home" that it once was. Indeed, this realization had hit home for me just weeks earlier, upon my return to El Paso, Texas for my 30th high school reunion.

And yet, in a deeper sense, we do have the ability to come home. Our practice of yoga, among many other things, assists us in developing the capacity to simply be attentive—to be here, now, in the words of Ram Dass. When we practice moving our body in a particular way to perform the postures, we’re not only developing our physical powers, we’re honing our mental energy, as well. We learn to focus, to distinguish sensations, to pay attention, to concentrate and, ultimately, to be fully present in the moment. As such, body-based practices such as yoga are a wonderful doorway in to the deeper development of insight, and when we develop insight into our true nature, we have, indeed, come home. As poet Mary Oliver writes, "To pay attention, this is our endless and proper work."

In sum, yoga deepens our capacity for awareness. And as my teacher John Schumacher notes, "[t]o be aware is to be awake, and to be awake in this way is to be alive in the fullest sense of the word. This is the goal of yoga."

****

Dorothy: "Oh, will you help me? Can you help me?"
Glinda, the Good Witch: "You don’t need to be helped any longer. You’ve always had the power to go back to Kansas."
Dorothy: "I have?"
Scarecrow: "Then why didn't you tell her before?"
Glinda: "Because she wouldn't have believed me. She had to learn it for herself..."

There’s no place like home.

the beginning of the fall season brings a flurry of change to the spa!

new therapists, new services, and self-care week greet us as we head into october!

self-care week is october 12-18. most services** in our spa will be offered for 25% off all week! we will begin taking appointments october 1st. please call for an appointment; discounts will not be available online.

**naturopathic services and colon hydrotherapy excluded

~the spa is excited to introduce several new therapies:

homeopathy:
homeopathy is an energy medicine which uses plant, mineral or animal substances in dilute amounts to stimulate the innate ability of the vital force (immune system) to heal iteslf. the law of similars, or the concept of “like cures like”, is the basic prinicple of homeopathy. each patient is analyzed regarding their unique nature, and the homeopathic remedy is selected based on the totality of the symptoms and sensations, not on the type of disease or diagnosis.

nutritional detoxification:
a detoxification diet gives you a break from chemicals such as pesticides, food additives, and heavy metals that are found in the common diet and air and bogs our systems down. our detox diet emphasizes foods that provide vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants that are needed for the body to rejuvenate and repair itself. after a detox, people often report improved energy, clearer skin, regular bowel movements, improved digestion, and increased concentration and clarity.

craniosacral therapy:
craniosacral therapy is a light touch energy treatment that works to free up energy tension patterns in the fascia layer – connective tissue that surrounds all of our organs and muscles. tension patterns can be caused by physical or emotional stress and can disrupt the flow of the natural craniosacral rhythm thereby blocking the body’s innate ability to heal itself. after a craniosacral session, patients feel more balanced and grounded.

colon hydrotherapy:
colon hydrotherapy is a gentle cleansing of the colon using filtered water to release buildup of fecal matter that has accumulated over the years. in addition, with the gentle filling of water and emptying of toxic debris, the muscles of the wall of the colon are strenthened which helps to prevent constipation. your colon is the window to your total body health. releasing things that “no longer serve you” is key to improving your overall health.

firstline therapy:
firstline therapy is a individualized therapeutic nutritional program. a quick and accurate measurement of your body composition is assessed using a bioimpedance analysis, which calculates your body fat in relation to lean body mass. based on these results, a personalized dietary plan, nutitional supplements and exercise plan are created to help you support your optimal health and well-being.

wellness consulting:
"if you could have done it by yourself, you would have done it by now"
- pat williams, wellness coach
a wellness consultant/coach collaborates with you to look at your big picture and assists in unlocking your potential. together you will set goals and a clear path to help you achieve what is important to you. they are your personal ally and supporter.

a wellness consultant/coach is there to help you discover a more fulfilled, balanced life both physically, emotionally, and mentally. a wellness consultant can be used for:

life balance
weight loss
body image
stress reduction/management
nutritional changes
quitting bad habits
fitness and exercise

wellness consultants/coaches are not doctors, therapists or psychologists. they are there to help you focus on the present moment and guide you along your future path.

team player of the month - lucy biederman

this title is reserved for members of our team who embody the tranquil space values, excel in their role at the studio, and have a passion for their practice.

to write a couple paragraphs about yoga feels in some ways like trying to write a couple paragraphs describing the world. yoga is a world; and so is tranquil space. i felt that from the first time i took a class at tranquil space arlington, two years ago.

of all the things i love about ts, what i love most must be the intensity of the classes, all that sweating and focusing and breathing and modifying and experimenting. as a grad student in poetry at george mason, i spend a lot of time brooding in my room; sometimes i'm in a really bad mood at the beginning of class. but i always feel different - fortified - by the end.

there’s a line i love by the poet cszelaw milosz, "the purpose of poetry is to remind us how difficult it is to remain just one person." i think, for me, that might be the purpose of yoga, too. it shows me again and again and again how available change is. it's about making space for myself to be all the people that i am. a year and a half ago, it seemed utterly impossible that i would ever do a headstand. i thought it was something i objectively couldn't do. but now i'm a person who can do a headstand.

about six months after i took my first tsa class, i became the pr person for tsa, putting up schedules and signs around clarendon and publicizing ts events. a few months later i became a studio assistant, too. i helped out at lunafest, a women's film festival benefiting tranquil space foundation, last spring and at the tsa two-year anniversary potluck a few weeks ago. i'm not usually one to volunteer so actively; it's just that it’s so fun to be part of this community. last weekend at clarendon day, even though it was raining and cold and things were ever so slightly disorganized, we were still laughing and talking and having fun under the tsa tent.

yogi of the month - jess redburn

this title is reserved for yogis who have shown a strong dedication to their practice, are enthusiastic about their growth, and enjoy sharing it with others.

i feel so honored to be chosen tranquil space's yogi of the month. i first came to ts about six weeks ago, completely new to yoga and unaware how profound it would be in such a short period of time. it only took one class to realize how rejuvenated i felt and that i had to come back for more. since that first class, ts has provided more than a sense of rejuvenation for me. beyond the physical capabilities i am beginning to experience, it has given me an ability to be more focused on the present, a greater sense of peace and a greater sense of happiness that i want to share with all those around me. it is so refreshing to enter a place where everyone is genuinely so friendly and you feel welcome. i am truly grateful to now be a part of the tranquil space community and plan to continue yoga as a lifelong practice.

karma yoga updates

with the temperatures falling, and the skies growing darker, an invitation to turn inward naturally transpires. personally i'm always energized by the sun, and seeing less and less of it tends to dampen my mood. one way i stay connected to light is through karma yoga. connecting to a body of light outside my own brightens not only my world, but many many worlds around it, some that i can't even see! as the air turns crisp, i invite you to stay warm by connecting to a greater spirit, that of service and giving your time.

on that note, i'd like to share with you that kevin and his karma yoga class raised a whopping $409 to benefit the whitman-walker clinic and the upcoming aids walk on october 3rd! thanks to all the yogis who came out to support a cause that not only touches the world, but hits especially close to home in dc, where the epidemic is still on the rise. missed the session but still interested in volunteering? visit: www.wwc.org.

this month, dibora hosts a karma yoga workshop for clowns without borders! this is a fantastic global organization that offers laughter to relieve the suffering of all, especially children, who live in areas of crisis ( including refugee camps, conflict zones and countries in states of emergency). the next mission is to columbia in november and all proceeds will go to funding this upcoming trip.

it's a special month, as dc has the honor of hosting his holiness the dalai lama. in addition to a number of receptions, he's hosting a public talk on saturday, october 10th, that many of us will be eagerly attending (it is sold out now).

if you weren't able to snag tickets for saturday's talks, there are a number of other events with tickets still available that are sure to be just as inspiring.

of note, a special reception, the light of truth awards, with a special address in person by the dalai lama. it is the most prestigious award in the tibet movement. this year, the late julia taft will be honored, a great humanitarian who was deeply committed to tibet. individual tickets are available here or by calling the harman box office at 202-547-1122 or toll free 877-487-8849.

as always, feel free to contact me with any/all ideas and thoughts surrounding karma yoga service!

yummy yin yoga: butterfly pose

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” ~ Maya Angelou

This yoga pose works wonders on stretching the lower back and is stimulates the kidney meridian of the body – considered critical to fluid energy flow. Meridians (based on Chinese medicine) are invisible pathways through which energy flows. During an acupuncture session, needles are inserted into meridians to open blocked energy and allow it to flow freely through meridians. Yin yoga has a similar effect sans needles! Each pose stimulates a certain meridian and stretches the connective tissue of the body – rather than muscle in a typical yoga class.

To begin, sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you. Bend your knees and bring the soles of your feet together. Move your feet forward so that they form a diamond shape. Your knees will resemble butterfly wings – hence the pose name. Bend forward from your hips and round your spine. Let your head rest into the soles of your feet or onto a blanket or pillow that you place between your head and feet. Take deep full breaths and stay here one to five minutes.

With yoga we want to avoid pain. Find that sweet spot of sensation located between stagnation and pain. In yoga – and life – it’s referred to as “finding your edge.” If you are feeling any discomfort beyond strong sensation, back out of the pose by adding another pillow or lessening the time you hold the pose.

Benefits: Stimulating the kidney meridian helps to balance bodily fluids in the blood and circulatory system, lymphatic system, endocrine system, and urinary system; helps regulate blood pressure; offers an emotional opening and releases fear.

Omwork (homework with a yogic twist): Try a yin yoga class on DVD or at Tranquil Space. Pay attention to your energy – do you feel depleted or energized? Sit it butterfly for a few minutes a day. Note how it feels and observe your progression. Yoga is a journey and yin yoga is a yummy, slow, quiet practice.

A Celebration of Yoga

September is National Yoga Month so it felt apropos to muse on the benefits and ways to embrace yoga – along with providing a brief how-to for the sensational sun salutation. Yoga translates to “union” and offers a way to live life with mindful flair. The physical poses and breath work associated with yoga in the West are catalysts, but not the end all be all of this ancient practice. Yoga is a way of being. My favorite mantra lokah samasta sukino bhavantu translates to “May all beings everywhere be happy and free. May the thoughts, words and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.” That is yoga!

You are always in motion – browsing a bookstore, sipping tea at a café, volunteering at a local shelter – and you can find balance by staying connected to your yoga practice off the yoga mat. For example, while waiting for a late subway train, instead of growing impatient, shift your weight onto your right leg and place your left foot on your right ankle to practice the tranquility-invoking tree pose or practice taking long, full breaths. You can find peace within the pandemonium by spontaneously practicing the principles of yoga (summarized in the mantra featured above) in your everyday.

Yoga can transform your life on so many levels. A few of the main benefits include: increased confidence; attention to the impact of situations, people, and food on your body; the chance to slow down and take a break from life while on the mat; meet a community of like-minded people; deep breathing to ground you in sticky situations; improved sleep patterns; a connection to your inner voice; toned body; relief from pain, headaches, and stress. Oh, and the list goes on and on and varies among yoginis. Needless to say, yoga can have profound effects on your joie de vivre!

To get started or return to your practice, I recommend at least a weekly practice to begin immersing your body and spirit into yoga. When you start to get more serious, a daily practice is ideal, even if only for a few minutes. I try to carve out time each day for at least a forward fold, especially when traveling or on deadline. You may find that your body begins to crave the practice and your muscles actually ache for it when you take a hiatus. Yoga is different from other forms of exercise because most femmes find they love to practice rather than adding another “should” to their already-packed life.

To get started or to deepen your personal practice, begin to explore sun salutations. This series is sure to bring pep to your step and awaken your spirit. I recommend at least five of these to start and end your day.
1. Ground yourself in mountain pose at the top of the mat. Bring your hands to prayer position in front of your heart.
2. Inhale, extend your arms up over your head.
3. Exhale, reach your arms out to the side as you fold forward.
4. Inhale, step back with your right leg to a lunge.
5. Exhale, step back with your left leg to down dog.
6. Inhale, float your body forward to plank pose.
7. Exhale, drop your knees, bend your arms, and lower into half-chaturanga.
8. Inhale, drop your belly, slide up to cobra.
9. Exhale, curl your toes under, lift your hips up to down dog.
10. Inhale, step forward with your right foot into a lunge.
11. Exhale, step your left foot in between both hands to a forward fold.
12. Inhale, extend your arms out to the sides and up. Exhale your hands to prayer in mountain pose.

Let this month provide the push you need to jumpstart your yoga practice. Whether it is the practice of poses, deep breaths, or embracing the mantra presented above, you ARE a yogi. Let yoga ooze from your spirit as easily as you draft a memo, nurture your family, walk your dog, or do anything that comes second nature. Yoga is about living in a way that contributes to others and if you achieve headstand along the way, so be it. Bask in being you – mindfully and authentically you. Namaste.

TranquiliT bamboo = green

don't be bamboozled. there has been a recent flood of controversy on whether or not bamboo fabric is truly eco-friendly. the main concern appears to be the processing of the bamboo as noted in this article by associated content and eco-yogini.

tanboocel bamboo fiber, which is our brand of bamboo fiber, is a regenerated cellulose fiber - made from the natural organic bamboo by a high tech process that is non-polluting to the environment during production. unlike the bamboo fabric made in other ways, TranquiliT's fabric is processed in a sealed container where 100% of the chemicals that are used are trapped and contained - not released into the factory, environment or atmosphere. in addition to the greener processing, the bamboo we use is certified as organic by the Organic Crops Improvement Association International (OCIA).

while i'm not claiming that bamboo is the perfect solution for saving the environment, i do believe it to be an AMAZING fabric. it has advantages over cotton and other fabrics, a drape compared to silk or cashmere, and feels simply luxurious.

green earth bamboo sheds more light on the controversy and notes that there is a lot to consider when exploring the environmental impact of a product. i'm a believer in the green value of the bamboo used to wrap you in TranquiliT.

sigg bottles had a large sales boom when it was discovered that nalgene water bottles were leaching bisphenol or BPA. many consumers switched from the popular plastic bottles to aluminum or stainless steel water bottles. aluminum bottles, unlike stainless steel, require a liner. you may have heard the latest news that the president of sigg has announced that liners of their reusable bottles made prior to august 2008 contain trace amounts of BPA. for full details, you can read his letter here. in the letter, he claims that none of the liners leached BPA and reminds users that the bottles were never labeled as BPA free.

to see if you have sigg's BPA free eco-care liner,
open your bottle and look inside. it will be very easy to see which liner you have.
the old liner has a shiny copper color and the new liner has a pale yellow coating. (see photo to the right or read the sigg bulletin)

sigg is offering an exchange program for any bottle that you may have purchased with the former liner. if you discover your sigg bottle has the old liner, you should return the bottle directly to sigg rather than the retailer. for instructions on how to return the bottles, review the link here.

tranquility boutique offers stainless steel bottles from both earthlust and the tranquil space klean kanteen. these beautiful bottles are made from food-grade stainless steel that don't require a liner (and have been BPA-free since day one). our goal is to bring all of our customers unique, safe and quality products. we were very disappointed to learn that older sigg bottles leached BPA, however we are satisfied that the remaining sigg bottles in stock at tranquility boutique have the new liner and are BPA-free.

How do geese know when to fly to the sun? Who tells them the seasons? How do we, humans know when it is time to move on? As with the migrant birds, so surely with us, there is a voice within if only we would listen to it, that tells us certainly when to go forth into the unknown. – Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

I was delighted to see leaves in shades of red and gold while doing yoga on a screened porch in the woods last weekend. A fresh season is upon us and I’m grateful for the cool breeze accompanying it. As summer comes to a close over the next few weeks, I encourage you to spend some time in svadhyaya (self-study). As nature changes around you, it prompts you to turn within and make your own changes.

Each fall I grab a hot cocoa topped with marshmallows, curl up with a comforter, and pull out the Wheel of Life exercise (see page 73 of hip tranquil chick), which you may have been exposed to during workshops, while working with a coach, or on any retreat with me. This exercise has you assess your level of satisfaction with areas such as health, home environment, education, finances, relationships, joy, creativity, self-care, career, and spirituality. Your level of satisfaction could easily change daily, depending on positive feedback at the office, a messy home, a breakup, or a lingering cold. By taking a look at these categories on a seasonal basis, you can establish action steps to move past stagnation. This also allows you to catch any brewing dissatisfaction that may be beneath the surface.

Yoga allows us the opportunity to move out of our head and into our bodies. Listen within. What beckons you? what is calling for change or exploration? Just as we explore our edge on the yoga mat by seeking that place of sensation beyond the comfort zone before pain, I encourage you to find your edge off the mat this fall. I’m joining you on this exploration by returning to graduate school to pursue a master’s in social work. What will be your new pursuit or surrender this season? Namaste.

farewell my summer love...

can you believe it's september? the summer sure has flown by. you can celebrate the start of the fall season with some retail therapy. mark your calendars for monday, september 14, as we introduce the new fall tranquilit line. the new colors and new pieces are sure to be a hit with fans of the eco line.

i know it's a bit early, but you should start making your lists for the holiday gift giving season. yes, you're still rocking shorts and flip-flops, but the holidays will be here sooner than you know it. many of the new items found on our latest buying trip to new york will be arriving this month. be sure to check them out. for a sneak peek check this previous blog post.

zico coconut water now comes in a larger liter size. this popular drink has been flying off the shelves since we introduced it months ago. now we offer it in an economical liter container so that you can keep the natural electrolytes flowing from the studio to your home.

we always like to hear from you, so please leave a comment or shoot an email at marq@tranquilspace.com.
