shine brightly this summer: live out loud

"Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun." — Mary Lou Cook

Looking for a change of pace or an activity to put spring in your step? Stepping outside thecomfort zone to explore new experiences can have a profound effect on elevating a mood and overall zest for life. Below are a few ways to live out loud and embrace your creative spark along the way:

Get artsy: I use "artsy" to cover a few mediums such as pottery, sculpting, drawing, watercolor, and painting. Picking up a book, taking a group class, or working one on one with a tutor offers you a chance to create in ways you may have never thought possible. There is something *incredibly* zen about working with clay, or taking your palette, easel, and canvas to the local park to capture summer flowers.

Get centered: In order to let creativity flow, it's helpful to set up a creative ritual. I like to light a candle, fire up nag champa incense, and have a cup of tea nearby. You may find setting an intention, meditating, or doing a few sun salutes to be particularly grounding.

Get inspired: Indulge in an artist date – a weekly one-hour solo excursion to indulge your creative side. I like to take this a step further with occasional solo nights, days, or even weeks. Think of your artist date as replenishing your creative well, nurturing your inner artist, and allowing yourself the chance to find inspiration. Visit a museum, browse a bookstore, meditate, go for a hike, explore the Arboretum or Botanical Gardens, savor jazz in the Sculpture Garden, try yin yoga, listen to live music at Wolf Trap.

Get your hands dirty: The act of planting something and watching it grow can be very rewarding. We, too, are little seedlings constantly growing, thanks to water, love, and light. Planting a few herbs in your apartment windowsill or an entire wildflower garden in your backyard can give you a little glimpse of Central Park in your ‘hood. This endeavor takes a few gardening tools, soil, seeds or seedlings, sunlight and a dash of know-how.

Omwork: Explore ways to add more color, glitter, belly laughs, yoga, and light into your everyday. Put your personal stamp on everything that you put out to the world. Namaste.

salabhasana (locust pose)

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

this week asana girl is reporting from the field, having returned to her childhood hometown of el paso, texas for her 30th high school reunion. she writes:

as if the vision of high school mates 30 years out weren't enough of a freak show in and of itself, upon stepping off the plane and into the blistering heat i quickly realized that el paso was once again under siege. and i'm not talking about the business-as-usual drug violence that spills back and forth across the border. no, this is worse. much worse. the locusts are back!

the locust swarms were one of the early horrors that i discovered upon my forced transplantation to west texas at the age of 10. like hordes of spring breakers descending upon cancun or daytona beach, these relentless little creatures seemed to include el paso in their travel plans once or twice a decade and, apart from devouring everything in sight (which is not much, in el paso), they also possessed a natural predisposition to dive-bombing one's hair, clothing, and personal space. each morning's walk across the desert mesa toward school felt like a reenactment of the plagues of egypt from cecil b. demille's the ten commandments (except there was no buff, bald, and beautiful yul brynner waiting in the wings).

so when i noticed the ground moving while dragging my luggage toward my rental car yesterday,my first reaction was, "100-degree heat, high school cliques that have endured into middle age, and locusts, too?"

it was only when i sat down later in the day to blog about july's asana of the month that i realized what a synchronistic event my return to el paso during the midst of a locust swarm was. indeed, locust pose was on the schedule for this month long before i planned this trip. "so is there perhaps a way," i mused, "to appreciate the beauty and power of the real live locusts in the same way i appreciate the beauty and power of locust pose? is it possible for me to stop and appreciate their place in the cycle of life, even as i brush them from my clothing, swat them away from my hair, and extricate them from my starbuck's double shot on ice?"

i decided to practice in the poolside garden and placed my travel mat in the one meager spot of available shade. and as i unwound and decompressed my spine from the effects of the long journey through the practice of gentle backbending, i allowed the sounds and movement of the locusts to become a part of the experience. inhaling and unfurling my body into locust pose, i imagined myself swimming powerfully through the air in the summer heat, accompanied by the whirring, clicking, buzzing song of the locust.

and while i can't say that i've completely stopped swatting away the occasional flying interloper, i think i may have finally made peace with our mutual coexistence.

here's to the sounds of summer. here's to the '70s. to farrah fawcett. michael jackson. and all creatures, great and small. even those locusts.

salabasana (locust pose):

benefits:
• strengthens the muscles of the spine, buttocks, and backs of the arms and legs
• stretches the shoulders, chest, belly, and thighs
• stimulates the abdominal organs
• improves posture
• helps relieve stress
• may have therapeutic applications for certain types of lower-back pain, indigestion, fatigue, and constipation

cautions/contraindications:
• serious back injury
• students with neck injuries should keep their head in a neutral position by looking down at the floor

preparatory poses:
• bhujangasana (cobra pose)
• setu bandha sarvangasana (bridge pose)
• virabhadrasana 1 (warrior 1)
• virasana (hero's pose)

song that most comes to mind while in the posture (with live locusts present):
in remembrance of and homage to the king of pop, michael jackson's 1982 classic: "beat it" (certified platinum in 1989).

p.s. for a distinctly different kind of homage, see:

team player - carol collins

this title is reserved for members of our team who embody the tranquil space values, excel in their role at the studio, and have a passion for their practice.

i saw some wonderful college friends and family this weekend in new york. i hadn't been "home" in over 2 years. they each asked me "are you still teaching yoga?" and i said "yes. i love it!" it's a genuine response. i don't have to make anything up or complain. i love it. i also appreciate the "extra" work i do on the side as teacher team leader - hiring and managing the teachers and teacher assistants as it's helped me develop new skills. i love helping with teacher training, mentoring teachers in-training, teaching workshops and i'm really looking forward to leading my second yoga retreat in september!!

much of the growth i seek in my professional life is what i want in my personal life as well. i think that's why i love what i do so much. i feel grateful that every day i'm moving and stretching!! almost every day i am learning about the movement of energy, anatomy, and the mind-body connection. my yoga (and yoga teaching) includes interest in psychotherapy, meditation, nutritional health, parenting and community building. i am on the path i was meant to be on and i'm going to keep on connecting and exploring within and reaching out. i'm going to keep turning my habits of blame, shame, anger and fear into embracing others and embracing my pain and my love. my yoga and therapy practice consistently - and sometimes annoyingly - remind me i am the sole navigator of this life's journey. tranquil space has been a great catalyst for my growth over the last 9 years. i love TS.

yogi of the month - shannon demko

this title is reserved for yogis who have shown a strong dedication to their practice, are enthusiastic about their growth, and enjoy sharing it with others.
i first started practicing yoga in 2002 by accident. i was taking a pilates class in my gym in philadelphia, and one night a new teacher arrived and announced that - surprise! - our pilates class was now a yoga class. ok, i thought, as long as i'm here...i don't want to be rude and leave, but i don't know. after one class, i was hooked. despite the fact that my muscles ached and my whole body shook in plank pose (not to mention chaturanga), yoga made me feel strong and calm at the same time. as the years passed and i found myself traveling often and moving my home several times, pursuing new challenges, encountering new struggles and finding new joys, yoga went with me. when in a new place that seemed strange and unfamiliar, i would just roll out my mat, and suddenly, i knew just where i was. after returning to dc in spring 2008, i was lucky enough to stumble upon a beautiful yoga studio right in my neighborhood. i didn't even have to roll out my mat before i knew i was at home at tranquil space. everyone at tranquil space truly loves being here. they smile, they share, they say please and thank you and they genuinely mean it. tranquil space is an urban oasis that provides a welcoming, nurturing environment for everyone from the newest to the most advanced yogi to explore their practice - with an ample supply of tea and cookies. what more could a yogi ask for?

teacher feature - anne thiel

"i have never understood what yoga is really all about," a friend of mine remarked to me recently. i was stunned, helplessly reaching for an answer. what to say? where to begin? how to explain that this practice which does not, should not and in all likelihood will not – even if we want it to – stop at the physical level, but will reach deeper layers of our beings, will affect our thoughts, emotions and – dare i say it – our spirit, our soul? how to explain that it is not about getting a good workout, not achieving the perfect posture, but about the practice, the discipline – discipline as in "training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character," but also as in "disciple," an "adherent of a school," i.e. somebody who is curious and eager to learn?

while i find myself scrambling for an answer, i remember others who have explained it better than i ever could.

in his book yoga: the spirit and practice of moving into stillness, erich schiffmann writes: "the purpose of yoga is to facilitate the profound inner relaxation that accompanies fearlessness. the release from fear is what finally precipitates the full flowering of love. in this state, you will love what you see in others, and others will love you for having been seen. … the apparently simple benefits that accrue from the regular practice of yoga can change your life in very profound ways… yoga will make you sensitive to the stillness, the presence, the hush, the peace of god. this deep inner stillness is at the core of your being. it is the ground, the joy of your being."

and my dear friend and fellow teacher danielle once summed it up very aptly in just a few words: "in yoga, we try to bring peace into our body, so we can find peace in our mind."

as you step onto your yoga mat this month, as you take your seat, reach your arms up high to the sky in your surya namaskar, i invite you to ponder this question "what is this really all about?"

exciting recognition of tranquil space as a lifestyle studio

i was delighted to be interviewed by the washington times recently on how tranquil space offers ways to indulge in yoga as a lifestyle. we are honored to have been serving washington for a decade now and thank you for the opportunity. if there is anything you need or would like to see us provide at tranquil space, please let us know.

yoga is so much more than a physical practice and can infuse every aspect of our lives. may we all continue to weave the teachings of lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu into everything we do! this mantra translates to: may all beings everywhere be happy and free. may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.

class schedules & traffic reports

introducing our new schedule page! this was a long time coming... we love our online reservation system, but it isn't the ideal way to check out the class schedule if all you want is a quick glace at the times and classes. the new tranquil space schedule page lists times and classes for all three studios (dupont, arlington & bethesda), along with easy to download PDFs so you can print them out for offline reference.

also new (thanks to the suggestion of one of our awesome team members) is a downloadable calendar file for the dupont schedule. it works for ical, the iphone, google calendars, and a whole lot more. if you can import an .ics file into your mobile device or calendar software, you've got the dupont schedule! we're all 21st century now!

another page you may want to check out is our dupont traffic report page. each class is coded green, yellow and red. greens are more lightly attended classes, reds are our most popular, and yellows are in between. if you prefer a little more elbow room, consider coming to one of the green classes. if you love the energy of a packed class, come in for a red class. it's also a good indication for the age-old question... "should I sign up for this class in advance?"

we'll be adding in all of the other studios soon... in the meantime, if you have ideas for other things we can do on the website, feel free to drop us a line or leave a comment in the comment box at any of the studios.

tranquil space tee photo contest!

those of you who go back with us a few years might remember the many locales our teachers, team and yogis have visited donning a tranquil space tee. from africa to belize to cambodia to dc... (that's a-d covered at least) tranquil space has been around the world, and then some!

we thought we'd breathe some new life into the tradition and make it even more fun by awarding a 6-class pass to the person who sends us the most interesting photo of them wearing a tranquil space tee or item from TranquiliT this summer. be creative with your locale (like kevin here, standing in the himalayas) or your pose (like michelle's fantastic 40th b-day headstand in the heart of san francsico).

submit your entries to contest@tranquilspace.com by august 31st at 11:59 pm ... the best photo as judged by the management team will get that 6-class pass, and we'll post a bunch of our favorites here on the blog and on the main site.

get to it shutterbugs!

race for the cure

i think i am addicted...to race for the cure. every year, i know what to expect, and every year my expectations are surpassed.

this year, our team, tranquil space yogis raised $729!!! the air was cool and crisp, perfect day for the race. we had a surprise visit from vp biden and his wife jill as well as a number of guest speakers.  the energy in the air was electric, and a few of us talked about how moved we were to see survivors and tributes to loved ones. and to top it all off, some of us caught the all female drumming group batala after the race, performing in front of the capital as the sun peeked out to kiss our faces. thanks to all who supported us in spirit, we hope you can join us next year as the quest to find a cure for breast cancer continues. our team consisted of: dibora amanuel,  norina chahla, tim mooney, kimberly wilson, pooja sharma, malini handa, sangeeta gupta, linday kramer, jeanette anderson, tim kanczuga, beatriz prieto-oramas, crystal rosario and me. together we can, and do, make a difference.

look for a great karma yoga event coming up at the end of the month to benefit lift me up!

summer solstice astrology

june 21, 2009
1:46 am edt

the summer solstice, also called the summer equinox, is when the sun is at its maximum power. traditionally, this is the day we celebrate the warmth, joy and laughter of the summer season.

the astrology for the 2009 summer solstice shows us this is a time to focus on intimate relationships. the venus-mars conjunction trining saturn inspires us to reignite passion as well as commitment in our love relationships. this relationship theme expands with the help of a moon-mercury conjunction, which creates the space for emotionally honest communication about what we value in life.

friendships and finding your spiritual tribe is part of this season as well with the jupiter-neptune-chiron conjunction in aquarius.

allow yourself to feel the strength of the sun-pluto opposition by asking yourself how you can fully own your power and bring the control issues of your life into balance.

be the change: live compassionately

"be the change you wish to see in the world." - gandhi

as yogis, we have a responsibility to embrace lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu and ensure our thoughts, words, and actions are having a positive impact. this can be done through simple gestures, mindful words, and generous actions. last night i held a team retreat for our divine front desk team and asked them to journal about how they live their practice of yoga off the mat. i encourage you, too, to take a moment to reflect on that question. it's a big one as yoga seaps into every part of our lives - diet, career, relationships, lifestyle.

one of the five tranquil space values is compassion. giving back is a key component of the yoga lifestyle. while musing on this concept a couple weeks ago, i came up with all sorts of ways express compassion to others, the environment, and yourself. some simple, some grandiose. here's a peek at my list:

smile
say "merci beaucoup"
snail mail a thank you note
plant a garden
don eco-fashion
buy local
give a seedling
plant a tree or grove as a gift
hold open a door for the person behind you
donate to a favorite charity each month
support animal rights
eat less meat, eat more veggies
write an old-fashioned snail mail letter
for every item you bring home, give something away
give gratitude each day
bake cookies
adopt a manatee
live your passion
do yoga
meditate
embrace feminism
take a deep breath before entering a room
adopt a pet
carry a reusable water bottle
surround yourself with fresh flowers
light a candle
sip fair trade tea
listen to inspiring music
go green
buy organic
pay attention
listen
stay informed
adopt a pug
volunteer
call your gramma
vote
share your voice
protest shark fin soup
write
change the world one purchase at a time
support local farmer's markets
do more yoga
write it out in your journal
buy local art
remember birthdays
give kudos publicly
support friends' dreams
throw a chariTea soiree
mentor
start a business
launch a non-profit
head a girls' group
adopt an orangutan (i adopted dodo - in the photo!)
give a compliment
support indie music

there are SO many ways to make a difference and i've only scratched the surface with a few of my favorites. please feel free to add your compassionate touches in the comments section. i'm on this journey with you and welcome feedback on how tranquil space can help make your life better. we're here to serve and my intention is to do it in a most compassionate way.

wishing you a beautiful start to summer filled with sparkling moments: iced tea topped with fresh mint, picnics, heart openers, down time, beach reading, yummy yin yoga, basking in the sun, walks in the park, belly laughs, deep breaths.

tranquilly yours,
